    Good value

Easy drinking and very fruity. Tastes more expensive than it is.

    Wonderful mistake

This was a new one for me and because it was from Catalunya I thought I'd give it a try, Well Calatayud is nearly an anagram of Catalunya isn't it? And it is brilliant a big full mouthful, a bit jammy with a touch of tannin. Lovely stuff a wine with a lot of balls. I'll be coming back for more.

    Perfect BBQ wine

This 70% Garnacha, 25% Syrah, 5% Mazuelo and Monastrell blend is a dark, inky blue colour and presents smoky aromas of grilled meats, game (hare) and blueberries. It's a chewy, jammy and perhaps surprisingly silky wine, with fine tannins and a freshness like mountain streams and wet rocks which is unusual given its power and hot, dry origin. It also displays secondary flavours of liquorice and chocolate, and a pleasant slate-like minerality, adding to its overall complexity. It's not as hot or tannic as one would expect from a Calatayud Garnacha-dominated wine. Possibly a touch unbalanced, with more sweetness than acidity, but it's well-made and very pleasurable - a perfect barbecue wine.

    Delicious

Delicious, great with Sunday roast or for dinner with friends. Actually, forget the friends and drink it yourself!

    Interesting (in a good way)

First impressions were mixed, not sure how it would develop. But after an hours breathing it really came alive with lots of spice and chocolate and sweet black-currants. Well worth the money, recommended.

Staff Reviews

  • A great Autumn wine, very moreish!

"This Garnacha dominated blend from Calatayud recently won a Bronze Award in the Decanter World Wine Awards and what a worthy winner it is. Deep purple in colour, it shows vibrant aromas of spiced blackberries, sweet cherries and a hint of chocolate. The succulent palate follows on from the nose with rich, brambly fruit, supple tannins and full body, providing a lovely mouth feel. Would be delicious with duck in a blackberry sauce."

Press Reviews

  • Ripe and jammy (2010 Vintage)

"The nose is ripe and jammy with the scent of black cherries and sweet spice, but the flavours are fresh and tangy with a subtle grip of tannin. (Tom Bruce-Gardyne, The Herald, 15th September 2012)"
