Origin
El Recio translates as 'the tough guy', and is a more serious, mature wine, made from the product of some of Toro's oldest vines, which are cultivated using advanced biodynamic techniques. 14 months in new French oak provide opulence and polish.
Taste
Intense and opaque, this wine is a mass of deep black fruit, chocolate, roasted coffee bean and vanilla pod aromas. Voluptuous and weighty, with a firm structure, held together by silky tannins.
Enjoy
A great steak wine, which longs to be paired with rare asado-style beef fillet or sirloin. Drink now or keep for 2-5 years.

Yummy wine - perfect with cold rare roast beef

Full bodied, smooth and very drinkable. The label is a talking point but simply adds to the really good wine inside the bottle. Will buy again - and excellent value with current offer.

Press Reviews

  • Medium-bodied with succulent ripe dark berries (2010 Vintage)

"The 2010 El Recio sports a more mature gentleman on the label: same cap, stare just as intense as El Picaro, but with a little smugness. The wine comes from 90- to 100-year-old vines that are treated biodynamically and is aged in used French oak barrels for 14 months. It has an attractive, understated bouquet of earthy dark berry fruits, briary and wild hedgerow that is natural and well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe dark berries, mulberry and a saline note that is very generous. It needs a little more delineation towards the mocha-tinged finish, although it has impressive volume and weight in the mouth. 89 points (Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate, April 2013)"

  • It's upfront enough to be a crowd pleader (2009 Vintage)

"One of a trio of wines from this producer with very distinctive faces on the labels, this one, named 'the rogue', is made from 100% Tinto de Toro off 90 year-old vines. It has a remarkably strong aroma of chorizo and paprika spice, while the fruit on the palate is more forthcoming with gobs of plum enveloped in robust tannins. It's upfront enough to be a crowd pleader... as long as they're fans of big reds. Rating: 88/100 (The Wine Gang, www.thewinegang.com, August 2012)"
