Grape

Castelao, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah or Shiraz

Origin
Terras do Sado is a region in Southern Portugal. In comparison to the Douro valley the climate here is warm and maritime, with temperatures moderated by the Atlantic ocean.
Taste
Rich and full-bodied, showing ripe blackcurrant and blackberry fruits on the nose, and a hint of spiciness on the palate.
Enjoy
Makes an excellent partner to hearty meat casseroles or spicy sausage dishes.

Pity Majestic buyers mostly ignore Portugal. Only 6 reds, most from the Douro. There are some great grapes, excellent terroirs and good modern wine-makers. This wine has rich fleshy fruit with aromas of black cherries , dates and spice. The tannins are fresh and supple. Perfect with 'Med' flavoured food. Will buy again.

    Good Value

I bought this after reading a positive review in the press and I have to agree with everyone else who has enjoyed it here. This is well worth a try at the discounted price the tasting notes are spot on.

    consistent performer

A consistent performer, and good value. Have ordered this wine a few times over the last couple of years now, and the quality is always the same. Unlike beef burgers these days, you at least know what you're going to get.

    FANTASTIC VALUE FULL OF FLAVOUR

At the offer price this is a must; full of black fruit flavours it is surprisingly rounded. Robust enough to accompany most dishes but not in any way overpowering.

    Great value

Naff label or not, I really enjoyed this wine. On opening a strong earthiness which I could imagine going well with Liver & Bacon (will try next time) but once breathed for a couple of hours it was as enjoyable as many a wine several pounds dearer

Press Reviews

  • Satisfying and fresh (2010 Vintage)

"From vineyards close to Lisbon, this appealing, lighter-styled red shows sweet, direct berry fruits with a nice fruity purity. Satisfying and fresh, it’s very drinkable either on its own or with a wide range of foods. (Jamie Goode, Sunday Express – 100 Best Red Wines under £10, 17th March 2013)"

  • Fruity, vibrant fun (2010 Vintage)

"Delivering fruity, vibrant fun with a whisker of spice. It has enough structure to pair with your Easter feast or the cheeseboard after lunch. (Olly Smith, Mail on Sunday, 17th March 2013)"

  • Good authenticity (2010 Vintage)

"A textbook easy-drinking and bright Portuguese red that has black fruit, spice and liquorice aplenty. It's immediate and upfront in its juiciness with lashings of blackcurrant and then a touch of creaminess on the finish and even a soy-sauce salty character. Good authenticity and flavour for the price. (The Wine Gang, www.thewinegang.com November 2012)"

  • An amazing bargain of a rustic red (2009 Vintage)

"An amazing bargain of a rustic red, this one. It’s a blend of castelão, the beautifully scented alicante bouschet and syrah. It tastes big and bright, all red and black fruit underpinned with liquorice and rough, rustling, tree bark cut with flashes of acidity (Victoria Moore, The Telegraph, 5th May 2012)"
