Origin
João Portugal Ramos started planting his own vines in Alentejo in 1990, gradually increasing the vineyard area and developing the winery. Traditional foot-treading in marble lagares is still practised on the estate, alongside modern temperature-controlled fermentation.
Taste
A robust ruby red wine, with dense aromas of red berries and pudding spice. Flavours on the palate are bright, thick and jammy, with fine-grained, well integrated tannins and good length.
Enjoy
Enjoy with a roasted pork loin marinated in Mediterranean spices.

Staff Reviews

  • Portuguese Fruit Bomb

"I was really exited to try this wine after much excitement around work and it didn't disappoint. Brambly blackberry and redcurrant on the nose this wine has nice refreshing acidity and smooth tannins. Crammed with fruit this wine is very well balanced for this price point and punches well above its weight!"

  • Portuguese Beauty

"A real beauty. Rich jammy fruit, compelling aromas, subtle tannins and warming body. If you haven't tucked into Portuguese wine before then this is a good opener."

Press Reviews

  • Ripe, liqueurlike cherry and berry fruit (2011 Vintage)

"Blending syrah, trincadeira and aragonez grapes, this tasty red shows ripe, liqueurlike cherry and berry fruit. It’s open and seductive with just the faintest hint of green leafiness. (Jamie Goode, Sunday Express – 100 Best Red Wines under £10, 17th March 2013)"

  • Remarkably good value (2011 Vintage)

"A fine example of modern Portuguese wine-making, but using their traditional grapes Trincadeira and Aragonez (mixed with a little Syrah) from an estate which still practises foot-treading. Deeply concentrated flavours of red fruits, some touches of leather and tar on the nose, good tannins and a long satisfying finish. Remarkably good value to accompany any Mediterranean foods, but particularly paella. (Terry Kirby, The Independent, 3rd March 2013)"

  • has some guts and tastes fresh (2010 Vintage)

"This is just the sort of red I want to find from Portugal: unusual enough to give something you can’t find elsewhere, safe enough to be easy drinking and good value. It’s a blend of trincadeira, aragonez and syrah from the southern half of the country that smells slightly floral, like peonies, but also has some guts and tastes fresh. Good for cold evenings. (Victoria Moore, TELEGRAPH, 11th February 2012)"
