The wines vary from full more tropical fruit flavoured styles to the more intensely herbaceous, gooseberry wines sometimes with a touch of minerality. One thing they have in common is penetrating fruit and a zesty, mouth-watering acidity.
Although Sauvignon is more famously associated with the area, Chardonnay is grown in similar quantities, and can produce some wonderful expressions of the grape. However a lot of it is blended with Pinot Noir to make sparkling wine which is showing promise. Lindauer and Cloudy Bay in particular are well worth trying.
