Grape

Pinot Noir

Origin
Sourced from several vineyards in Marlborough's Southern Valleys, whose clay soils promote the growth of small bunches of small berries, and thus intensely flavoured Pinot Noir. Portions of the wine are aged in French oak barriques before blending with unoaked wine.
Taste
Rich garnet core with a purplish rim. Aromas of ripe black cherries and currants, with a lifted raspberry note and a hint of vanilla. Fine tannins, medium palate weight, and good fruit concentration.
Enjoy
Can be cellared for up to 5 years. Enjoy with cutlets of smoked lamb.

    Very disapapointing from St Clair

I am usually a fan of St Clair - especially their Block Savignon Blancs, and the Doctors' Creek Block 14 Pinot. This wine, however, is a terrible let down. Thin and reedy, completely lacking in body, fruit, length etc. At this price point, drinkers should expect a very high standard of wine making and value, and this unfortunately lacks either. Very disappointing effort from St Clair - avoid even with the special offer - there are many better value wines available.

Staff Reviews

  • Saint Clair do it again!

"This eagerly anticipated Pinot Noir from the perennial staff favourite producer of Saint Clair really didin't disappoint when I got the chance to open it recently. Hints of smoke and fresh herb on the the nose. The palate is much more fruit driven and has hints of cherry, raspberry and vanilla. Medium bodied with an enticing length and mouthwatering acidity. A great food match to that Chinese classic of Crispy Duck!"

Press Reviews

  • Like spring in a glass (2011 Vintage)

"This is pinot noir in the classic style – a light, elegant red. Quite pale in colour, it has a nice sour-cherry edge to the sweet fruit, but the flavour is bright and it’s like spring in a glass. (Jamie Goode, Sunday Express, 3rd March 2013)"

  • Concentration and extraction of power (2011 Vintage)

"Mind-blowingly dense with a tinned red fruit intensity. Although the fruit is full-on with notes of coffee, chocolate, raspberries and cloves, an element of this wine seems a little overworked, such is the concentration and extraction of power. Rating: 88/100 (The Wine Gang, www.thewinegang.com November 2012)"
