Origin
This wine is made by blending grapes of selected vineyards in the Awatere and Wairau Valleys of Marlborough. The vineyards are managed to the highest standard to ensure quality.
Taste
It is medium bodied with beautifully poised red fruit and very well integrated oak flavours. The crisp acidity and fine grained tannins provide a delightfully clean long finish of considerable finesse.

Showing a soft balance after 24 hours

Drank this over 2 nights (among other things!) and it was as good if not better second day. First taste, it's grippy and was probably too cold (seems to affect the body), but the taste was fine. Second night was lovely: more voluptuous red fruit and smoother tannins. That's when it really felt like good value, altho in general NZ Pinots are nobody's bargain these days!

    Nothing like I expected

I am a great fan of Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc, in fact I think it is the best in the price range. I wanted to try Pinot Noir having had some great stuff from another supplier. I was persuaded to try this and I am really pleased I only bought 2 bottles! I thought it was over rated and overpriced.

Now's the time to get it.

Always happy to buy VM. Here we are, end of Jan '11 and it's evidently developed nicely. (I'd have guessed that '09 and '10 would be too soon.) 4.5

    Not althgether ingratiating.

I agree with Peter Parker's comment that it certainly needs time to develop, but I disagree with the other Parker - I thought there was too much tannin and not enough fruit. The tannin could mean it needs keeping, but the lack of fruit suggests otherwise. Not a bargain either, even compared with Burgundy in the same price range.

    No relation...

I agree with my namesake. Too much sweet fruit and oak, with the acidity out of balance. As seems to be the case with too many NZ pinots, too much winemaking, not enough fruit quality.
