Grape

Syrah or Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre

Origin
The Assemat family have been running this domaine since 1961, when they replanted 250 vine parcels, surrounded by woodland and 'garrigue', or heathland. Known for its abundance of wild herbs, the landscape has its own unique aromas that carry on the breeze.
Taste
Made entirely without oak, this wine is vibrant and youthful in both colour and aroma, with great freshness to the dense red fruit. Ample tannins provide a long, blackcurrant and liquorice-tinged finish.
Enjoy
Best enjoyed in its youth or with 3-5 years' cellaring at most.

    Fabulous southern Rhone

Fabulously good - and shockingly good value - Lirac that drinks beautifully with goose, but is also hugely enjoyable by itself. Full to the brim with warm, juicy, intense red fruits, there's a touch of darker spiciness that adds structure, and a beautifully balanced green leaves/liquorice combination on the finish. A big, round and completely satisfying Lirac for the price of a bog-standard (and so often under par) Cotes du Rhone - I'll be getting a lot more of this!

    Uninspiring

I'm always looking for good non-oaked wines. Sadly this was disappointing - sweetish, all front-end and nowt behind it, it lacked complexity. Even at the offer price I expect a bit more interest.

Press Reviews

  • This is juicy, fresh and vibrant (2011 Vintage)

"This is juicy, fresh and vibrant with sweet cherry and plum fruit plus complex hints of meat and herbs. It has good potential for short-term ageing, so you could buy a case and lay a few down. (Jamie Goode, Sunday Express- 100 Best Red Wines under £10, 17th March 2013)"

  • Excellent, quite complex (2011)

"This is an excellent, quite complex blend (with more syrah than grenache and no oak). The result is a soft, warm wine with touches of plum and raspberry fruit and a figgy finish that also combines with sweetish spices. (Brian Elliott, Scotland on Sunday, 3rd March 2013)"

  • Robust and spicy without being overpowering (2011 Vintage)

"The hearty flavours and textures of this week’s dish call for a red wine that is robust and spicy without being overpowering. This delicious, refreshing blend from the southern reaches of the Rhone strikes the balance perfectly. (Giles Kime, The Telegraph, 14th October 2012)"

  • A great punchy, unoaked red (2011 Vintage)

"This is a great punchy, unoaked red for the summer. A typical regional blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, it has a lovely upfront and honest spice alongside the baked tomato and herbal flavours. Its juiciness is its joy and although it's unoaked there's plenty of tannin to give the wine a robust structure, thankfully without being rustic or hard. Rating: 89/100 (The Wine Gang, www.thewinegang.com, August 2012)"
