Grape

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

Origin
The Côtes du Marmandais are situated only 70km south of Bordeaux but classified as a South-West appellation. The wines are usually a blend of the classic Bordeaux varities but also include small percentages of local grapes such as Abouriou, as this one does.
Taste
Lots of ripe, brambly fruit with spicy notes and a firm yet balanced finish. Tannins are fairly robust but not bitter and length is fairly long.
Enjoy
Drink with lean but rich dark meat or goat's cheese, this wine will reward drinkers over the next 5 years.

    Disappointed

Nothing good to report. Not a pleasant taste but just about drinkable.

    Great everyday wine

Had a bottle last night and thought this was a superb wine for the price , it had enough tannin to do justice to a good spaghetti bolognese with a decent length of finish. Had another glass after the meal and enjoyed it just as much as it has a slightly soft character . Will be buying lots more , thankyou Majestic : )

Staff Reviews

  • A great Bordeaux style red wine - without the Bordeaux price!!

"If you have overspent buying your Sunday joint and need a bottle of Bordeaux red but not the budget for one, then consider this as it is made with the grapes used to make Bordeaux plus a couple of local varieties, and has the depth and taste to compliment roast beef, pork and will even compliment roast game, boar, pheasant and venison in particular. Give it a go and you may be surprised by the result!"

  • "From the Côtes du Marmandais this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec with the local Abouriou grape. It is quite gamey and earthy, with an animal quality to its red fruits. Savoury and lean on the palate, with juicy spice and a food-friendly appeal, this is rustic and a bit old-fashioned, and needs grilled lamb to do it justice. Score: 85/100 "
