Grenache, Syrah or Shiraz

Origin
The vineyards of Domaine Sainte Rose cover a total of 48 hectares, with planted vineyards amounting to 33 hectares. They spread from the clay/limestone soils found along the banks of the River Thongue up onto the gravelly schist soils of the plateau.
Taste
Flavours of the Garrigue such as aromatic thyme with jammy, red fruit and spicy, black pepper, make this a wine of enormous character. It is warm and complex on the nose, rich and ripe on the palate.
Enjoy
Superb structure and length allows cellaring for another couple of years but enjoy now with pepper steak.

    Delicious

One of my favourites. Plenty of fruit and herbs. Ideal with roast lamb or on its own. Ignore the critical review posted here - it's nonsense.

    dreadful!

I see this wine has had a decent run in the press but I must be missing something. I found it had a horrid nose of mouldy ammonia-like smell. The pallet was very ragged - virtually no fruit other than a faint trace of stewed prune. Awful value for money compare dto something like Cuve des Armandieres (same blend).

Summaries like "dreadful!" are hardly condusive to civilised debate. Let's remember we're sharing opinions about wine, not having a political slanging match. But neither is it helpful to dismiss opinions you don't agree with as "nonsense". My own note (admittedly made some time ago, so the wine isn't fresh in my mind) says that I found this offering more authentic (to the region) than the same winemakers' Derniers Cepages (also available from Majestic). However, while not noticing any ammonia on the nose, I did note a very slight undertaste taste that I could only describe as oily. I also considered its pricing a wee bit hopeful, something I have wondered about before in wines made in France by British expats. But go ahead and disagree...

I keep coming back to this

This a reliable very good wine. I might not drink it for a special occasion but I do keep coming back to it and recently bought another box of 6 bottles. There is always some of this in my wine rack.

    Excellent for taste and value

I like Reds and this is one of the best at this price range. Great with food, especially meats but also on it 's own. A good start to the weekend. The best Red I've tried in 3 years means I keep going back to it when not wanting to take a risk. A winner for me.

    I agree

Ignore the poor review. This is great value and an absolute steal, even without the offer.

  • "Charles and Ruth Simpson left Blighty to make wine at their Languedoc estate and almost every one has been a winner. This Garrigue, named after the pine and herb-scented scrub of southern France, is made from the estate’s mostly 50-year-old syrah and grenache grapes. Enjoy this gorgeous, hefty, peppery, garrigue-scented wine with barbecued red meats."

  • "…strong, spicy, chocolate and pepper-scented"
