Grape

Carmenère

Origin
Colchagua is the Southern Rapel sub-valley. It borders Cachapoal to the north and is irrigated by the Tinguiririca River. The climate is temperate all year round and the enhanced marine influence acts as a moderating factor.
Taste
Aromas of blackcurrant, plum, sandalwood and chocolate mark this out as classic Carmenère, and the palate echoes this with ripe fruit and a toasty vanilla character.
Enjoy
Beautifully approachable over the next few years and a match to cold cuts, burritos or blue cheese.

    Proven Winner

I think this wine is tremendous value and have enjoyed it on several occasions from Majestic, along with some of their other Carmenere’s (what a great grape!). I usually visit the shop in person, so I was surprised to see what a low score it has here. Wine is a natural product and has its highs and lows as it matures but I have always found this to be a delicious big spicy heavyweight wine – a winner with casseroles in winter and bbq food in summer.

    Different wine!

I tasted this wine in-store and thought it worth buying a few cases at its current low price of £4.99. I was alarmed by the reviews below, and just now opened a bottle to check. I think I must have a different batch entirely... Carmenere is a fairly big and rather tannic grape and I can well imagine many modern palates disliking it for that reason, but some of the comments below are quite specific, about 'off' scents, fruitless flavours and acidic aftertastes. The glass in front of me has very little perfume (Carmenere is not famous for it) but vanilla and dark plum is there, warm and spicy. The flavours, though, are big: damson and blueberry with plenty of the dark chocolate undertow and the tannic grip that makes it such a success with steak.

    Dreadful

Should have read the reviews before purchasing, glad it was only 2 bottles. Absolutely awful.

    Very disappointing

Unlike the previous reviewer I do consider myself something of a connoisseur of wine having taken an exam and made it a hobby for well over 20 years. The two bottles of this wine that I opened were thoroughly unpleasant and undrinkable, and smelt "off" with overtones of old leather. There was no fruit on the palate and an acidic aftertaste so the previous reviewer has been quite accurate. The problem is, he was not tasting the wine as it is supposed to be. Chilean wines are normally 100% reliable and I will continue to order them but I would steer well clear of this one. As it has a metal cap it has not become "corked" but something has gone wrong in the manufacture. I recognise the unpleasant taste from other "off" wines I have previously tasted. Happily they are only a tiny proportion of the hundreds of bottles purchased

    Disappointing

I am no great connoisseur of wine, but I do enjoy it and I do drink a fair amount of it. I prefer New World wines over French wines because they appear fruitier and more varied in taste. They are also generally less risky than French wines which I find often more unpalatable, possibly because of the effects of tannins. That said I may be missing a connoisseurs appreciation of this wine so this opinion is aimed at the more “regular” wine drinker..... you know who you are... ! This wine is bitter tasting, gives the impression of stripping off the top layer of your gut and then apparently targets the painful hangover parts of your brain after a few gulps, rather than a few bottles. Very disappointing for a wine both from Majestic and from Chile.
