The Barossa Valley has some of the oldest vines in the world and is home to Yalumba, founded in 1849. Yalumba has had considerable success with the rare and aromatic Viognier grape.
Taste
This is a full-bodied dry white, with a gorgeously perfumed floral scent and a ripe, peach and apricot fruit, with a silky palate-feel.
Enjoy
Enjoy with a light pasta flavoured with herbs, seared swordfish or tuna.

    Disappointing Viognier

I have learned that it always best to taste a wine before buying online. As a great fan of Viognier (and Majestic) I bought Yalumba Y Series Viogner for Christmas – without trying it. Big mistake. This Viognier is a disappointing and dull wine, and none of my family (all Viognier fans) liked it. I'm struggling to give ot even 2 stars for this price. That doesn't mean that others won't love it, but please 'try before you buy'.

    Great wine for the price

Wonderful fruity wine with summer written all over it. I bought a bottle from a well known supermarket at £9 and then searched it out on the Majestic site and found it at £7.59 ! Very good viognier at that price.

    excellent wine for the price

The potent Viognier grape can easily be overripe and overly extracted, producing wines with eye watering alcohol levels, and flavours that are flabby, out of balance or bitter. However, this excellent value example from a very relaible producer, (this review is for the 2011 with 13.5% alc) is really well balanced, with aromatic floral, apricot and peach notes, a fullish body, but also good acidity and freshness, and above all, great balance. Some lees ageing also gives a lovely yeasty, nutty richness to the finish. Hard to find better for the price.

    A refreshing change

We didn't understand the lower reviews. A great tasting wine, refreshingly different. Can't imagine getting better for the price.

    Yal Y Vio

Almost agree with previous review BUT, i think in its own right its not a bad little number its a light viognier (not alc wise as its 14.5) but its not as heady and spicy as other viogniers. You have to search a little as its not a pronounced wine, but nevertheless might suit those who have never tried viognier but are keen on say sancerres or chablis....give it a go...for that price cant lose! after all the beauty of wine is the searching for one you really like and this might be it!

Staff Reviews

    • Neil Owens
    • Assistant Manager, Majestic Stratford-Upon-Avon

"A staple in the Majestic range, the Y Series continues set the standard for sub-£10 Viogniers. Fermented completely in stainless steel to preserve the grape's characteristic stone fruit aromas, both the nose and palate display a delightful combination of peach and cooked apricot with just a hint of white flowers. One of few wines that can cope with a King Prawn and Coconut curry."

Press Reviews

  • Sumptuous example has all the heady aromatics and luscious fruit quality (2010 Vintage)

"Yalumba has made a speciality of Viognier and this sumptuous example has all the heady aromatics and luscious fruit quality that makes this tricky variety such a treat in the right hands. Waves of apricot, honeysuckle and a touch of pineapple combine in a full-bodied but not mawkish package that's a treat with pork in a sticky Chinese marinade. Rating: 90/100 (The Wine Gang, www.thewinegang.com, July 2012)"

  • A weighty aromatic white (2010 Vintage)

"A weighty aromatic white such as this delicious Australian Viognier is just the ticket (Giles Kime, The Telegraph, 13th May 2012)"
