Origin
There is a long history of winemaking in the Benegas family. It was the current winemaker's great grandfather who bought the first French vines to Argentina. From the high-quality Libertad Vineyards, fruit is picked at careful intervals according to ripeness levels.
Taste
This wine balances the powerful style typical of Mendoza Malbec with the finesse of a European wine. Lots of dark cherry, blackberry and oaky spice, with a long and pure finish.
Enjoy
The complexity, purity and power of this wine deserve a special dish, so drink with fillet steak with pepper sauce, or beef Wellington.

    Open it ... then wait.

This is a beast of a wine that knocked my socks off on first tasting. 3 days in a decanter and the fruit really came out and gave me a big cherry kiss on the lips. Open the bugger well in advance!

    Excellent with food

It is not a Malbec to drink without a serious piece of beef or lamb. Full body, rich, concentration, well balanced oak. I think it is a Malbec version closer to a Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah, than to a Merlot/Petit Verdot.

    Serious Malbec

I bought this Benegas Malbec after I enjoyed Don Tiburcio Benegas. Best Malbec below 20 pounds. Complex, long and elegant.

    Extremely pleasing

Full bodied, delicious flavour (not sure how to describe it in wine speak!), I would buy more if it weren't for the price. Very enjoyable

    made to impress, not drink

Big brambly nose, very dense, huge (too much) oak. Certainly grippy, very young, I challenge anyone to enjoy more than one glass. Unbalanced.

Staff Reviews

  • "Wow! This is truly serious stuff. Leaping straight from the glass are clear and bright cassis aromas with a dusky, brambly, summer-fruit-pudding backdrop. The palate is velvety smooth and caresses with a sweet kick of blackberry and strawberry fruit, swiftly evolving into bottomless blackcurrant balanced by a savoury coffee note that lingers on and on and on. The tannins are integrated and so well masked by the almost viscous, fruity palate that you hardly notice them. While other Malbecs can batter your palate into a pleasurable submission, this simply hums and vibrates with intensity and power - perfect with a fresh, juicy char-grilled steak from the barbecue. Outstanding!"
