Syrah or Shiraz, Carignan, Grenache

Origin
With old-vine Grenache up to 50 years in age supplemented with Syrah and Grenache, this complex red from the great value St-Chinian Appellation is a cracking wine for the money. Around 20% of the wine is matured in oak for one year.
Taste
This wine has a wonderfully expressive nose ranging from black cherry and prune through to nutmeg and mocha. The palate displays freshness with persistent dark berry flavours and an earthy spiciness.

A great match for shish kebabs or minted lamb.

Decent fruit and flavour with a definite hint of authentic 'terroir' character. Enough tannin to do justice to a rich beef dish. Overpriced at £8.99 but good enough at the special price of £5.99.

Ok, though would not buy again

I found the wine to be a bit then, weedy. Given these three grapes and the southern France location you would expect a more robust sun-kissed flavour. It is not bad but I could not recommend. I have another bottle which I will try with food and see if that suits it better.

    Delicious

You know when you have a punt on a bottle and hope it's going to please... well, this is a winner. So drinkable I wish I had another bottle for tonight. Bargain price too.

Staff Reviews

  • "An excellent value red from the Appellation of the same name in the Languedoc. The Syrah contributes some spicy notes whilst the Carignan and Grenache add complex aromas of dark fruits, coffee and sweet spice combine this with a smooth finish and you've got a great wine for the longer nights ahead."

Press Reviews

  • "An excellent follow up to the award-winning 2007, this blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan is gamey, meaty and spicy, with flavours of raspberry, white pepper and wild herbs. 90 points"
