Origin
The Clos de Danzay vineyard is acknowledged as being one of the finest and most well-established plots in Chinon, with both young vines and others aged over 100 years. Pierrre Jacques Druet's wine is matured for 18-24 months in barrel.
Taste
Superb quality mature Chinon. This wine has heady aromas of blueberry, vanilla and tobacco leaf, a dense core of blackberry and black cherry fruit, and ripe, fine textured tannins.
Enjoy
A fine partner for pheasant or guineafowl, rich pâtés or strong, savoury cheeses.

    Faded or needs decanting?

I found this wine old, faded, foxy and short on fruit. But as I hit the last glass the tannins and the fruit kicked. Maybe needs a hour in the decanter? Preferred the 03 Druet Bourgueil that was fresher but that has been and gone.

    Excellent value

Really enjoyed this wine for its smoothness and subtlety. Fantastic value for a high-quality aged wine. Full marks at this price.

    Think outside the Bordeaux box

I have been mightily impressed by the qualtiy of some of the mature Loire reds offered by Majestic, and this is another example. 11 years of ageing and some immensely deep flavour, smooth and almost medicinally smooth. It is delightful to drink and worth trying if you are a fan of clarets, probably providing more value for money than clarets these days. Cabernet Franc comes up trumps.

    Past it

I opened this wine looking forward to some sumptuous maturity and was really disappointed. It still has some good tannin and acidity (though that includes the acetic variety), but the fruit has very largely gone.

    Fantastic

I'd agree with everything JBR posted. Great value for money - smooth, a little smokey, drinking perfectly well after over a decade maturing. Really enjoying this one, go for it.

  • Bargain but hurry!

"This wine is a great find. An 11 year old red showing fantastic complexity, balance and length at close to a tenner is a real bargain. If this were from Bordeaux, it's be twice the price! A complex raspberry and cherry fruit with a hint of herbaceous, cedar--like oak all in balance. Hurry and buy it because stock is in limited quantities!"
