Origin
The name Muriel is a combination of the winemakers' family name of Murua, and Elciego, the name of the village where the winery is located, in the chalky soils of the Rioja-Alavesa. The wine spends 2 years in French and American oak, and 2 years in bottle before release.
Taste
A beautiful dark ruby red, with the classic Reserva characters of firm body and smoothly polished tannins, with subtle Mediterranean herb notes accompanying the typical wood and leather Rioja traits.
Enjoy
Great with wintery stews or hotpot, or minted lamb chops.

    Average Rioja

The first time I tried it, it was straight from the bottle and to be honest was disappointing and thin and with nowhere near the amount of flavours that other people seemed to find. Decanting it beforehand is a definite must, as it opens up after 40 mins or so, and you get more of the normal oaky rioja flavours. Relatively smooth, easy drinking though. Bought this for £6 a bottle, which is a decent price for the wine, but for goodness sake, change the overlong name, as the wine doesnt live up to the grand promises of the label.

    Good value for Money

it has a depth, well structured and needs some time to decant and disclose its full potential

    Smooth

At £6.99 this is excellent value. If Marques de Riscal is towards the top this is right behind it. I will try and buy again soon.

    A great value Rioja

A classic Rioja which has great depth of flavour and is great value. Beware the non-reserva as it is rather thin and nowhere near the same quality.

    Not for me

I seem to be in a minority of one, finding this harsh and astringent, and unlike any rioja I've tasted before. I had decanted it as well. Very odd.

  • "An oak-driven Spanish red - this wine has spent two years in French and American wood and you can certainly taste it – that’s had time to mellow into a spicy, rich wine that tastes almost as if it’s been pre-mulled, it’s so full of cloves, mace and bay flavours. The oak falls into balance as soon as you put it with food - say, lamb covered in herbs or a sticky, slow-cooked oxtail casserole."

  • "Majestic's current deal on the appealingly unreconstructed Muriel Rioja Reserva 2005. Ideal for the Easter lamb."
