Origin
Gyles Webb studied Oenology at Stellenbosch University, and then spent time abroad, before purchasing Thelema in 1983. Initially a run-down fruit farm, it was quickly converted into a wine estate. The farm is now made up of 157ha of land on the slopes of the Simonsberg.
Taste
A new release from Thelema, this wine is a fresh and exciting blend of a number of different varieties. Aged in mature oak barrels, it exhibits red fruit flavours with a clean, round finish.
Enjoy
Drinking very well at the moment but will develop beautifully with a couple of years ageing.

    Trading on its name

I like Thelema wines but this one I found distinctly average and no better than your average house table wine but because of Thelemas reputation I felt it was able to price it higher than it deserved to sell at. I will use my other botte for food recipes which require some red wine to be added, eg. ragu bolignese.

Staff Reviews

  • "The unlikely blend of Bordeaux and Rhône varieties with a dash of pinotage give this red an unmistakable South African feel. Bramble fruits and white pepper dominate on the nose whilst subtle undertones of juniper, ginger, and morello cherry emerge on the palate. A powerful wine with impressive harmony, this is a perfect match for the more esoteric meats from the farmers' market. "

Press Reviews

  • "A blend of 79% Shiraz and 21% Merlot, there's a little beetroot and rhubarb vegetal character here, with light spiciness and focused cherry and raspberry fruit. Sweet-fruited palate, though a bit of chocolate and toast adds some depth to the silky tannin structure. Deliciously drinkable. On some complicated back-to-back offer this will be £7.49 until 28th September 2009 when you buy two, then £7.99 until end October. Score: 89/100 "
