Grape

Gewürztraminer

Origin
Nelson experiences long, sunny days and Waimea are one of the best producers here. In the early nineties, Trevor and Robyn Bolitho were growing apples on this estate and diversified into vines, with impressive results.
Taste
An intense, tropical-fruit-laden wine, full of concentrated flavours of orange zest and lychee, embellished with floral notes on the nose and a delicate yet slightly unctuous texture.
Enjoy
The off-dry apéritif style really emphasises the wine's fruitiness. A marvellous match for spicy foods such as Thai curry.

    Poor example

I was really disappointed in this wine - especially given the higher than average price. We regularly match Gewurz with Thai food, but this was poorly balanced - I might as well have been drinking a tropical juice. NZ is usually so reliable, so definitely won’t be buying Waimea brand again.

    Delicious!

We loved this wine! It's exactly what I want from a Gewurz - sweet, lychee, honeyed flavours, and I think my husband would bath in it if he could (his first glass disappeared very swiftly!). It was absolutely delicious, though if you don't like sweeter wines I can see why this wouldn't appeal. I'm not sure about pairing it with food, but then it tasted so good by itself I don't think I want to sully it with other flavours!

    Gorgeous

Find it hard to understand the negative reactions. Yes, the nose is small, but the palate is smooth with notes of rose petals, lychees and honey, and frankly drop-dead gorgeous. I agree, though, it's too good to have with food. Better as an aperitif or with strawberries.

    Wowful

I'm a great fan of Top notch Gewurztraminer. BUT, this is just plain poor. Lacks any Gewurz. character, no bouquet to speak of and no real spice, as for floral notes forget it. Villa Maria so much better.

    good aperitif

very nice as an aperitif, but was just slightly too sweet and sickly with my spicy prawn pasta (and i love gewurztraminer), so something else next time.

    Makes No apologies

Yes it may smell like a bottle of Chanel No5 but it makes no apologies for what it is - and you should't either. It screams LIKE ME and you can't help but do so. Top Draw.

  • "New Zealand aromatic styles are becoming increasingly well distributed, which is a welcome trend in our view. This rose petal-perfumed, complex, spicy Gewürz has a touch of sweetness (well, 16 grams to be precise), but is delightfully well balanced. Score: 91/100"
