2 x John X Merriman 2008 Rustenberg, Stellenbosch

This wine has a full, smooth palate with blackberry flavours and cigar-box aromas. The name commemorates John Xavier Merriman (1841 - 1926), who purchased a farm in 1892 which later became Rustenberg Wines. He was the last prime minister of the Cape Colony before the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910.

The Malbec Reserva from the Viñalba estate has previously won a Decanter award for its quality. Sourced from vineyards at the foot of the Andes, grown at different altitudes to achieve the perfect balance between tannin and acidity. This wine literally wraps itself around every corner of your mouth with its ripe dark plum fruits, sweet tannins and dark chocolate and mocha. Flavours linger for a long time. This wine is made by Chief Winemaker, Virginia Willcock. Displaying biscuit characters and hints of lemon and subtle vanilla on the nose and a vibrant, fresh palate full of citrus, stone fruit and hints of toast. The oak is subtle, spicy and beautifully integrated whilst the finish is long and textured: a beautiful example of Margaret River Chardonnay.
