Emerging from nowhere in the 1990s, Chilean wines are now among the most popular of all - and justifiably so, since top quality is available across the price range. Many people only think of Merlot when it comes to Chilean red wine; This Explorer Case, representing five different varieties, will take you on a tour of the diverse range of red wines this great nation has to offer.

This estate is situated in some of the best alluvial terraces in the Alto Maipo region. Warm conditions here enable ripening of quality Cabernet, while cold nights preserve acidity and fruit purity in the grapes. This wine is aged for 10 months in French oak. A rich and full-bodied wine, with a powerful nose of blackcurrant, cocoa and tobacco leaf. Robust and weighty on the palate, with firm tannins surrounding a core of dark fruit. The body and tannin here will help conquer a rare steak, either right away, or in up to 5 years.
A beautifully rich and opulent Merlot from this flagship winery. Very much in the Californian style of Merlot it offers deep, plummy flavours smooth tannins and a touch of oak which holds it together elegantly. In the best tradition the wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve all the character of the fruit.
Winemaker Francisco Baettig limits the oak ageing to just 7 months for less than half the finished wine to retain typical fresh, fruity Pinot Noir characteristics. Ripe blackberry, floral aromas and a smooth, silky mouthfeel make this an excellent partner to roast pork or fillet of salmon.
Long Product Description
The fruit for this wine was sourced from a range of sites across the Aconcagua Valley, where the Mediterranean climate and cold nights encourage good fruit purity. Only 50% of the wine has been aged in French oak for added complexity, while retaining fruit character. Youthful in character with a bright crimson colour. A fruit-driven nose, with plenty of soft plum and bramble, and the merest hint of vanilla and spice from the oak, and the blend's 15% Carmenere. Equally at home with pasta in simple tomato-based sauces, as it is with red meat, grilled chops or sausages.
Although Chile has historically favoured other red varieties, the Central Valleys of Chile are becoming known as a home to some great value, high-quality Syrah. This is a nicely balanced example, made with medium-temperature fermentation and only partial oak maturation. Deep purple-tinged ruby red, and showing intense aromas of blackcurrant, with hints of black pepper and spice. A juicy, fresh palate with taut yet forgiving tannins, and a soft finish. Enjoy with merguez sausage, seasoned lamb chops, or spaghetti and beef meatballs.
