Grape

Sauvignon Blanc

Origin
The small appellation of Côteaux de Giennois has only 91 hectares planted with Sauvignon vines, and as it lives in the shadow of its neighbour, the renowned Pouilly-Fumé, its wines often slip under the radar and are hence excellent value.
Taste
The classic gooseberry fruit on the nose is intense yet restrained, and leads into a palate bursting with flavours of lime and nettle, delivered with a clean and crisp feel.
Enjoy
Enjoy with all fish, seafood and white meat dishes.

Stunning rich flavours. Need to serve with strong flavoured food. Starts stong with buttery overtones, finishes with almost sour goosberries. The very opposite of insipid. I love it.

    Order some more

Initially only 3 bottles as a trial - but after universal praise by all who have shared the 3 - am ordering more. A far more subtle sauvignon blanc. Very smooth. Buttery. None of the acidity sometimes associated with this grape.

Bought on the strength of the reviews and having tasted most of the NZ South Island wineries Sauvignon Blanc

Am I missing something?no nose, very flat and virtually tastless with a peppery aftertaste, nothing like any Sauvignon Blanc grape that I have ever tasted, sentiments shared by my wife, drank half of the bottle and gave the other half to our daughter, awaiting her comments.

    What a surprise

Crikey, this wine is good. Opened it prior to dinner but we had finished it before lifting a fork. Definitely buying more. Amazing value when purchasing two or more.

    A delicious surprise

A million miles away from the acidic, one-dimensional SBs all too prevalent in the sub £10 price range. The leafy, brambley nose doesn't really prepare you for such a rich, round mouthful, full of warm, green fruits, before finishing with a sharp tang of gooseberry. It might not be that sophisticated, but it is vivid and delicious - you really do get the sense that this wine is Pouilly-Fume's next door neighbour. £8 for this? Bargain.

Press Reviews

  • More subtle than cheap New Zealand versions (2011 Vintage)

"Côteaux du Giennois is a Loire appellation making sauvignon blanc. Its time has arrived, proving more subtle than cheap New Zealand versions, but less costly than top sancerre. Stella loves Domaine de Villargeau 2011, Côteaux du Giennois. (Susy Atkins, The Telegraph, 10th March 2013)"

  • Delivers gooseberry and pear flavours (2011 Vintage)

"Nettle and blackcurrant leaf aromas and a zesty quality of fruit that delivers gooseberry and pear flavours. (Anthony Rose, The Independent, 6th October 2012)"

  • "An interesting Loire sauvignon blanc that's beginning to transform into something quite different from the sharp model that might spring to mind. It's taking on honeyed notes (think confit pear drizzled with honey), and has a plump mouthful and rounded grassy taste, then just as it feels too succulent, sour gooseberries and a soft limestone quality cut in."
