Grape

Malvasia, Viura

Origin
Founded by Isaac Muga Martínez and his wife, Auro Caño in 1932, in Haro, at the Western end of Rioja Alta. The grapes are planted on clay and calcareous soils at the foot of the Obarenes mountains, which are 100% barrel fermented in new oak, from the winery's cooper.
Taste
Complex and toasted aromas with fresh, vibrant fruits give way to zesty lime, spicy and vanillin toasted oak flavours, fresh acidity, and a refreshing spicy finish.
Enjoy
Enjoy over the next three years with full-flavoured fish dishes, such as Paella.

Press Reviews

  • Balanced enough to allow the arresting zing to shine through (2011 Vintage)

"A blend of Malvasia and Viura that’s 100% barrel-fermented in new oak, giving a huge creamy texture to the wine. Yet it’s balanced enough to allow the arresting zing to shine through. Spot on with seafood paella. (Olly Smith, Mail on Sunday, 10th March 2013)"

  • big food-loving white rioja (2011 Vintage)

"Winter’s still here, so lap up this big food-loving white rioja with lashings of refined, oaky, appley fruit. (Jane MacQuitty, Saturday Times,10th March 2012)"

  • "White rioja used to be a horrid, mustard-yellow, malodorous experience. Not any more. Finally, rioja producers have woken up to realise that the viura grape, plus a dash of malvasia, grown in a good vineyard and treated respectfully with barrel fermentation and judicious but not overly lengthy barrel ageing, can give even white burgundy a run for its money. And that’s just what this elegant, restrained, tangy, cirtusy, oaky white rioja does."
