Grape

Furmint

Origin
The name Furmint is derived from 'froment', the Hungarian word for the wheaten colour of its wines. More commonly associated with the super-sweet dessert wines of Hungary, the Furmint grape is employed here in a dry white, to stunning effect.
Taste
Well-defined aromatics comprising rich honey notes and stone fruits on the nose. Plenty of acidity gives the palate crispness and bite, with mineral tinges accenting the fruit-laden, exotic feel.
Enjoy
Partner with strong creamy cheeses or rich poultry dishes.

    A surprisingly dry enjoyable wine

My first mouthful was surprising as I didn't expect the wine to taste the way it did. I really wasn't sure if I liked it but from then on I really enjoyed it. It was very dry mouth-filling and good with food or on its' own.

Wonderful wine which is different from the usual lot

This wine was on the tasting counter and when I was given a glass I had to buy a bottle (or, rather 2). A dry white but with a light fruity over tone so it's not sharp or overwhelmingly floral. Definitely worth a try!

    Highly acidic

It is evident that the favourable reviews apply to the 2009 vintage which was truly memorable - dry but with a long honey- like finish. This is the 2010 vintage and is quite different and Majestic are to be commended for accepting return of the remaining botles.

    Different

If you're a bit wearied by Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, then this is definitely worth a try. Dry, but with a hint of raisins, and the colour of pale varnish, it's certainly different. Went very well with smoked mackerel salad and a mushroom risotto, but I wouldn't try it with the likes of lemon sole or plaice. Reasonable value at £8.49; pricey at £9.99.

    What a belter!

The 2009 vintage is not as full on as the 2007, being lighter in colour and intensity. In many ways this will increase its mass appeal (some of my friends thought the 2007 was a bit too over the top for them - I loved it!). If you like a rich Chardonnay then try this, you will not be dissappointed by its complexity and length, and you will have saved a lot of money too!

Staff Reviews

  • Go on....try something different. You won't regret it!

"Ever since we first started stocking this wine with the 2008 vintage, I have been a huge fan. Whenever we receive an interesting wine in store, there is always a huge buzz surrounding it and an insatiable desire to crack one open immediately! I still continue to be amazed by this wine now that we have moved on to the 2009 vintage. The wine continues to offer complex notes of peach, juicy apples and honey with a nutty edge but it is fresher and crisper than the '08. It reminds me of a good quality white Burgundy but at a fraction of the price. A fantastic partner for creamy cheese or roast guinea fowl...although I can very happily drink it on its own!"

Press Reviews

  • A juicy and floral white (2010 Vintage)

"Here, the result is a juicy and floral white with touches of marmalade and caramel-centred richness and qualities that work well with creamy sauces. (Brian Elliott, Scotland on Sunday, 30th September 2012)"

    • Saturday Times - Winter Top 100 Under £8, Best Christmas white

"Plenty of you drink white wine with turkey and all the trimmings, and this rich, intense, sweet, spicy, 14.5 per cent Hungarian gets my Christmas 2010 vote. Royal Tokaji is renowned for its luscious late-harvest tokaji but this new, drier white, also made from the noble furmint, delivers truly delicious, long, smoky, perfumed cinnamon spice."

  • "The luscious, complex, toffee-coloured sweet wines of Tokaji in Hungary are one of the joys of the wine world, but the region is also capable of making intriguing dry whites, too. From one of Tokaji's greatest producers, this powerful, honeyed dry white is underpinned with succulent acidity that makes it compulsively drinkable."

  • "Tokaji is the home of some of the best sweet wines, but many of the grapes are picked early and instead fermented to dryness to make this extraordinary-tasting wine. It has weight, balance and a terrific ability to go with baked salmon, creamy pasta dishes and pork."
