Grape

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

Origin
The name commemorates John Xavier Merriman (1841 - 1926), who purchased a farm in 1892 which later became Rustenberg Wines. He was the last Prime Minister of the Cape Colony before the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910.
Taste
Intense blackberry, blackcurrant, undertones of mint, spice and cigar box on the nose. On the palate are plenty of blackcurrant and cassis, fresh mint, subtle oak and soft tannins.
Enjoy
This wine suits robust meat dishes, especially beef and lamb.

    Lovely stuff

We had a bottle or two of this for New Years Eve and it was superb. I have ordered more while it is on offer. I don't know enough about wine to give a complicated review but I do know that this tastes a bit special.

Nice for dinner with a few friends

But, for that special occasion I would prefer Rustenberg's "Peter Barlow". A nice Bordeaux style wine which I happily buy time and time again.

    Good value

Nice drop now but probably needs a year or two to develop fully.

    Decent stuff

Good value at a tenner. Smooth, Bordeaux style but also with a little of that unmistakeable South African flavour. Very nice now and again but I think the distinctiveness of it would start to pall after a bit.

    To those who wait ...

We've tried previous vintages and kept them in the cellar a year or two - they develop deep, rambling flavours. Gd value at a tenner a go ...

Staff Reviews

  • almost as great as Ernie Els

"If you fancy something different and you can see past the hotter climes of this classic bordeaux blend then this is the wine for you. Stellenbosch is the heartland of most of South Africa's fabulous wines - if you smell ever so carefully you may be able to imagine the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens ( with a prevailing wind ) in the glass. Great black fruits on the nose - bountiful blackberries, black cherry and a wonderful plum aroma. The smell of wonderfully aged wooden cigar boxes is evident together with blackberries and smooth cassis on the palate Pair with most beef dishes and great with Lamb - a great alternative to some riojas Smooth tannins ensure that this is a great wine for the price. certainly needs a few years to develop"

"In the right dose, a touch of leafiness can add complexity to a Bordeaux blend. Too much and it can feel overwhelmingly herbaceous. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc certainly flirts with herbaceousness, but has enough concentrated blackcurrant pastille character to pass muster as a barbecue red. Rating: 84/100 Goes with: Barbecues."
