Grape

Chenin Blanc

Origin
The second oldest sparkling wine producer from Saumur in the Loire, Bouvet Ladubay is owned by Champagne house Taittinger. Made by the traditional method, but from Chenin Blanc grapes, it is of excellent quality.
Taste
Fruity aromas and florals on the nose. Fine and persistent bubbles. Honeysuckle, acacia and bruised apples on the palate. Very elegant.
Enjoy
A surprisingly good match for fish and chips, this also makes a great apéritif.

    Brilliant

Some reviews have said 'better than champagne at this price' - I would add that to better than champagne at nearly all prices! I enjoy lighter champagnes - Laurent Perrier being my favourite - and I did a blind tasting with some friends where this was thrown into the mix. I thought it was significantly better than the majority of champagnes we tasted. It is light, nicely bubbly and distinctly fruity. It doesn't have that bitterness that I find comes with champagnes and is certainly an easy drinker. I decided to use it at a dinner party the other day and almost every guest commented on the quality of the champagne and they were greatly amused to see it wasn't champagne at all! It also has a smart looking label (reminiscent of Taittinger, who own it) which always helps! A delicious sparkler and I will certainly drink it again.

    Suerb value sparkling

Sparkling Saumur, and especially Bouvet is a bit of a family favourite. Frankly I'd drink this over £20 champagne every time. It has more taste and flavour than most "budget" champagne and far less of the acidity that one sometimes gets, especially at the cheaper end. The bottle looks good, the contents are very good and at the price there is nothing to compare. Don't tell everyone though!

    Elegant and great value

This is owned by the Tattinger Champagne folk and it has the family features of soft elegance with pear drop and brioche characteristics. Lacks the bite and flair of Tattinger Brut but at this price who cares!

Pleasant fizz, bottle looks great & good credit crunch saver if you don't want full price Champagne. You can just about tell the difference though.

  • A brilliant, bargain bubbly to crack open (NV)

"Big party in view? Then you and yours will need a brilliant, bargain bubbly to crack open for the occasion. Made exclusively from the Loire's classy chenin blanc grape and stored in long, cold galleries hewn out of the region's tuffeau stone, what you get from this fine sparkler is lots of zippy, zesty, waxy, floral, honey-baked apple fruit. (Jane MacQuitty, The Times, 21st July 2012)"
