"This is the first time I have ever tried any wine from this most prestigious estate in Sonoma. As I poured the wine into the glass, I was immediately struck by the awesomely intense lemon / yellow colour. The nose is extraordinarily complex, displaying sweet American oak, toast, stone fruits and a meaty intensity. Multi-dimensional on the palate, honeyed peach accompanied by subtle caramel, a hint of refreshing minerality and a whiff of camomile tea. The finish is long and enduring, both on the palate and in the memory. Best served at room temperature and could certainly benefit from a couple of years careful cellaring."

"Admiring the intesity of the deep, inky black hue of this wine, gives me the first indication of the weight and complexity that is to follow. An exuberant nose of sweet raspberries, cherries, mulberries, cloves, cardamon, white pepper, bitter chocolate and a pronounced licorice aroma combine to create a seriously classy bouquet. The palate too packs a real punch with unctuous black fruits, spice and an immense mouthfeel epitomising why CNDPs are often described as one of the heavyweights of the wine world. The finish is long, layered and multidimentional. Drink now or stash it away for a few years."

"A fantastic expression of Pinot Noir from the new world. This Burgundian styled gem displays a nose of soft red cherries, ripe raspberries, exotic Asian spices and vanilla. Soft and approachable on the palate, the wine has a lovely savoury earthiness that sits comfortably alongside the decadent sweet forest fruits. Superbly convincing now, but could benefit from a couple of years in the cellar (if you can resist it!)."

"Made exclusively from the Viognier grape in the northern Rhône, the 2007 Condrieu 'Invitare' from Chapoutier is a fantastic representation of this mighty variety. Pale lemon in colour, the wine has a refreshing nose of peach sorbet, lemongrass, cumquats, minerals, and flowery undertones. Deliciously rich and moreish, flavours of peaches and apricots dominate on the palate, being supported by wonderful minerally acidity. It's a winner in my book, and certainly a must have for the Summer months."

"This is one of my favourite second wines, and always offers superb value for money. The knockout nose of violets, cassis, eucalyptus with hints of saddle leather and earth. The palate exudes class and sophistication revealing concentrated and pure flavours of licorice, blackcurrant, sweet vanilla, earth and a minty Cabernet finish. Rich and round and supported by soft chewy tannins, the 2000 Sarget finishes long and pure."

" It has to be said, that this is the bees knees of Sancerres. An intense bouquet of pear drops, limes, flint and wet grass. The palate is unbelievably rich, but kept in balance by the limey acidity. Pears and green apples dominate on the palate, with the tongue tingling acidity and flavour of limes following up. Unbelievably refreshing and palate cleansing, the wine finishes long and clean."

  • A bottle of Promis 2006 Gaja, Toscana IGT - Majestic Wine

    Promis 2006 Gaja, Toscana IGT

The fruit flavours are very ripe with notes of cassis and spice (from the Syrah). Lovely ripe tannins frame the wine and there is a core of vital acidity which gives it a real sense of energy.

"From the most innovative producer in Barbaresco, this Syrah-dominated Tuscan blend is one of the most exciting Italian reds I have tried this summer. The nose is dominated by blackberry and plums but the precision of this fruit on the palate is balanced by a solid tannic structure and fresh acidity with sweet vanilla from a careful use of oak. At under £20 when you buy any 2 Italian wines, this IGT wine is not only an unusual find, but a real bargain from one of Italy's greatest winemakers."

  • A bottle of Le Soula Blanc 2006 Vin de Pays de Côtes de Catalanes - Majestic Wine

Le Soula Blanc 2006 Vin de Pays de Côtes de Catalanes

Using a blend of five grape varieties it is unsurprising that the palate is so complex with apricot, white musk and sesame characters. The result is a beautifully rich different style wine.

"A blend of 30% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Marsanne/Rousanne, 25 % Grenache Blanc 10% Maccabeu and 10% Malvoisie. An intrigueing nose of Granny Smith apples, apricot blossom, kaffir lime leaves, minerals and a hint of root ginger. The palate delivers something quite unique and special, green apple skins, pineapples, grapefuit and almonds. With a subtle kick of oak on the finish, the wine is long and elegant in the mouth and unbelievably morish!"
