This wine is a rare example of a dry fino that has undergone a small degree of oxidation, and therefore partial development into an amontillado style, and has an estimated age of 20 years. Retaining the classic fino structure but showing added power, this wine exhibits a delicate golden hue, and intriguingly complex secondary aromas of roasted nut and pine resin.
Founded in 1880, Ramos Pinto is one of the pioneering Port houses of the Douro Valley. This Tawny is a single-estate wine, blended from a selection of vintages, averaging 20 years of age. The older wines contribute the characteristic tawny colour and mature fruit flavours, while the younger wines add freshness and vigour.
Equipo Navazos source their sherry from a number of established producers, selecting only barrels that display particularly well defined characteristics for bottling, creating a range of unique releases. This rare Palo Cortado is supremely elegant and intense, offering a blend of citrus peel, roasted almond and sandalwood aromatics, and a drying, incisively focused palate.
This single quinta port is wonderfully concentrated with spicy aromas and well-defined dried fruit flavours redolent of figs, raisins and prunes.
"It is a mammoth, opaque, statuesque vintage port of remarkable depth and power." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 96 points
"This impressive vintage port, from a firm that has not been numbered among the great port houses of the last century, may turn out to be the most impressive wine from Croft in decades. The healthy purple/black color is followed by copious aromas of licorice, chocolate, and over-ripe black fruits. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with layers of juicy, succulent, full-throttle fruit, glycerin, high alcohol, and powerful tannin, this large-scaled, youthful vintage port will benefit from 7-10 years of cellaring. It should drink well for 30+ years". 93 points. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
This wine is part of an extremely limited release of only 900 half-bottles, from a solera created by Fernando de Castilla. It is drawn from the 'bota punta' or end barrel of the solera, which is said to have acquired a uniquely deep and complex character compared to all other barrels in the solera. A rare treat for any sherry lover, for immediate enjoyment or for extended cellaring.
'The nose has rich black fruit with spice and a hint of cigar-box. A smooth, rich palate, with good fruit and obvious alcohol, which retains a fiery presence.' www.thewinedoctor.com
Fonseca is consistently one of the very best producers of vintage port, and 1977 one of the classic vintages of the late 20th Century.
"It will keep for twenty years. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020". 90 points. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.
A limited release of a small solera that has been bottled at optimum maturity, and without filtration, showing the wine's character in all its traditional and undiluted glory. An invigoratingly fresh flavour profile, with intense autolytic notes and an elegant yet powerfully mouth-filling character. Enjoyable upon release, but may be carefully stored for many years.
2003 was a great vintage for Port, where winemakers were able to capitalise on the low yields and concentration brought about by the high temperatures, to create intense and focused wines. Sumptuous port from a quality producer.
