Grape

Gamay

Origin
From old vines on the border of the Brouilly cru, this is a Beaujolais-Villages wine with the depth and complexity of a top cru wine. The Château itself dates back to 1535, with grapes now used to make wines on the estate instead of being sold to negociants.
Taste
Fresh strawberry aromas and pleasant earthy notes, light tannins and rounded finish give a superior finish than its AC suggests.
Enjoy
Can be served slightly chilled but deserves respect due to the soft aromas and lashings of fresh fruit. Superb with cured meat.

A poor example of Beaujolais Villages

I have been an amateur de Beaujolais for many years and have visited the region annually since 1992. This is not a good example of Beaujolais Villages, lacking fruit and charm. There are many better examples, including Jadot Combes des Jacques (Tesco), Duboeuf, and (from the vineyard) Dominique Jambon (Lantignie). There are many others. To describe this wine as approaching cru quality is a gross over-hype of a pedestrian wine. I can only assume that some of the poor 2008 vintage had been kept and was mixed in with what was otherwise a very fine year. A great turn-off.

One of the most pleasant Beaujolais-Villages 2008

Very pleasant Beaujolais with quite complex finish. My second bottle chilled in fridge just under an hour which gave it a completely different dimension. Recommend this at £8 a bottle!

Staff Reviews

  • "Bring back the Summer during these dark Winter days with this fuller bodied Beaujolais-Villages. Made with grapes sourced from old vines the nose is packed with forest fruits and a hint of vanilla, while the palate delivers confected strawberry and silky tannins. With the finnesse of a Brouilly and the body of a Morgon, Beaujolais-Villages of this quality could easily be confused with one of the ten cru appelations. Like an English summer this Beaujolais is gone all too quickly so be sure to snap some up soon! "

  • "If you haven't caught on to the 2009 Beaujolais yet, they are a lot cheaper than Bordeaux from the same vintage and just as enjoyable in their way. This one is typically juicy and bright, with bags of red fruits and lip-smacking acidity. Drink it well chilled. Score: 89/100"
