Grape

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

Origin
From the gravelly dunes of Léoville-Barton's vineyards, leading down to the bank of the Gironde, La Réserve is the second wine of this famous property. As an earlier drinking version of the grand vin, this is real value for money.
Taste
With a classic 'left bank' nose of smoky blackberry fruit and pencil lead, the palate is rich and rounded with assertive tannins, ample fruit and well integrated oak.
Enjoy
Serve with shoulder of lamb braised in wine. Drinking well at the moment, but will keep for another 5 or so years.

    Seductive and Classy

This is exactly what a second wine should be, an early maturing shadow of the main wine at a fraction of the price. Currently the 2005 Ch.Leoville Barton is selling for around £125 a bottle and is one for the long haul. For £25 this is exceptional value. This wine is very well balanced with complex and varied aromas and a deep garnet hue. The 2005 is drinking well now, but if you can manage to keep it for a year or two it will be even better.

    Perfect Drinking

This second wine is drinking perfectly now. Decant and leave to breath and you will be rewarded. Good balance of tanins and flavour ensure that you'll want a second bottle!

    Superb Wine

This wine drinks well and the consistency is superb. a complex foretaste breaking into a merry dance as the smile appears on your face. You can tell the pedigree from this historic estate

    Good balance

This was the top priced wine in a home tasting I've jusy done with 12 people (not wine geeks). It was up against a £9 right bank Bordeueax and a £12 Rosemount Estate Show Reserve 2003 Shiraz. The voting was 50/50 between this and the Shiraz - no one rated the right bank wine, too 'farmyardy' for most. I think this is a very well balance wine, drinking well now with still a good bit of fruit but OK on tannins. But I do question whether its £25 of value...

Staff Reviews

  • "I rushed a little with this one. I was late for dinner at some relatives and didn't have enough time to allow for proper decanting. The nose was closed at first but then did start to slowly open up in the glass, gently releasing dark fruits aromas with some hints of vanilla and sweet spice. Still plenty of fruit on the palate but both the tannin and acidity certainly still required some time to balance out. It is drinking ok now, especially if you can give it a good 4 hour decant, but I really think this wine will reward those who are patient with it in the cellar."
