Grape

Pinot Noir

Description

Named as its light, delicate colour matches that of the eye of the Partridge, this is a subtly delicious Champagne from Devaux. Coming from the Côtes des Bars in the south of the region, the red Pinot Noir grapes develop an unusual level of ripeness, lending the wine its hue despite a gentle pressing. Although certainly delicate in style, there is a perfect weight of fruit, developing fine biscuity characteristics as the wine matures.

    Lovely on a Summer Evening

My wife's all-time favourite (and, believe me, she's tried lots). Very pale pink colour and, unlike robust Champagnes such as Roederer or Bollinger, easy to drink on its own - lovely on a summer evening in the garden. My only reservation would be that, to me (and all our taste buds differ) Oeil de Perdrix doesn't actually taste pink - there's an edge of grapefruit. Not unpleasant, just unexpected in a rosé Champagne.

    Perfect all rounder

Great taste (slight sweet edge) does not leave a nasty after taste like some more expensive Champagne's. Light in taste and a gentle pink colour. Easy to drink which makes you reach for a second glass!

Staff Reviews

  • Affordable Elegance

"This has long been a favourite of mine, and I know that many of my colleagues would agree. It's a slightly more delicate style of rose Champagne, with a pale pink colour and a fine mousse. The fruit is perfectly balanced by a richer, toasty note in the background. Overall, an incredibly elegant Champagne that is a perfect aperitif, or makes a great match with light seafood dishes."

Press Reviews

  • Delicious (NV Vintage)

"The pinot noir grape brings a delicate pink tinge to this delicious champagne from Devaux with its raspberry mousse flavour. (Anthony Rose, The Independent, 9th March 2013)"

  • Long been popular (NV)

"Named after the colour of the partridge's eye, this good-value pink champagne has long been popular for its very pale, coppery hue and light, crisp, biscuity style. (Susy Atkins, The Telegraph, 30th September 2012)"

  • Deliciously flavoursome (NV)

"An absolute fixture of Majestic's list (and often on offer) this has a delicate colour - partridge eye indeed - and a lightly biscuity nose with raspberry and gentle toast. Quite mellow, quite full on the palate, with delicious freshness and yet some rolling richness. Deliciously flavoursome Champagne to welcome Easter morning (The Wine Gang, Spring 2012)"

  • "No summer pink selection would be complete without champagne and this is Britain’s best sub-£20 buy, easily outclassing supermarket bubblies. Made by Devaux from pinot noir grapes grown in the outlying Côte des Bar, this prettily labelled pink bubbly delivers ripe, elegant, blackberry and blackcurrant-scented fruit."
