Grape

Macabeo, Parellada, Xarle-lo

Origin
Parellada is a highly regarded Catalan white grape variety that is synonomous with Cava production. It is the least planted of the three Cava varieties but can produce a fine, quality wine from cooler climates and relatively poor soils.
Taste
Fresh and harmonious, displaying plenty of apple and toast flavours, yet intensely dry and mouth-watering.
Enjoy
A perfect drink to serve prior to a barbecue on a hot summer day.

    perfect..

I bought 30 bottles of this cava for my wedding last August. We'd originally budgetted for a more expensive champagne, but having tried this at a tasting, snapped it up. It's easily drinkable on a summer's day with enough depth of flavour to make it compete with its more expensive counterparts. Highly recommended.

    waste of money

yes, it's cheap but incredibly gassy and also bitter, I had to use it to make Bellinis

    Not for me

Tried this as an alternative to the usual and was disappointed - very little flavour or character. Will stick with Codorniu in future.

    Pleasing sparkly

Was not disappointed for a good value sparkling party wine. Will order again when wanting large quantities for lots of guests. A crowd pleaser.

    Age it

I found a bottle of this cava that I had forgotten. I guess it had been hanging around for a while. I thought it had improved and had more depth of taste. Not complex but a good cheap sparkler.

Press Reviews

  • "A cheap méthode champenoise summer fizz with elegance and attitude, expect plenty of smoky, scented, lemony fruit with this pleasing Spanish cava, coupled with a tart, tangy finish - just what you would expect from a youthful Codorníu bubbly that has around 12 months' ageing on lees, or yeasty sedement - three months longer than the compulsory time."

  • "At the humblest level, Spanish cava when it's good is often just the ticket for parties, and, dare I suggest it, weddings. Both the crisp new Cava Calamino NV, and redcurranty Calamino Rosé, fit the bill."
