Origin
This is Kanonkop's flagship wine - a Bordeaux blend comprising a majority Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In the best Bordeaux tradition this wine is unfiltered.
Taste
Deep, ruby red colour - concentration of blackcurrant, cassis and tea leaf aromas. Good body with combination of power and elegance. Silky sweet tannin that leads to dry finish.
Enjoy
Capable of at least a decade of bottle maturation and needs decanting.

Fantastic value for a full-bodied beast

Decanted for 2 hours before a blind tasting, this was the star of the show. With a full nose of blackberry, cherry, plum and spice backed with nice hint of smoke this was a huge crowd pleaser. At times the smoke was almost peaty - a slightly charred aroma that was a very interesting counterpoint to the fruit. The body was fabulously soft, smooth, fruity with a hint of spice and smokiness to give it a complete, balanced mouthfeel. It is superbly structured and complex enough to make one think about the wine, but not so complex that it requires work to find the flavour. The finish was lovely. The wine softened on a medium-long finish with excellent development throughout. A 9/10 wine that blew Chateau Batailley 2005 out of the water (the Batailley had a magnificent nose but failed to match the Kanonkop on the palate). A superb value wine for a special occasion.

"Then this is it. One of 2 (the other is Muga Prado Enea) that I consistently recommend to people wanting to spend £20-30 on something special. Beautifully balanced, released just about ready to drink, but capable of a decade or more of ageing. Styled as classic left bank Bordeaux, but with a bit more heft, it's full of earthy black fruit, cedar and spice-box complexity with fine-grained tannins. Hopefully you can find a rib of beef to do it justice."
