Grape

Chardonnay

Origin
On of the Languedoc's highest altitude sites, Domaine l'Aigle sits at 450m above sea level. The cool temperatures here afford the grapes up to an extra month on the vine than in low-lying areas, developing ripeness while maintaining acidity for wines with great finesse.
Taste
Oak fermented and aged on its lees, this wine closely resembles quality oaked white Burgundy from the Côte d'Or. White fruit and lemon flavours, nuanced with hints of flowers, hazelnut and almond.
Enjoy
Serve lightly chilled with fish, roasted poultry, or soft goat's and sheep's cheeses.

Real class at a sensible price

Drank this back to back with a £40 Puligny Montrachet and the D'Aigle stood up very well. Lovely bouquet; fine structure; harmonious and nicely balanced; good depth of fruit and length. Lacks the class and finish of the Puligny but certainly reminiscent of the style.

    What A Surprise!

I wasn't too sure what to expect from a Chardonnay grown so far south and at altitude - and at such a low price. So the big, rich, buttery mouthful, full of citrus and almonds, came as a very pleasant surprise. The oak is Old World subtle rather than New World in-yer-face, but at 14%, the alcohol really packs a punch, so be warned. It's also doesn't like being chilled too much - it's happiest a couple of degrees warmer than you'd expect for a comparable Burgundian Chardonnay. I'll be getting more of this . . .

    If you like butter....

This wine has incredible balance. You can taste the fruit but also get a big buttery back splash. It is probably as close to a big red taste as you can get in a white wine, making it the perfect winter white alternative to a red. Particularly yummy with creamy pasta sauces.

Staff Reviews

  • A great value alterative to White Burgundy

"This is a really classy Chardonnay. On the nose there are notes of citrus and tropical fruits mixed in with butter and nuts. On the palate it's more of the same, wonderful fresh fruit flavours with creamy oak and a very fresh zesty finish. A perfect match for roast chicken or fish pie."

  • delicious, bold, nutty (2009 Vintage)

"Time to snap up this delicious, bold, nutty, smoky-toasty, 14 per cent alcohol, winter-suiting chardonnay from one of the top higher, cooler spots in southern France, Limoux. (Jane MacQuitty, SATURDAY TIMES, 28th January 2012)"
