Origin
Meaning 'the old farmhouse', this wine hails from the red Mediterranean soils and chalk debris of the slopes of Mount Ventoux near the town of Mazan in the south of the Rhône Valley.
Taste
A warm, elegantly structured, spicy red with intense jammy blackberry fruits, strawberry hints and soft tannins.
Enjoy
A great quality red and a fantastic companion for meats or cheeses. Having been only lightly fined and filtered, decanting is advisable.

    Look out for the chicken

We always enjoy this wine. It's an easy one to remember, just look for the chicken. Never had a duff one.

    Big name, little wine

Considering the vineyards and the house that made this wine I had been expecting much, much more.

not very structured and taste as far too young

But I am not sure it will get better though. It's ok with strong cheese and bread, but very tough on its own. There are a lot of better wine at this price.

    Poor value

At £6.99 (on offer) it's still too expensive. Better value on the bottom shelves at Tesco and Sainsbury? 'great elegance' on the label. Right not to expect at this price. Better after taking a breather.

    Great value, full-flavoured, easy-drinking

Impeccably made, well-balanced, full-flavoured. Good value every day drinking, and excellent with food.

    A Little weak of flavour

Took the advice to decant, but I have to say there is nothing inherently wrong with this wine, just nothing outstanding either. A perfectly OK dinner wine, but to drink on its own it lacks a little character.

  • "Here is a bargain way to enjoy the ripeness of Grenache in the southern Rhône, which resulted from the exceptionally warm, dry summer of 2009. This is made from grapes grown at cooler, higher altitudes than the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards about which I have been writing this week, and at higher yields, so the grapes were juicier and the wine is far simpler, fruitier and designed for much earlier drinking - now, in fact. The grapes for this wine - typically 50 per cent Grenache, 20 per cent Syrah, 15 per cent Cinsault and 15 per cent Carignan - were grown on the flanks of Mont Ventoux, at up to 300m above sea level. The wine is fermented in cement and aged in large, old oak barrels until bottling in July. La Vieille Ferme is the creation of the talented Perrin family, whose family estate, Château de Beaucastel, is the source of some of the finest red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. La Vieille Ferme is their négociant label, meaning they buy in the ingredients and make and market the wine in considerable quantity. When the vintage is right, these Vieille Ferme wines can represent exceptional value. This is a friendly, exuberant, fruity wine made to be enjoyed over the next 12 months, with casual meals (I could imagine it with sausages and mash). It’s also screwcapped for maximum freshness."

  • "Chock full of easy-drinking, sunshine-drenched juicy fruit with a touch of spice for interest, but not enough to impinge on its straightforward friendly style. A quaffing wine for informal suppers."

  • "From the Perrin family, the people behind the extremely smart and highly regarded Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, La Vieille Ferme (in its red and white incarnations) is a consistently good and widely available personal favourite - the kind of wine I grab when I'm in a hurry at the local offie. The 2009 vintage is full of the joys of a warm summer: abundant raspberry and blackberry with a hint of spice and a nudge of tannin."
