  • A bottle of Vigneto Solimpia 2006 Castello della Paneretta

Vigneto Solimpia 2006 Castello della Paneretta

This distinctively earthy flavoured wine offers aromas of bitter-sweet cherries and spice. Rich, with firm, dry, herbal tones on the finish.

"Even for outside experts the Italian wine scene can be confusing, and some brilliant wines can pass almost unnoticed. Do take time to notice this though. Like many Tuscan estates, interesting wines are made outside the rigid local wine laws, so this is carries no designation. However, it’s 100% Sangiovese made in a modern style – fresh, with some oak influence and an opulent, full-bodied mouthfilling character."

  • "The rather bland packaging masks a high quality, interesting wine, which instantly wins over all who taste it. On the nose there is a rich, creamy complexity whilst the palate is buoyed by luxurious, peachy fruit and fresh acidity. Not all wines made by expat winemakers are special, but this is! It would be a great alternative to chardonnay, having the weight and feel of an expensive white burgundy."

  • A bottle of Clos d'Yvigne Le Petit Prince 2005 Côtes de Bergerac

Clos d'Yvigne Le Petit Prince 2005 Côtes de Bergerac

Predominantly Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc, this smooth, supple red shows powerful plum and cherry fruits on the nose, supported by firm tannins, spice and well-balanced acidity on the palate.

"Bergerac is a wine-producing region formerly popular but now lost in the rush to internationalisation. However, the best wines remain as characterful reminders of times past and, like many ‘old fashioned’ wines, go brilliantly with the foods produced locally. Drink this with charcuterie or game to make both the food and wine sing – the slightly dusty tannins, dark fruit and pronounced acidity are spot on. This is no throwback though – the bonus is that modern winemaking techniques mean the wine is 100% correct too, without too much local character!"

  • A bottle of Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Eichberg 2006 Philippe Zinck

Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Eichberg 2006 Philippe Zinck

The nose is exotic and spicy, showing lychees and honey, and the palate delivers powerful, opulent and intense flavours. Excellent with goats cheese, or even with fruit pies.

    • 2

"Many Gewurztraminer wines can be cloying, especially the ‘better quality’ examples. However, this combines weight and intensity with elegance that leaves you wanting more. Even so a little will go a long way, so it’s best served as an aperitif. Partner it with strongly flavoured tapas for a brilliant start to a meal."
