St-Julien was the most consistent of the Médoc communes and Beychevelle, a delightful château at the southern edge of the appellation, is a good example. There's an archetypally claret style here, with warm plum crumble and black cherry fruit, a medium weight palate, and a nice balance of acidity, oak and tannins. Not a wine for extended ageing, this will make a lovely drink in the medium term. Drink 2011-2017. 14.9 points (out of 20)

"Serious, savoury nose. Real lift. A refreshing drink! Some light tannins are pretty chewy but not green. Not a big wine but a well balanced one. 16.5 points (out of 20)."

"A fruity red, with currants and berries. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a light finish. Falls away quickly. 84-87 points."
