Grape

Sangiovese, Merlot

Origin
Casale di Valle is a 16th-century villa near Florence, which was once a hunting lodge frequented by the nobility, as well as an area of wine growing. Since the 1990s it has been replanted with improved Sangiovese clones for wines of better quality and ageing potential.
Taste
Bright ruby red in colour, with density and persistent legs. Aromas of cherry and fresh red fruits mingle with spicy pepper notes. Lively and supple on the palate, with fine, rounded tannins.
Enjoy
Drink with grilled poultry dishes, or with smoked ham and olives.

    Wine tasting

Gathered a few friends over for a tasting to find a 'house red' for £8 +-£2. 5 Red wines in the same price range where tested. We found this wine to un-structured, with a kick of the Merlot addition which is the only help. Whilst this 'might' work with some salty cheese like parmigiano this still does not reach all the way. Something like the Copertino would be a much more 'grape' for the same money.

    Dead on Arrival?

Quite pale colour. Nose has slightly vegetal character with very little fruit detectable. Taste: rather thin, with no fruit to balance the tannins; if I didn't know the vintage I would have judged this to be a 5 - 7 yr old wine well past its prime. A very poor example of a young DOCG Chianti.
