Grape

Sangiovese

Origin
Tuscany's signature red grape, at home in the warm Tuscan climate, and here with the expertise of Banfi's winemaking, Sangiovese really shows its varietal character.
Taste
Well-defined notes of liquorice and cedar on the nose are followed by an intense yet medium-bodied palate crammed with flavours of red and black cherries.
Enjoy
Classic tomato-based Italian dishes rarely go better with anything else!

    Gorgeously drinkable

This is a stunner. It is soft yet strong, in a good way. Conjures up the spirit of Italy and transports you there. I am reordering even though the special offer is no longer available - it's that good!

    If you like Chianti...

Basically this is everything you would expect from a good Chianti, but in a lighter, simpler style. Textbook Sangiovese flavours of sour/sweet red cherry, with good acidity, savoury balance, and just enough juicy tannins. Lots of flavour, but goes down easy. Lovely everyday wine for an informal dinner or just for a relaxing glass on its own in the evening.

    never an £8.99 wine

Well It's Ok but not what I expect from a good Sangiovese, no plummy notes, no depth. Tried leaving the second half for 24 hours breathing, served at about 18 C. different yes, better no

  • Robust, juicy, medium-bodied (2009 Vintage)

"Need a little Mediterranean cuisine to make a change from all that seasonal food over the past week or so? And are budgets tight after present-buying splurges? This wine fits both requirements – a good price for a robust, juicy, medium-bodied, straightforward bottle that is perfect for a pizza or a bowl of pasta with tomato-based sauces. (Terry Kirby, INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY, 1st January 2012)"
