Grape

Pinot Grigio

Origin
Alto Adige is in the far North of Italy, with vineyards lining either side of the valley formed by the River Adige. The reputation for quality, particularly from it's aromatic white wine, is typified by this high end Pinot Grigio from one of the region's better producers.
Taste
This is in a different league to entry-level Italian Pinot Grigio, balancing a rich, pure palate of peach, melon and pear fruit with the crispest of finishes.
Enjoy
This wine will marry well with fresh tomato salads and seafood dishes such as grilled sea bass or barbecued king prawns.

An excellent quality Pinot Grigio at a very good price

As PGs go, this is one of the best. Having tried quite a few this really stands out and is an excellent quality wine. Definitely worth a try to move away from the standard PGs.

    Where's the wow?

I admit I tend to drink Pinot Grigio when I want something reliable that goes down easily. I thought I'd pay a bit more with this wine to open up the throttle and see what this grape can do. And the answer was...not a great deal more. It's fine, but not memorable (or notably better than wines little more than half the price).

    there is better...

None of the family liked this when compared to the excellent Breganze Superiore, I shalln't be buying this again - it was over fruity for my taste

    OK!

Sorry Andy I have to disagree! Alto Adige has a great reputation but this PG is disappointing. The home of PG is Friuli especially the Colli so get the Majestic buyer over there!

    'Sforza Grigio!

The unlovely days of the mid-70's trattoria bestowed on us the encounter with cheap soave as our reference point for Italian whites (and even cheaper 'chianti' for the red!). A decade or two later and those same restaurants were draining the lake of inferior pinot grigio whilst assuring us of its authenticity. Little wonder, then, that we turned to the New World to find that antipodean and latin american growers were producing stunning results from this grape, often, ironically, with Italian flying winemakers. Back in Italy, mid-price examples of 'the grey' are at best just about adequate when well-chilled on a hot day. So it is a rare and delightful treat to come across Stella Alpina's version from the far north of Italy. This offers a wine that is an aristocrat: suave, debonair and displaying impeccable breeding. A full yet crisp mouthfeel gives way to a cocktail of fruit flavours. Ultimately, perhaps, too sophisticated to drink on its own, it will find a food partner in its class and marry perfectly; a plainly roasted free-range chicken, or wild salmon fillets in a beurre blanc, The name means 'alpine star' and a star it is in every respect.

    great summer wine

Full of lovely summer fruit. Unlike cheap PG, this is a full flavoured quality wine that goes well with spicy chicken dishes.

  • It has delicate, fresh apple and pear fruit (2011)

"A lot of people who buy Italian Pinot Grigio aren't looking for a wine with a great deal of personality, in which case this wine wouldn't let them down. It has delicate, fresh apple and pear fruit and a whistle-clean, lightly mineral, dry finish. (The Wine Gang, www.thewinegang.com, July 2012)"

  • Pear skin, almond, appropriately tame (2011 Vintage)

"Pear skin, almond, appropriately tame. Nice milky mouthfeel. Almost Chablis in texture (Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 25th May 2012)."
