Grape

Merlot, Syrah or Shiraz

Origin
A limited parcel from an award-winning estate, whose proximity to the Mediterranean coast provides a tempering influence to the effects of the hot summers, making for wines of ripeness and purity. Spends 12 months in barrel before bottling.
Taste
Concentrated blackcurrant fruit and a muscular but smooth tannic structure. The plummy Merlot benefits from the bolder, spicier aromatics of the Syrah, which offers rustic notes of heathland herbs.
Enjoy
Partners hearty stews, as well as strong cheeses or offal dishes.

    Value for money.

For 7.49 a bottle this is good value for money. It displays fresh blackcurrant fruit with tight well balanced tannins. As others have commented previously, in terms of secondary flavours you get smoke, tar, tobacco, brambles, pepper and maybe a faint echo of bitter chocolate.

    Worth it

A nose full of tar and tobacco, a mild clusterbomb effect on the palate and gums, and a pleasingly cough-mixture finish. In other words, at £7.49 a bottle (including discounts) it is approximately £2 over my Platonic price point, but still worth it. http://sedimentblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/tale-of-two-tastings-chateau-la-croix.html

    Wedding winner!

My wife and I chose this for our wedding to accompany Welsh Black Beef and it went down an absolute storm. It's smokey and peppery, but bursting with fruit and really smooth. Highly recommended

    Better than supermarket booze

It won't disappoint, but you'll tire of it by the end of the bottle. Brambly hedgerows with a few blackcurrents thrown in, but lacks that plummy splash that merlot fans adore.

Press Reviews

  • "A really good value blend from one of our favourite Languedoc discoveries of the last few years, this combines Merlot with 40% Syrah. It’s smoky and elegant, with spicy, black pepper aromas and fleshy tannins. A blueprint that other producers should follow. Score: 88/100"
