Grape

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon

Origin
This lovely cru bourgeois is unusual in that it is a Merlot-based blend from the Médoc, where Cabernet normally dominates the proceedings. The result is a supple wine with more everyday appeal than most.
Taste
Offering a soft and jammy fruit character, with subtle notes of damp earth and orange peel on the nose and a supple palate. Scroll down to view our short video tasting.
Enjoy
Utterly approachable, this is a great match for simple stews or cassoulet.

    Still good

Had about my 6th bottle of this wine with a roast tonight. Good aroma, plum, bit of spice. Decent length and still plenty of power. Never ceases to surprise me how good this wine is for less than £10.

Best value Bdx at this price

I buy and sell Bdxs at auction and at the moment the market is full of overpriced junk completely unrepresentative of their supposed appellations. But this is a gem, buy 12 and drink now, and at xmas. Its not a keeper but its a truly representative Medoc and shows just how under valued the 2001 vintage is.

    Disappointing

I'm a bit fed up with buying medocs from Majestic and ending up wondering why I bothered. This lacks any real fruit and makes you realise that the New World just does it better. On special offer it's not expensive but it's not a wine to remember.

    Disappointed

If you buy 2 bottles then it is £7.99 which is ok for this wine, but if you buy it at £11.99 then it is overpriced.

    Bottle aged bargain

I've been drinking the 2001 as an everyday claret for the last year. Now starting my first case of the 2002. Disagree with Pete Waldron. For me the 2002 is juicier with just the right amount of tannin that settles as soon as you swill the wine around the glass. Some bottles of the 2001 appear to be fading. From my initial taste, the 2002 appears at its peak. Decent bottle aged claret at en primeur price. Save yourself ten years!

  • "Gorgeous, mature, truffley, cedary Christmas claret at a tasty price, given that other vintages sell for nearer £20. Remarkably, Grivière’s merlot, cabernets sauvignon and franc vineyards were bought from first-growth Lafite 20 years ago, which helps to explain why this cru bourgeois is so good."
