Grape

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc

Origin
A Bordeaux blend from one of the Cape's oldest estates, this wine has been named after the Caracal, a wild lynx-like cat indigenous to South Africa, which has recently been introduced to the Neethlingshof vineyards as a natural 'Darwinian' form of pest control.
Taste
12 months maturation in new and old French oak barrels has lent this wine lovely toasty and cedary aromas, and smoothed the ample tannins which envelope the core of juicy blackberry and mulberry fruit.
Enjoy
Drink with slow-braised meats such as oxtail or pork belly.

    Absolutely delicious!

I never ususally pay this much for wine (not even at the discounted price), so was wary. It is definitely worth it - this is a really good, full bodied, spicy, warming, just a marvellous flavour. The friend we shared it with was highly praising of it also.

    excellent quality and value

I tried this wine recently and found the description to be totally accurate. A bordeaux-like wine of exceptional quality at a much more affordable price. An absolute winner in my book. Will be adding to my cellar, and it won't stay there for long.

    Quality wine, reasonably priced

Bit of a bargain for a quality Bordeaux blend, but give it plenty of air as it really opens up and develops beautifully after it was a bit closed straight out of the bottle. Tonnes of complexity, and finesse, not your usual New World beast.

it is simply hard to find a better new world brodeaux blend for the money

this is a very well made wine , even the oak is moderate and not heavy handed. for the money 5 stars . a real surprise and I'll be buying more and adding this to my favorites list . new world style with a restrained hand in the winemaking.

  • Fantastic Bordeaux varietal with a story to tell

"As the dusty Shiraz and Pinotage from SA remain divisive amongst many, my favourite Saffa wines are the Bordeaux style blends. Neetlingshof's Caracal is a perfect example. Smooth tannins and juicy blackcurrant flavours make it a beaut with any red meats, and its refined character is bound to impress friends. It comes from a wine farm steeped in history, and is named to celebrate the return of the pest-controlling Caracal to the estate after a prolonged (and enforced) absence. You'll be hard pressed to find better value from SA at £11.99."
