Not as good as it reads

I bought four bottles of this wine off the back of reading some promising reviews. The price seems very reasonable, considering this normally retails around the £14 mark. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. For a Rioja this is extremely thin wine, leaving no lasting taste on the palate. Sorry to be so glum, but we really didn't like it that much.

These reviews need to come with a health warning - I left a review of the 2003 which I thought was excellent. More recent reviews show uniform disappointment and presumably relate to a later vintage (?2004). Reviews should not be allowed to stand when a vintage is substituted - VERY misleading. Seems clear that the 2004 is not up to the mark.

    Good not Great

Having had 2 bottles our opinion is that the Vina Eguia Reserva 2005 is a better! This wine seems 'thin' for a Gran Reserva.

    Disappointing, lightweight rioja.

I have to agree with the other reviewers who found this wine to be rather disappointing. Whilst the wine does have some fruit, the wine is thin and balanced to the lean, astringnet end of the spectrum. It tastes like a very ordinary reserva. At the discounted price it is OK but no more. At the full price it represents poor value.

    Good

This wine is like many, depends on price and treatment. At the discounted price its a good buy. To get the best out of this wine serve at room temperature and open it the day before you wish to drink it! This is one of many that do not mature enough to please the pallet after only a couple of hours.

    price check?

Why do your 2 staff reviewers give the price as £7.99 when it is currently at £11.99 (when 2 bottles are bought)?

  • Great Value Rioja Gran Reserva

"This is an absolute gem of a wine, and is a steal at £7.99; perfect for those who want all the complexity and flavour of a Rioja Gran Reserva but without having to fork over much of their hard earned cash. Showing stewed fruits, vanilla and spice, and with nicely balanced tannins this is the perfect red wine for these cold blustery autumn days!"

  • Great Value

"This is one of my favourite Riojas. Smooth with a good balance of rich blackcurrant and black cherry fruit and secondary characteristics of spice, vanilla and dried herbs. At £7.99 for a Gran Reserva it is an absolute steal at the moment and geat for dinner parties or traditional Sunday Roast. Perfect for Autumn!"
