Grape

Pinot Grigio

Origin
Grown in Nelson, to the west of Marlborough, on stoney loam soils with high sunshine hours and a moderating Maritime influence. The winemaking philosophy blends Old World techniques with pioneering methods now becoming commonplace in the New World.
Taste
Bursting with aromas of pear, honey, apple, spice and even a hint of cream. Hints of sweetness partner the pure fruit flavours and are complemented by clean acidity, good length and soft texture.
Enjoy
Gorgeous on its own as a fuller bodied apéritif or with Thai and Asian foods. At its best when enjoyed over the next eighteen months.

    Great alternative to expensive Alsace!

I found this a great example of New Zealand Pinot Gris with aromas of pear drops, candied apple, fresh figs and Mirabelle plums. I likened it to a rich Alsace style (similar to the 2003 vintage perhaps?) An off-dry entry leads into a textured mid-palate, with nice acidity on the sides, and the wine ends with a soft, non-bitter finish. Good concentration of fruit weight means for me this is an elegant yet full-bodied wine that works very well with Asian & lightly spiced dishes.

    Something special

This strong pinto gris is quite delightful with a lot going on. An entree of 'Goosberry Grand Central' quickly followed by a lemon zing. The complexity is long lasting on the tongue which is when the sultry, even heavy buttery / vanilla overtones hits you, very wet, yet a slighlty dry finish. The finish leaves you unclear as to what of these various sensations won the the day and therefore you quoff a little more to try again. Lovely. I am unsure as to what food you would match this to, but you know what? it's an easy drink and therefore I recommend nothing more than some salty Cashews from sainsburys. There are no down sides to this quite singular wine.

    Delicious

Dangerously drinkable! Luscious but not cloying, off dry but not sickly, and with enough acidity to balance it out and keep it refreshing. Drank a glass as an aperitif and another with curry, which it matched well. Notes of pear drops, honey, peach, with some citrus and mineral hints, and a rich nutty finish. Quite delicious.

    Superb

A lovely fresh white wine, superb with Thai food or on its own. Would be superb in the summer but last night with the log fire blazing it was wonderful too!

    Different - fabulous!

I am wary of raving about this wine, for fear its very reasonable price might get a hike, and yet.... This is a really elegant wine, very surprising for the price, with subtle fruit and soft creaminess in the middle and then a lovely smooth finish. I find the recommendation for asian/thai food to be misguided - the wine can probably take it but it would be overburdened. For such food you really need a Gewürtztraminer or a properly oaked Chsardonnay. Enjoy this wonderful Pinot Gris (so much more elegant and substantial than the majority of comparably priced Italian Pinot Grigios) with creamy mushroom pasta or a lovely white fish Med-style, with lots of oregano and lemon on the charcoal grill!

  • Thai me up, Thai me down.

"I've been looking for an excuse to say 'thai me up' for a while, and Waimea's Pinot Gris is the perfect opportunity to do so. Off-dry in style, though with enough stone and tropical fruit to give make it feel a little sweeter than it is, good acidity balances this out nicely and it's quite voluptuous without being fat or overly viscous. Works well as an aperetif, but serve it alongside Geang Massaman or Panang and you'll see why Alsatian-style wines suit asian cooking so well. The fruit and touch of sweetness are the perfect foil to gentle (and not-so gentle) spice."
