Origin
The Chapoutier family have produced wines in the Rhône Valley since 1808. Michel Chapoutier, currently in charge, has combined tradition with a dynamic, creative approach and makes some of the best wines of the region.
Taste
A superb wine with rich aromas of dark fruit, earthy minerals and spice. Soft and round on the palate with smooth tannins, rich blackberry and cherry fruit, hints of liquorice and a substantial finish.
Enjoy
This wine can be enjoyed over the next several years and will superbly partner most rich meat dishes.

    Distinctly average

This wine really didn't do it for me. I let it breathe for 3 hours but it didn't have anything special going for it, in terms of complexity, smoothness or distinctiveness. Economy class I'm afraid, in my opinion.

    Less than impressive

Rather harsh wine that needs a little time in the glass to mellow. At the discounted price it is not unreasonable value for money.

    Great little wine

This vintage is not quite as good as the 2007 vintage, nor such good value, but I haven't had a bad bottle yet. Great little Cotes du Rhone and in my opinion better than the Cécile-des-Vignes.

    Poor compared to 2007

My wife and I were very fond of the 2007 vintage - this is just not in the same class. Thin and acidic. I do hope that Majestic are not using the old supermarket trick of heavy discounting to get rid of poor vintages. Hugh Johnson is spot on when he says that the 2008s are similar to 2002s - with some honourable exceptions ... but not this one!

    Decent

Definately more drinkable a few hours after opening. This is a decent Cotes-Du-Rhone red, let down marginally by being too alcoholic at 14.5%. Please Michael Chapoutier and team, work out a way to over come the "hotter" summers we are apparently now experiencing and bring the alcohol level back to the 12-13% level. If you can find it I recommend you try Chapoutier Petit Ruche, or better still Deschant. A few pounds more but well worth the investment. Majestic purchasing team - Any chance of stocking these lines? It all seems to end up in America which is a shame.

    cooking wine (just)

IChapoutiers cheaper wines have deteriorated recently but I was given two bottles of his Hermitage which were fantastic,so decided to give this a try and bought 6 bottles. One mouthful was enough don,t think I could even cook with it.

  • "This has as much quality as the best Chapoutier reds at hundreds of pounds a bottle - the essence of the Rhône Valley in a glass."

  • "Try a taster with Chapoutier's delicious bold, herby, violet-scented 2009 Côtes du Rhône, Belleruche."
