Grape

Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

Origin
This is Kanonkop's 'second wine', similar in ethos to the second wines of the top Bordeaux estates, and is a lighter, more forward version of its top blends. Made from around 50% Pinotage, and aged for at least 12 months in French Nevers oak barriques.
Taste
The wine has a deep ruby, red colour. It shows ripe raspberries, black currant and mocha flavours on the nose and has dark chocolate and blackberry fruit on the palate. Good length with a dry finish.
Enjoy
Drink with barbecued lamb steaks.

    Fantastic value

This wine is simply great value particularly when on offer if you are a pinotage fan. The blend just makes it that much more quaffable. However it will be better with some more bottle aging. I am currently drinking the 2008 which is superb so my recent order of the 2010 will be put down for a year or more.

Staff Reviews

  • Classy...Kanonkop's excellent Bordeaux blend

"Black fruits, blackcurrants and plums waft from the glass with smoky and toasy oak aromas intermingled with earty and tobacco notes. Very warm fruit flavours, the black fruit meets some red berries in the palate with an array of spice and smoked meat flavours and a hint of minerality."

  • A distinctive and unique offering from South Africa

"This distinctive South African blend differs only from that found in Bordeaux by the addition of the Pinotage grape, 44% of which contributes to the final wine. Whilst the classic Bordeaux nose of Cassis and plum are apparent, the Pinotage adds a silky mouthfeel and some rich yet smooth red cherry notes. This is given backbone and structure on the palate from 14 months ageing in French oak barriques."
