Grape

Chardonnay

Origin
From a small St. Veran plot which forms part of Christophe Thibert and his sister Sandrine's 60-acre Burgundy estate, which includes some old-vine parcels over 85 years old. Hand harvested and subjected to minimal handling, this wine is also unfiltered.
Taste
Elegantly oaked, with citrus, peach and pineapple fruit. Hints of vanilla and toast. This is a wine with a slightly creamy body to it and an impressive intensity and length.
Enjoy
A good wine with poultry, pasta or fish in creamy sauces.

Very attractive and good value at this level. 41/2 stars really.

The white wines of the Macon region provide a good daily-drinking experience, and good value even compared with less prestigious areas or countries. So why pay quite a bit more for St-Veran? You could say it's like "basic" Macon, but more so, quite a lot more so, without being qualitatively different. Like the volume’s turned up without distorting the music. So if you like the style – you will gather I find it attractive – go for this one. And if you like it and want to go further, how about a Pouilly-Fuissé?

Staff Reviews

  • "I'm a huge fan of this Domaine, they make powerful, punchy Burgundies with chunky fruit and a well judged lick of oak. It doesn't possess the ageabilty of some of the more Northerly 'classic' Cote d'Or appellations, but it's a delight to drink now and over the next 3-5 years. I would say with fish pie, but it's an easy bedfellow for many dishes."

  • Lightly smoky nose with some real structure to this scented wine (2010 Vintage)

"Lightly smoky nose with some real structure to this scented wine. Much more energetic than the old St-Vérans. Tastes as though it will take on interest (Jancis Robinson, Jancisrobinson.com, 25th May 2012)"
