Prestige Parcels Pinot Gris 2011
New Zealand

Majestic's exclusive Prestige Parcels are one-off lots of wine from top producers, which have been obtained by our buyers at an extra special price.

Although most famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, producers in the Marlborough region have been making experimental plantings of Pinot Gris since 1990.

Aromas of pear drops, honeysuckle and melon leap from the glass. This wine is softly textured on the palate, with gentle tropical fruit flavours, rounded acidity and a hint of residual sweetness.

Food Match: Poultry Dishes with Citrus or Herbs

£10.99 or buy any two NZ wines and save 20%, making it only...

...£8.79!

Wine Matches for Savoury Pastries such as Sausage Rolls, Pork Pies & Scotch Eggs

Lets face it no picnic is complete without a mixture of savoury pastries including sausage rolls, pork pies and scotch eggs. Whilst you can make them yourselves they are widely available in local supermarkets and pretty good value. However, which wines to
match with them is a different matter altogether!

Great wine matches to this type of food are rich in style with concentrated fruits that can stand up to the flavoursome nature of these delicious snacks. For a white wine I would recommend something like the
Mâcon Cruzille 'Le Chanay' 2009 Cave de Lugny from Burgundy. This is a great example of an unoaked Chardonnay in a richer more full bodied style. Apple, white pear and zesty citrus characters on the nose and palate will stand up to the full
flavour of the savoury pastries. This wine also has a fantastic mineral streak reminiscent of the limestone rich soils of the Mâconnais which won't be overwhelmed by the pastries. At
just £8.99 a bottle when you buy two bottles as part of a mixed case of six bottles this is a great buy!

A great red wine match is a slightly richer style of Pinot Noir such as the
Wither Hills Pinot Noir 2010 from Marlborough in New Zealand. Ripe black cherry and rich plum fruits are met with hints of liquorice and a hint of savoury spice that will perfectly complement the pepper in the pork pies and sausage rolls! The silky
smooth texture and soft tannins of this wine make it a fantastic easy drinking red. Currently
just £9.99 a bottle when you buy any two New Zealand Wines as part of a mixed case of six bottles.

Perfect for Picnics: Classic Egg Mayo With a Twist & Bree and Grape Sandwiches

Picnic food is al fresco dining at its best and allows you to make the most of the beautiful British countryside. These two sandwich recipes are quick and simple but will spruce up any picnic and go fantastically with a range of wines.

Classic Egg Mayo With a Twist:
For this great classic British picnic sandwich to serve 4 you will need:
4 bread rolls (I like to use fresh crusty bread)
3 eggs
A large dollop of mayonnaise
1 Spring Onion
A handful of Rocket
Black Pepper

1-Boil the eggs in a pan with a pinch of salt for 4 minutes then leave to cool to ensure that they are fully cooked in the middle.
2-Chop into small squares and mix with a large dollop of mayonnaise. I like to add a lot of mayo but you can make them as creamy as you like! If your feeling very adventurous you can even make your own mayo.
3-Next chop the spring onion up into slices about 5mm in diameter and mix into the egg mayo mix. Add lashings of black pepper and stir gently.
4-Slice the bread rolls down the middle, line with rocket then place a good helping of the egg mayo mixture and enjoy!

Bree & Grape Sandwiches:
4 Bread Rolls (I think toasted ciabatta works brilliantly)
A large slice of Bree
A bunch of green grapes
Black pepper

This recipe is really as simple as it looks. Slice the Bree into thin slices and line the bread rolls. Then cut the grapes in half and place over the Bree. Add a pinch of black pepper and serve! I like to add a small amount of chutney to this sandwich to
spice it up a bit. Pickle and apple or cranberry both work really well!

Wine Match: I think a great White Burgundy is the perfect match for both of these recipes because the acidity cuts through the richness of the mayonnaise without overwhelming the flavour of the sandwich. The
Louis Jadot Macon Blanc Roche Blanches is a perfect example. It has lots of fresh citrus, green apple and grape fruit flavours with great acidity. These fruits matches that of the grapes and complements the Bree. Currently just £7.99
a bottle when you buy 2 bottles!

Roasted Vegetable, Feta and Chickpea salad

I love food that's minimal effort but maximum taste and this is another of my favourites. For lunch, a side dish for picnics and barbeque's or even a light dinner I think it's perfect, easily prepared in advance and just serve it up when you want it.

For 2 servings you will need:
A 300g can of chickpeas in water
2 Peppers (Red, Yellow, Orange or Green)
1 Courgette
1 Red Onion
Feta Cheese
Olive Oil
Herbs for seasoning (I recommend Thyme and Basil)

Heat your oven to 200 degrees centigrade (my oven only works in centigrade) and chop your peppers, courgette and red onion into medium sized chunks and put them into an oven proof dish. Drizzle the olive oil over the vegetables and season with the Basil
and Thyme, I would then give them a mix to ensure they are all covered.

Once the oven is heated put your vegetables in and cook them for 30-45 minutes, I like mine to be just nicely browning. Drain the chickpeas and divide between your plates, then add the roasted vegetables (either straight from the oven or cooled) cut the
feta into cubes and add on top.
I then like to top this with my favourite salad dressing or the old classic of olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette.

Wine Recommendation:
For a lovely summer dish I recommend a nice summer wine like the CUNE Rioja Rosado 2011. This rosé is packed full of summer fruits, like strawberries and raspberries, and the acidity of the wine will act as a palate cleanser with the richness
of the feta. At just £6.99 a bottle when you buy two bottles as part of a mixed case of six its a star buy!

Perfect Picnic Partners

With a great summer of celebrations right around the corner a good old fashioned picnic is the perfect way to celebrate! Al fresco dining is a great way to get outside and enjoy all the delights of Britain. You can bring many different types and varieties
of food, lots of great wines, and even a bottle of fizz for those special occasions. Below are some great food and wine matches that would brighten up any picnic:

For salads:
The perfect wine to go with leafy green salads, juicy tomatoes and cool cucumbers is one with acidity and flavour to match. The
Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2011 is a great choice, crisp lemon citrus and rich gooseberry fruits are met with refreshing acidity and herbaceous notes.
Just £7.99* a bottle!

For a lighter option the Serena Pinot Grigio 2011 Banfi oozes delicate pear and melon aromas with soft citrus notes. At
just £5.99* a bottle it is the perfect partner!

For sandwiches including Classic Egg Mayo, Bree & Grape & Coronation Chicken:

The perfect match is a light and delicate White Burgundy like the Macon-Village 'Les Pierres Blanches' 2011. Citrus and apple notes, a hint of blossom and faint traces of butter complement the creamy sauces. Currently
£6.99** a bottle!

Alternatively you could go for a slightly more aromatic style of wine such as the
Caixas Albarino. This delicate floral lemony white wine is delicious and
just £7.99**.

For savoury pastries such as sausage rolls, pork pies and scotch eggs:
Try a richer more concentrated style of wine such as the Louis Latour Pinot Noir Domaine de Valmoissine
2010. Cherries, summer berries and sweet spice are met with velvety tannins for just £8.99**
a bottle.

Alternatively try the Grifone Montepulciano D'Abruzzo. Red cherry and dark plum fruits with lashings of spice and gentle tannins for
just £4.99* a bottle! Perfect!

For cakes and all things sweet:
I love a nice glass of fizz with dessert and as so many summer desserts include strawberries and other fruits a delicious glass of pink fizz seems the perfect option! The
Chilean Undurraga Rose NV is great with delicious red cherry and watermelon flavours, and a fine but persistent mousse for
only £5.99 a bottle!

For those who want to splash out a little bit why not go for our new Montaudon Brut NV Champagne? At
just £17 a bottle it bursts with citrus and green apple fruit flavours with subtle hints of brioche and a light delicate mousse.

Oriano Nero D'Avola di Sicilia 2010
Sicily

In continuation with our Italian Tasting Week this installment of our Wine of the Week is a beauty from Sicily. Nero d'Avola is Sicily's signature red grape variety. The grape itself is named after the town of Avola in the far southwest of Sicily where it has
been growing for several hundred years.

The hilly, mountainous geography of Sicily twinned with its poor soil, intense summer heat and low rainfall provides ideal growing conditions for vines. This classic Mediterranean climate ensures that the vines are sufficiently stressed to place all their energy
into producing fantastic grapes.

An intense nose of red plums, cherries and mocha follow through on the palate. They are accompanied by lashings of black fruits such as blackberries, supple tannins and a peppery finish. This savory style of red wine is similar to that of a Shiraz and gives
the wine great complexity.

Food Match: Grilled lamb chops with thyme and rosemary.

£6.99 per Bottle Or

Oriano Grillo 2010
Sicillia
Italy

In line with our Italian themed tasting week. This week's wine of the week is a white that is a relatively unknown grape native to Sicily Grillo is one of Sicily's oldest grape varieties and is normally used in the production of the fortified wine Marsala,
and at it's best can produce full-bodied wines with lots of character.

Sicily is Italy's largest region with the largest area under vines, although it only produces 5.5 million hecolitres, which puts it in fourth place in terms of wine productions. Sicily's wine production has traditionally, and to some extent still is, heavily
controlled by the Mafia. Sicily's terrain make it ideal for growing and fully ripening grapes, with hillside vineyards that are exposed to plenty of sunlight.

A lively, fresh nose of green apple, with a hint of zesty citrus with subtle pear drop aromas. On the palate it is crisp, clean and refreshing with a playful hints of white peach, pear and camomille.

Yali Reserva Gewürztraminer 2010
Colchagua Valley, Chile

For this edition of Wine of the Week we thought that we would bring you something a little bit different. We have chosen a Chilean Gewürztraminer: a New World take on a classic European wine.

The grapes for this wine are grown in Yali's Peralillo estate in the Colchagua Valley. They are harvested at night, pressed without coming into contact to the air before being cool-fermented to maximise the fresh delicate style of the wine and concentrate the
primary fruit character.

Intensley floral on the nose this wine gives off a medley of roses, jasmine and lemon blossom which accentuate the tropical lychee fruit. These flavours materialise on the palate to give a soft fruity off-dry wine with an abundance of florality and a nice balance
between texture and acidity.

Food Match: Lightly grilled prawns or slightly spicy Thai dishes.

Summer Vegetable and Chicken Casserole

This is one of my favourite time saving summer dinners as it doesn't require too much attention to make so its perfect for those nights when there's so much else to do.

Ingredients:
Chicken Breasts
Onions
New Potatoes
Carrots
Sugar snap peas
Asparagus
Chicken stock
Crème Fraiche
Paprika (smoked not spicy)
Fresh Basil or Thyme (or both)

I prefer to start by chopping the Chicken and vegetables into smaller pieces to save time later. Take your chopped chicken and onions and fry them in some oil in a large pan (or casserole dish). I like to cook them until they are beginning to brown slightly.
Then add in your new potatoes and carrots and pour the stock over them. You want enough stock to just cover everything. Then add into your fresh herbs, paprika and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Leave this to simmer for about 10 minutes, until the potatoes and carrots have softened. Then add in your sugar snap peas and asparagus and cook for a further 5 minutes, then stir in the crème fraiche, check the seasoning and serve while piping hot.

Alternatively I also like this dish if you leave out the new potatoes and serve it with and chunk of crusty bread.

Wine match recommendation: We recommend the Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillion
to go with this dish as the Sauvignon Blanc in this blend will match the Asparagus nicely and the Semillion softens the acidity and makes this wine fruiter which will go nicely with the crème fraiche.

Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion 2008 £13.74 or buy any two Australian wines save 20% £10.99

Food and Wine Match

Now Asparagus Season is finally upon us we will be bringing you a fabulous asparagus recipe and a great wine to match every week! Today's recipe is asparagus and smoked salmon which is perfect for breakfast, brunch or a light lunch!

Asparagus and Smoked Salmon
Ingredients:
Asparagus
Ciabatta Bread
Smoked Salmon
Rocket
Black Pepper
Olive Oil
Knob of butter

1-Add a large knob of butter to a griddling pan and slowly heat.

2-Wash and clean the asparagus then gently griddle in the butter for a few minutes until the asparagus is starting to brown.

3-Cut the ciabatta bread in half down the middle and cover with a generous helping of olive oil. Sprinkle with black pepper and place under the grill for two to three minutes.

4-Remove the ciabatta from the grill and place on top of a small pile of rocket leaves. Lay a piece of smoked salmon over the top of the ciabatta and add more black pepper if desired.

5-Remove the asparagus from the griddle and lay over the smoked salmon. Pour the melted butter over the top of the asparagus and salmon and serve with a wedge of lemon.

Recommended Wine Match: Chablis 2010 Domaine Servin, Burgundy £10.99*

This delicious Chablis is full of citrus zest, green apple and white flowers. It has a pleasant streak of flinty minerality with a crisp clean finish and great length. The acidity of the wine cuts through the oiliness of the salmon but its delicate flavour
does not overpower the distinct flavour of the asparagus. All in all a great food and wine match!

* When you buy two bottles as part of a mixed case of six or more bottles.

Luis Felipe Edwards Signature Series Viognier Reserva 2011
Rapel Valley Chile

To celebrate the arrival of our fantastic new Summer Offers this Wine of the Week is the Luis Felipe Edwards Signature Series Viognier Reserva 2011. This wine is made by the largest family owned estate winery in Chile in a classic Chilean-style.

The viognier grapes used in this wine are pressed in a protective atmosphere to enhance their clean and fruity style. They then spend just two months in oak to add depth and complexity whilst still maximising their freshness.

Light and fresh yet intensely aromatic. Flavours of peach and apricot leap out on the palate followed by ripe pear aromas and a hint of florality. This wine has a refreshing acidic lift and a gentle mineral grip making it a fantastic easy drinking wine.

Food Match: A great partner for mild spicy dishes such as Cajun chicken or thai prawns in a sweet chilli sauce. Delicious!

New Zealand

This Wine of the Week is a sparkling wine to get you in the mood for all those summer celebrations. Lindauer is currently New Zealand's most exported wine and is made from grapes grown in the Hawkes Bay.

Made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes give this wine a good level of intensity. It also undergoes a champagne style secondary fermentation and maturation in the bottle, which adds a delicious yeasty character as well as fine bubbles.

This is a great summer drinking sparkling wine with plenty of ripe fruits and lovely toasty, yeasty characters showing through, followed by refreshing acidity on the palate and crisp citrus fruits.

Asparagus Season Has Arrived!

Monday 23rd April marked the beginning of the Asparagus Season and as beautiful Evesham is located right in the heart of the asparagus growing region we are celebrating all things Asparagus! Asparagus is notoriously difficult to match to wine because of
its very distinct but also very yummy flavour. However, there are a few wines which we think would be great with it and below are a few of our suggestions!

For lightly griddled, pan fried or asparagus broth:
We recommend Sauvignon Blanc because its herbaceous nettly style complements and echoes the flavour of asparagus. Vavasour New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a great match to this style of dish and very affordable at just £8.99** or if you prefer a softer style
of sauvignon the Dourthe Reserve from Bordeaux (£6.49*).

For asparagus with seafood such as smoked salmon:
We recommend a medium weight style of white Burgundy such as the Chablis Servin (£10.99*) because the acidity can stand up to the oiliness of the salmon whilst the flavour of the dish is not overwhelmed by the delicate flavour of the wine. Another great match
is the Cave de Turckheim Pinot Gris (£8.49*) because its rich and well-balanced style partners the dish without the distraction of too much aroma.

For asparagus with melted butter, hollandaise or creamy sauces:
We recommend a slightly richer style of wine such as an oaked Californian chardonnay which will echo the rich and creamy style of the sauce. The Sonoma-Cutrer 2009 Chardonnay (£9.99*) is a perfect example. If you are not a fan of heavy chardonnays a Sauvignon
Semillon blend such as the Cape Mentelle (£10.99**) from Margaret river is a good match as the herbaceous sauvignon matches the asparagus whilst the semillon complements the sauce.

For any other asparagus dishes:
We recommend a nice bottle of fizz because champagne (or champagne-style) sparkling wines have great acidity which will stand up to the flavour of the asparagus. The creamier brioche tones will match any butter or sauces you use. The Lindauer Brut NV from new
Zealand (£7.99) is a fabulous example of such a sparkling wine whilst for those who want to treat yourselves we recommend the Nicholas Feuillatte NV Champagne (£18.00) because of its fresh and fruity style!

*When you buy two bottles as part of a mixed case of six bottles.
** When you buy any two New Zealand, Chilean, Australian, Italian or Beajolais wines as part of a mixed case of six bottles.

Serena Pinot Grigio Rosato 2011, Banfi Italy £5.99**

Villa Maria Private Bin Rose 2011, Marlborough New Zealand £6.99**

As well as being St Georges Day Monday 23rd April also marks the beginning of the
Asparagus Season! And here in Evesham we are right in the heart of the Asparagus growing region.

Asparagus is a notoriously tricky thing to match wine to because of its very distinct (and rather yummy) flavour. However, there are a few great wines that go especially well with asparagus and a multitude of different asparagus recipes out there. So to
celebrate this wonderful season over the next couple of weeks we will have a selection of interesting wines open on our tasting counter that make the perfect match! We will also be offering up a few food and wine matching recipes including that all important
key ingredient: asparagus!

We will regularly be updating our webpage and twitter account @majesticevesham over the next couple of weeks with all things asparagus related so watch this space!

St George's Day

Monday 23rd April is Saint George's Day and what better way to celebrate all things English than with some information about English wines!

'What did the Romans ever do for us?' is a common phrase. The answer is a little more complex though. It has long been presumed that they introduced winemaking to England when they invaded. However archaeologists has found evidence that vitis vinifera
(vines) have been growing here since the prehistoric era. This means the Roman's certainly did not introduce vines to Britain, whether they were the first ones to start producing wine here is another matter altogether.

Anyhow the important thing is that vines have been growing in England for quite some time and today (leap forward a few thousand years) we produce some rather good ones. Below are a few of our favourites:

Nyetimber Classic Cuvee 2004 England. The Nyetimber vineyards are located in West Sussex and since 1988 have been producing some fabulous sparkling wines that rival (and often beat in blind tasting tests) the big names from the Champagne
region! A nose of citrus fruit, brioche and shortbread are met on the palate by a finely pearled mousse which is soft but persistent. The perfect party wine! £29.99 a bottle or
buy 2 bottles save £10 so only £24.99 a bottle!

Chapel Down Bacchus 2010 England. The Chapel Down winery is located in Tenterden in Kent and highlights the fantastic potential of English wines! Bacchus is the fourth most widely planted grape variety in England as well as being Latin for
the Classical Roman God of wine. This wine oozes complex aromas of petals, herbs and lychee. On the palate crisp green apple, pears and white pepper are met with well balanced acidity and a fresh finish. Currently just £9.99 a bottle!

Chapel Down 'The Union Red' 2010 England. This delicious red wine is a blend of Rondo, Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir Precoce. A fabulous alternative the Beajolais or light Pinot Noirs this red wine is soft and youthful with notes of plum, cherries
and liquorice. The tannins are gentle and well integrated making an easy drinking delicate wine. Currently
just £11.99 a bottle!

Here at Majestic Wine Evesham we believe that English wines are something a little bit special and would love to hear what you think about them!

An A to Z of Wine: J is for Jadot

On our A to Z of wine the next stop is J: a tricky letter if I do say so myself so here at Majestic Wine Evesham we thought we would write a little on the wines of
Louis Jadot.

Louis Jadot is a merchant grower based in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. He deals exclusively with Burgundian wines and owns 122 acres of vineyards in the
Côte d'Or and 86 acres of vineyards in Beajolais. The company was founded in 1859 by Louis Jadot but today is owned by the Kopf family and has been since 1985.

The key to the success of Jadot wines is to produce negociant wines made from both red and white grapes of reliable quality that are bought in. The wines are famed for their class and distinction, known especially for their expression of terroir. The best
wines produced by Louis Jadot are fabulous expressions of Puligny-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne
and Chevalier-Montrachet.

Majestic wine stock a good number of terrific Louis Jadot wines. Below are two of my particular favourites:

Mâcon Village 'Les Roches Blanches' 2010 Louis Jadot. The Chardonnay grapes used to make this delicious wine are sourced in Southern Burgundy southwest of Mâcon from superior quality vineyards surrounding the village of Loché. Fresh, clean
and fruity in style with lemon citrus, crisp green apple and pear flavours. The finish is delicate with subtle streaks of minerality. £9.99 a bottle or
buy two bottles save £2 so only £8.99 a bottle!
The perfect match for delicate white fish dishes.

Beaune 1er Cru Rouge 2008 Louis Jadot. This fantastic Red Burgundy is made from Pinot Noir grapes sourced from premiere cru vineyard sites which are lovingly matured for 16 months in French barriques. A great structured by soft and fruity
wine displaying hints of violets, red cherries and soft redcurrant fruits. The tannins are soft and rounded. £19.99 a bottle or
buy two bottles save £4 so only £17.99 a bottle! This wine can be aged over the next five years and goes well with roasted duck.

This year we are celebrating Malbec World Day on April the 17th and in honour of this occasion we have a fantastic selection of Malbecs open to taste on our tasting counter.

Malbec World Day commemmorates the day in 1853 when the Argentinian Presidential candidate Domingo Faustino Sarmiento began his mission to transform the Wine Industry in Argentina. One of the wines he selected to do this with was Malbec. Sarmiento went on
to become President just as Malbec went on to become Argentina's best known grape varietal.

Here in majestic Evesham we love Malbec and fully embrace Malbec World Day. We especially enjoy the rich, fruity style of many Argentinian Malbecs and their spicy robustness goes perfectly with those fabulous BBQ's us Brits love to have!

We will have a range of Malbecs open all weekend from Friday 13th April untill Monday 16th April for you to taste! Check out our webpage tasting counter for more details!

Vinalba Malbec Reserva
2010
Mendoza Argentina

In celebration of Malbec World Day (17th of April) our wine of the week is of course a Malbec. From the largest wine producing region in Argentina (Mendoza, which produces 70% of Argentinian wines) this Malbec Reserva is Vinalba's flagship wine. This wine
is made from grapes grown at different altitudes, at the foot of the Andes, in order to achieve an ideal balance between tannin and acidity.

On the nose a rich array of dark fruit aromas, smoke and a hint of spice can be detected. These materialise on the palate where this robust Malbec oozes rich blackberry and plum fruit flavours. Complemented by sweet cinnamon spice, smokey tones and mocha
it is a complex and deep wine with a full body, smooth tannins and a decent length.

Recognised for its fantastic quality the Vinalba Reserva won a Bronze Decanter World Wine Award. We certainly think it deserves it!

Food Match: This wine is the perfect match for hearty red meat dishes such as peppered steaks or roasted lamb.

Contesa Pecorino
Colline Pescaresi Italy
2011

As we are approaching the Summer we thought it fitting to have an ideal Summer drinking wine as our wine of the week. Most people know the name Pecorino because of the cheese, this grape variety shares the same name. The bunches of Pecorino grapes are very
triangular, which is reminiscent of a sheep's head.

The wines comes from the Eastern coast of central Italy in the Abruzzo region
where the climate is influenced by the Mediterranean. This means that the summers are hot and dry. Colline is the Italian word for hills and is used to indicate wines that have been grown on the slopes. The area of Pescara is a hilly Provence and has
its own micro-climate making it ideal for grape growing.

The nose of this wine is dominated by citrus fruits with hints of orange blossom. The palate is soft with a clean finish and complex minerality.

Food match: Why not try it with Pecorino cheese

£9.99 or buy 2 save £4

Fine Wine Friday

Condrieu 2010 E. Guigal

Condrieu is famed for its rich exotic perfumed wines produced from the Viognier grape variety. Guigal was one of the pioneers of the Condrieu resurgence to impart oak into the wine to add body and subtle nuances of flavour.

On the Palate this delicious Rhone wine oozes pear, sweet peaches and pineapple fruit flavours. Delicately dry in style with lots of flavour, a smooth palate and a rich full texture. Lashings of vanilla and cinnamon spice add depth and complexity to this
fantastic fine wine. The finish is long and elegant: a sign of quality.

Condrieu should be drunk young to make the most of its rich aromatic style. It goes perfectly with creamy dishes including poultry and lightly spiced curries or seafood dishes like soft shell crab.

Goldwater Sauvignon Blanc 2010
New Zealand

To celebrate our Easter Specials Tasting Week, this Wine of the Week is featured in our flyer and is a corking deal. From the
Wairau Valley in Marlborough, this brilliant Sauvignon Blanc is cultivated using
sustainable viticulture and strict selection to ensure quality.

The grapes for this wine are 100% Sauvignon Blanc ensuring a fresh, crisp and refreshing wine. A small amount of lees ageing imparts the wine with quality adding texture and body.

Pale lemon green in the glass, the nose of this wine is full of gooseberry, elderflower and freshly cut grass aromas. The palate follows on from the nose adding a touch of raspberry leaf, lemon zest and herbaceous flavours. A streak of minerality similar to
that of Sancerre lingers on the finish highlighting the quality and balance of this delicious wine.

An A to Z of Wine: I is for Ice Wine

For this installment of our A to Z I thought I would share with you one of my experiences from working a vintage in Germany. Ice wine, or as it is known as in
German Eiswein, is a form of desert wine that is made by picking the grapes when they are frozen. Eiswein is relatively rare, as not all wineries make Eiswein every year, as it involves a lot of risks. For example, animals may eat the grapes
before they are picked or it might not freeze until early the following year. Although Eiswein has been made more regularly in the top wineries since 1980s.

It was late in November 2010 when I took part in an Eiswein pick in the beautiful
Mosel valley. It had been freezing for 3 or 4 days preceding picking, which is a necessity to ensure that the grapes had full frozen. I was summoned from my bed at 5am, as the grapes have to be picked before the dawn again to ensure they are
full frozen when pressed, so wrapped in 4 layers of clothing (basically everything I could find to put on) I headed down to the vineyard with everyone else.

We were only picking two small vineyards thankfully, but the work was cold enough. The outside temperature was -8.5 degrees centigrade. I was picking with a team of about 19 other people, which made the work quicker, although light was an issue as the portable
flood lights didn't reach to the far end of the vineyard. The work was over quickly, thankfully, although it was made easier by the consumption of white Glühwein to keep us warm.

Staff recommendations: We don't stock Eiswein at Majestic, but we do have some great desert wines.
Torres Floralis Moscatel is a great choice from Spain with delicious honey and floral notes of orange blossom and Turkish delight. Would go perfectly with crème caramel, fruit puddings or even on it's own after a good meal.
£7.99 when you buy two or more as part of a mix of 6.

An A to Z of Wine: H is for Hermitage!

This installment of an A to Z of wine focuses upon the letter H and the most famous Northern Rhône appellation
Hermitage. Hermitage produces relatively small quantities of long lasting red wines and even fewer full bodied white wines. The appellation itself is roughly the size of a small estate in Bordeaux but do not be fooled, these rich and fruity
wines are of exceptional quality and once commanded prices higher than some of the first growth Bordeaux estates!

Red Hermitage is made entirely from the red Syrah grape variety, although small quantities of the white varieties
Marsanne and Rousanne can be added to the blend.
White Hermitage is made from a blend of Marsanne and Rousanne making them robust and aromatic in style with floral characteristics.

Crozes-Hermitage is by contrast the largest appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley. The grape varieties used are the same as those in hermitage. However, the best reds produced tend to be a little softer and fruiter as the soils are a
little richer and spend less time ageing in oak barrels. The wines of Crozes-Hermitage tend to be more affordable than those of Hermitage but still make for some fantastic drinking! They go excellently with hearty red meat dishes such as barbecued meats and
stews.

Staff Recommendation: Crozes Hermitage 'Les Jalets' 2007 Jaboulet. Like many Crozes-Hermitages this delicious wine is made from 100% Syrah grapes cultivated in a six hectare vineyard. The soils are stony and lie above
what was once a glacial plain representing something similar to the 'pudding stones' of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Aromas of red cherries, redcurrants, blackberries and blueberries can be detected on the nose. These materialise on the palate along with delicious
flavours of white pepper and cinnamon spice. A long and smooth finish with rounded tannins and delicate hints of wild mushrooms and liquorice notes make this wine elegant yet complex. Priced at
just £13.99 a bottle this beautiful Rhône wine would be my first choice to take to any dinner party!

An A to Z of Wine: G is for Grenache!

An A to Z of Wine: G is for Grenache!

Now on G in our A to Z of wine we have chosen Grenache. Dispersed all over the Western Mediterranean this rich, fruity red often has candied jammy flavours and is frequently used in blends. In France Grenache is found mainly in the
Languedoc-Roussillon blended with Carignan, Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvedre. However it is also used in the
Rhone Valley in the famous Chateauneuf du Pape and
Gigondas wines.

In Spain Grenache is known as Garnacha and is found in its most common and noblest form as dark berries with light skins. Often blended with
Tempranillo, Garnacha forms the basis for many of the Spanish wines of
Rioja, Navarra, and Priorat. This style of big and fruity red wine is perfect for hearty meat dishes such as flame-grilled rib-eye steaks, and of course meat based tapas dishes like chorizo.

Staff Recommendation: In celebration of our easter promotion 'Buy any 2 or more Spanish Wines save 20%'
this weeks staff choice buy is the 'El Chaparral de Vega Sindoa' Old Vine Garnacha 2009. This fabulous Garnacha from the Navarra region is made from grapes on traditional bush-trained vines aged between 70 and 100 years old. These
produce very low yielding but high quality grapes with good acidity and balance. Beautifully structured this wine displays intense blackberry and raspberry fruit aromas. Ample tannins add texture and structure and delicious dark chocolate and mocha flavours
give this wine depth and a lingering finish. This full bodied Garnacha is a beautiful and complex wine perfect for those who enjoy fruity reds.Currently £9.99 or
buy two bottles save 20% so only £7.99 a bottle!

If this wine is not your style or you want to explore the world of Grenache/Garnacha more then why not take advantage of our
20% off Spanish Wines deal or venture into the realms of Rhone Valley and Southern French reds and see what takes your fancy!

M. Chapoutier Belleruche 2010
Côtes du Rhône

To celebrate the arrival of our Easter Offers, this Wine of the Week is featured on the front cover of our flyer and is a corking deal. The Chapoutier family have been planting vines in the Rhône Valley since 1808 combining tradition with a
dynamic creative approach to produce some truly excellent wines.

The grapes used in this wine are a traditional Rhône Valley blend of Grenache and
Syrah. The Grenache grapes add a rich array of dark fruit flavours to the blend whilst the Syrah gives body, texture and spice. All in all these varieties compliment each other to produce a well balanced food wine.

Rich dark fruit aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum can be detected on the nose. These materialise on the palate accompanied by earthy minerals and spice. Soft and round with smooth tannins this fabulous wine has subtle hints of liquorice and a substantial

An A to Z of Wines: F is for Furmint

Furmint is described using all the f's as fine, fiery and flavoursome! This white grape variety is predominantly grown in
Hungary, just over the border from Tokaji. The name Furmint comes from the Hungarian word
'froment' which refers to the wheaten colour of the wine.

Furmint grapes are partial to noble rot which concentrates the sugars in the grapes making the wine sweeter. This is one of the reasons that Furmint is the principal grape variety used in the famous Tokaji dessert wine.
However, Furmint benefits from having high natural acidity which balances the wine making it more flavoursome with great ageing potential. Furmint goes particularly well with strong creamy cheeses and rich poultry dishes. Or, as a compromise, a poultry dish
with a creamy cheese sauce would be perfect!

Staff Recommendation: Royal Tokaji 2009 Dry Furmint. This excellent dry white wine is rich and aromatic with honey and juicy stone fruit aromas. On the palate delicious apricot and peach fruit flavours are accomapnied
by strong acidity, and a fresh crisp bite. A slight minerality adds complexity accenting the well rounded finish of the wine. Currently £9.99 a bottle or
buy two bottles save £3 so only £8.49 a bottle!

This fantastic Furmint is not your run-of-the-mill everyday white wine so if your up for a challenge or are interested in experimenting with different varieties and styles then why not give it a go and see what you think?

An A to Z of Wine: E is for En Primeur

In our A to Z of wine we found E a little tricky so thought that this would be a great opportunity to let all our customers in Evesham know about
En Primeur wine, what it is, what it costs, and how you get your hands on it! So here is a brief introduction to the delights on En Primeur and why it might be the perfect thing for you....

'En Primeur' is a wine trade term for wine which is sold for future use before it is bottled. It often refers to classed growths of French Bordeaux wines and indeed this is traditionally where En Primeur wine began. However today many different wines from
all over the world can be bought En Primeur.

Cask samples of wine are show in the Spring, so right around this time, and often in relatively small quantities. Experts assess the quality of the vintage and set an opening price. The consumer (i.e. you) pays the opening price for this early wine then
waits up to two years for the wine to be bottled, shipped and delivered. The benefit in buying En Primeur wine is that you not only secure high quality sought after wines for yourself, but you also pay less for them because you get in early. For those with
a strong wine-collecting instinct this type of purchase is a great way to secure some fantastic wines.

Majestic Wine have teamed up with Lay and Wheeler, an En Primeur specialist and offer a spectacular

Well here we are on the fourth letter of the alphabet already. Today D is for Dolcetto!

Dolcetto is an early ripening red grape variety that is grown predominantly in the Northwest Italian region of
Piemonte. The wines produced are soft, fruity and well rounded with fragrant flavours and hints of liquorice and almond spice. They can be aged but drink best at around two to three years old. The better quality wines that use the Dolcetto
grape are Dolcetto d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Ovada
which tend to be made from grapes grown on white marl soils. These can be aged for five or more years. Dolcetto is perfect when paired with cured meats such as proscutio, pancetta and salami as well as traditional Italian dishes such as pizza!

Staff Recommendation: Dolcetto d'Alba 2010 De Forville is a delicious soft and fruity wine. Bright ruby in colour with expressive notes of dark cherries, raspberry and redcurrants. On the palate it oozes rich dark
cherry flavours with subtle hints of liquorice and a fresh lengthy finish. This medium bodied wine is relatively low in acidity, especially for an Italian wine, and provides easy drinking. Always a crowd pleaser this wine is certainly a staff recommendation.
Currently priced at £9.99 a bottle. Or buy two bottles save £3! So only £8.49 a bottle!

Here at Majestic Evesham we think this wine is simply delicious. Let us know what you think on twitter @majesticevesham

Today is C for Chablis!

Chablis is grown in the most northern vineyards of Burgundy in North East France. Like all fine white Burgundy it is produced from
Chardonnay grapes. The Chablis appellation is split into four main ranks: at the top are the seven named
Grand Cru vineyards. Next come the fourty Premier Crus, followed by
"Chablis" being the most common and finally Petit Chablis at the bottom. Chablis is characteristically dry with steely minerarlity, citrus fruits and good acidity. This is a direct result of the Terrior as Chablis lies on a
Kimmeridgian clay soil (a mixture of limestone and clay) containing many fossilised oyster shells. Chablis is the one fine wine in which Chardonnay is not necessarily given contact with oak. However some excellent Chablis are produced through
oak barrel maturation such as the William Fevre Wines. Chablis is delicious when served with delicated white fish, sea food or poltary dishes. It also makes an excellent acommpaniment to green leafy salads and canapes such as smoked salmon.

Staff Reccomendation: Chablis Vocoret 2010 is a classic example of one of the most iconic styles of wine. Made with grapes sourced from all over the Chablis appellation, this delicious wine has steely,
mineral aromas. With a palate of stony fruits, grapefruits, lemons and a racy citrus finish this is certainly a wine not to be missed. A fantastic village wine this Chablis is meant to be drank young whilst it is crisp and fresh. Currently just £11.99 a bottle
or £10.99 a bottle when you buy two or more as part of a mix of six!

This style of wine is elegant and refreshing with delicate flavours and therefore is always a crowd pleaser. Feel free to let us know which your favourite Chablis are on Twitter @majesticevesham

Next on our list is B and what better B than Barolo!

Often known as 'The Wine of Kings, the King of Wines' as traditionally the kings of Turin and the ruling house of Savoy cultivated vines and drank their wine in and around the town of Barolo in Northwest Italy. Barolo is made from the
Nebbiolo grape variety which produces a thick, rich concentrated wine. However all good quality Barolos should be a pale Ruby colour (uncharacteristic of the grape variety) with a complex array of flavour characteristics including plums, blackberries,
liquorice, tar, and if the producers are lucky truffles. To counteract these full on flavours Barolos tend to be rather tannic with a good glow of alcohol making them hearty reds. Like many wines Barolos are best served with the food from their region. Rich
tomato based dishes and hard cheeses go perfectly with this full bodied red so bearing this in mind pasta dishes are a great option! Otherwise I suggest drinking Barolo with rich red meats such as lamb or steak.

Staff Recommendation: The Barolo Milani 2007 Rocca is a fabulous example of a Barolo. Lovingly aged in oak barrels for 24 months this wine is then bottled and aged for a further 12 months to give it a softer smooth
texture. On the nose this wine oozes complexity with aromas of rose petals and pencil lead accompanying the lashings of plum and black cherry flavours. On the palate these fruit flavours are ripe and rich giving a full weighty feel in the mouth followed by
good tannins and length. Priced at £15.99 a bottle or buy two bottles save £6
so only £12.99 a bottle!

This rich and ripe Barolo exudes dark fruit flavours and is a fantastic wine for lovers of hearty reds. Why not give Barolo a try and see if it truly is the wine of Kings?!

Hello there to all you wine fans! Whether you like your delicate Pinot Grigio or your big Ozzie Shiraz I believe that there is a wine variety or style out there to suit everybody. Bearing this in mind, here at Majestic Wine Evesham we thought it would be
a great idea to do an A to Z of Wines to explore what is out there and (hopefully) we will fine something that will appeal to everyone!

First on our list is A so why not kick things off with Albarino. This is a particularly distinctive Spanish grape variety which is highly aromatic in nature with rich peach, apricot and floral tones. It is generally grown in
Galicia and the North of Portugal's Vinho Verde
region. Albarino is a particular favourite of mine as it is slightly more aromatic than your classic French Viogniers. Similarly it can be aged in oak barrels to add a gentle hint of toasty vanilla. If you are a fan of Viognier then it might be worth considering
trying Albarino as it might become your new favourite wine. Due to its good balance of acidity, alcohol and florality Albarino goes particularly well with seafood such as delicate white fish, calamare, and seafood paella dishes.

Staff recommendation: The Martin Codax Albarino 2010 is produced in Rias Baixas in Northwest Spain. This light and refreshing wine is full of ripe peach and apricot flavours. A hint of fresh herbs, honey and floral
blossom can be detected on the palate giving a good rounded finish. Slightly off-dry in style this wine is absolutely delicious and must be tried with lightly grilled lobster. Currently
only £9.99 when you buy two or more bottles this is a chance not to be missed!

Thats all for this installment of An A to Z of Wine. If Albarino sounds like something you might like then why not buy a bottle and see if its for you. Otherwise keep your eyes peeled for our next letter: B!

Vinalba Malbec Touriga Nacional Reserva 2009
Mendoza, Argentina

As it is our Argentina tasting week this weeks wine of the week is blend of Argentina's signature grape, Malbec, and Portugal's signature grape, Touriga Nacional. Traditionally used it Port Touriga Nacional is slowly being used in more red wines. Grown in
the foothills of the Andes it gives this wine a dark hue and an earthy nose.

70% of all wine produced in Argentina comes from the Mendoza region, and with 160,000 hectares of vines the Mendoza is arguably the largest wine making region in the world. By planting vines at high altitude the annual temperature is lower making it possible
to grow grapes in this area. Desert like conditions are also a problem for wine makers here, but this is over come by the use of flood irrigation and the snow melting running off the Andes.

With violets, mulberry and cherry mixing with a hint of chocolate, this wine has a powerful yet elegant nose. Leading on to a complex palate with blackcurrant and plum dominating and hints of toast and smoke adding to the rich, long finish.

Food match: A rich, spicy casserole or a chargrilled steak

£10.99 or buy 2 and save £4

Composite Sauvignon Blanc 2009
Marlborough
New Zealand

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is one of our most popular types of wine and this one is a slight twist on a constant favourite. Being lees aged for five months has given this Sauvignon Blanc more texture and depth.

Marlborough has become the most famous wine growing region in New Zealand. Located in the North East of the South Island it is the warmest area in the South Island and often has the most hours of sunlight compared to the rest of the island. Also 2009 was
a great vintage for all areas in New Zealand.

Longer ageing has added extra depth to this Sauvignon Blanc. Tropical fruits, like grapefruit, still dominate the nose but with savoury notes coming through as well.
A slightly more complex palate is rounded off with a refreshing citrus finish.

Food match: Warm goat's cheese tart with a green salad and a lemon vinaigrette.

Cabernet Franc
South Africa

We've chosen this wine of the week as part of our South Africa themed tasting week, it is also new to our range. Cabernet Franc is the lesser known Cabernet varietal, which typically makes light to medium bodied wines which are more dominated by fresher fruit
characteristics than the better known Cabernet Sauvignon.

This wine is from the Coastal region of South Africa where the climate is perfect for grape growing as it has plenty of rainfall in the winter. Summers in this region can be extremely hot, but these high temperatures are moderated by the “Cape Doctor” wind,
which reduces the humidity and the chances of some vine diseases.

Well concentrated red fruits dominate the nose with hints of sweet spices and a smoky oak influence. The smooth palate follows on from the nose with a touch of minerality, a light body and a lingering finish.

Food match: Lamb shanks in a redcurrant gravy

£9.99 or 20% off South Africa

£7.99

Petit Chablis Séguinot-Bordet
Burgundy
2010

The district of Chablis is in the northern-most point of Burgundy, where viticulture is at it's most extreme. This is a source of constant worry and frequent upset for all producers,, but when everything comes together some of the most fantastic chardonnay
in the world is produced here. The Chablis appellation comprises of four ranks of which Petit Chablis is the lowest, however this is by no means a bad thing...

The best and most expensive Chablis classically has an aggressively dry, steely character and very high acidity that needs a few years bottle age to mellow. Petit Chablis, however, despite not carrying the same high reputation, is much more approachable at
a young age, and due to it's lesser popularity, much more affordable.

An inviting nose of lively citrus fruits, with just a touch of white blossom. The palate is light and fresh, with mouth-watering acidity that is apparent but not drying, and a firm, lingering finish.

Food match: Steamed white fish and fresh vegetables.

Alamos Malbec 2010
Argentina

To celebrate the arrival of our Spring Offers, this Wine of the Week is featured on the front cover of our flyer and is a corking deal. Planted across almost all regions of Argentina, malbec is their most important serious grape variety and is becoming increasingly
popular across the globe.

The grapes for this wine are grown in Mendoza, which is the biggest and most important wine-making appellation in Argentina due to its ideal climatic conditions. A continental climate but with no extremes of temperature, water is in ample supply from the upper
glaciers and mountain rivers.

Bright ruby-purple in the glass, the nose of this wine is full of sweet raisened fruits and lots of blackberries. The palate follows on from the nose with well integrated tannins that give good grip but with a soft finish. Can drink now or keep in cellar conditions
for up to 5 years for the body and tannins to soften even more.

Argento Pinot Grigio 2010
Mendoza
Argentina

Most people think of Malbec when it comes to wine from Argentina, so we thought we would choose something a little different. Commonly an Italian grape variety this pinot Grigio comes from the Mendoza region which is the most important and largest wine producing
region within Argentina, over 75% of Argentinian wine is produced within this region.

Located in the west of Argentina Mendoza boarders Chile and the Andes mountain range. These mountains protect the vineyards from the rain coming in from the west so irrigation is regularly used in the area. The vineyards are planted between 600 and 1,100m
in altitude because exposure to the sun is greater at that level. The altitude also has that added bonus of having a moderating affect on the temperature.

A nose full of tropical fruits with hints of floral notes, followed by a light clean palate with a bright and refreshing finish.

Saint Vincent – Patron Saint of Wine

22nd January

Saint Vincent of Saragossa is honored every every year on the 22nd of January as the patron saint of wine. Originally a Christian Martyr in Spain legend has it that while traveling one day Saint Vincent stopped to talk to some workers in a vineyard and his
donkey nibbled on the vines. That year those vines produced the best crop, from this pruning was discovered. Now according to tradition in some areas pruning does not start until after the feast of Saint Vincent.
So here is a selection of Spanish wines to honor Saint Vincent

Gran Vendema (2008) Rioja Crianza £5.99*

Marqués de la Concordia (2006) Rioja Reserva £7.99*

Martin Codax (2010) Albariňo £9.99*
This delicate white wine has hints of spices and sweets fruits on the nose with a refreshing palate of stone fruits with a slight hint of honey and a floral finish.

Vitis Vinifera (grape vines) were first brought over to Chile by the Spanish in the 16th century, however the French have had a far greater impact on the Chiliean wine industry. Originally a not very well known Bordeaux grape variety, Carmenére has come
into its own as a Chilean varietal.

The Cachapoal Valley is located in central Chile close to the Andes which means vineyards here have the advantage of natural irrigation running off the moutain range. Hot dry summers result in very healthy grapes come harvest time.

On the nose a combination of ripe dark stone fruits and touches of coffee and smoke. The palate is full and soft with firm but smooth tannins and good length.

Food Match: Ideal with grilled red meat

Prosecco La Marca Treviso
Extra Dry Non-Vintage

In getting ready to celebrate new year's properly this week we've chosen a sparkling wine as our wine of the week. In recent years there have been changes to the laws regarding the production of Prosecco. New legislation introduced in Italy in 2009 included
tighter restrictions on use of the name Prosecco. Now only wine grown in the designated region can carry the name.

Made from the grape variety of the same name there are a few still Prosecco wines, but like this one they are mostly sparkling. Grown in the mountainous north east of Italy where the summers are hot, followed by harsh winters, this wine undergoes cool fermentation
so its fresh qualities are maintained on the nose and palate.
The term “extra dry” can be misleading as this is actually a slightly off dry sparkling wine.

Pale in colour, the nose is youthful with citrus fruits, tropical hints of pineapple and a light perfume. The palate follows on from the nose, with a refreshing spritz.

Food match: Ideal as an apéritif with canapés as the party begins

Located in the Touraine district of the Loire valley, Vouvray is one of the more important appellations in this region. Wine has been made in this area since the middle ages by monks, but it wasn't until 1936 that Vouvray earned an identity of its own.

Most vineyards in this region typically have an idyllic southern aspect which is sheltered. The soil is clay with a topsoil of gravel. Vouvray is usually harvested late to ensure the grapes are fully ripened. Chenin Blanc is the main grape used in this region,
the other area famous for using Chenin Blanc is South Africa.

This wine has tropical fruits on the nose with a slight perfumed quality.
On the palate it has a rich honeyed character finishing off with refreshing but balanced acidity.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Antiques
Rhône 2009

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most important appellations in Southern France. The wines from this region can be made from up to 13 types of grape. This wine, however, uses the classic blend of Grenache, Mourvédre and Syrah. The regulations for this appellation
mean that only fully ripe grapes at their healthiest can be used.

The climate in the Southern Rhône region is close to that of Mediterrean. The vineyards in this area typically are flat and known for being covered in large pebbles which store heat and aids the ripening process.

This wine is deep ruby with an intense nose of dark ripe fruits and touches of black pepper. The palate is rich and textured with flavours following on from the nose. The finish is long and warming, perfect for the festive season.

Fairleigh Estate Riesling 2010
Marlborough
New Zealand

Fairleigh Estate is produced by the Wither Hills winery exclusively for Majestic. The Wither Hills philosophy 'created in the vineyard' is founded on the belief that fine wines are created from exceptional vineyards, and they take great care in carefully selecting
only the best vineyard sites and viticultural methods to produce exceptional wines of all varieties.

Today Marlborough is recognised as one of the premium wine regions of the world. Situated in the north-eastern corner of New Zealand's South Island, the climate is an ideal balance of long sunshine hours and unique terroir.

Pale in colour, the nose is powerful with vibrant citrus fruits and pear. The palate follows on from the nose with added hints of ginger and white blossom. The wine is light and clean with a slight off-dry finish and well balanced acidity.

We at Majestic are charitable folk, and like to do what we can to help out worthy causes. To do this as effectively as possible, we choose to create a partnership with one charity each year, which we believe is much more effective than distributing untold
numbers of bottles here and there.

Each year, we are given a shortlist of charities and vote for the one we most want to support. This ensures that by working together as a team, all of our charitable acts and donations will combine to make a much bigger impact in raising money for one charity.
For instance, our 2011 partnership with Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres raised over £16000* via in-store collection tins alone, and that's not including various money raising events such as sky-dives, marathons and raffles.

Cairanne 2010 Vidal-Fluery
Côtes du Rhône

This wine of the week links in with our Burgundy and Rhône tasting week. It is a produce from the oldest continually operated winery in the Rhône valley. Wines from Southern Rhône account for 95 per cent of all wines produced in the region.

The climatic conditions of this region are very similar to those of the Mediterranean. This means, however that the vineyards are very susceptible to sudden violent storms. The Mistral current blows in a spice laden breeze and the herbal scrub lands with
olive groves add even more of a Mediterranean feel to the area. The soil in the area has a higher limestone content than the north of the valley with a topsoil that has stony deposits.

Ruby pink in colour, the bright red fruits on the nose follow through to the pallet, giving it good length with robust tannins and a peppery finish.

Food match: drink with barbecued lamb chops or a charry magret de canard.

Yali Reserva Gewurztraminer 2010
Colchagua Valley
Chile

Viña Ventisquero are a winery that take great care and pride in their work producing wines in the most environmentally friendly way possibly. The Yali range focuses (& excels) in producing approachable, fresh and vibrant wines in all styles.

The climate of Chile is near perfect for grape growing as the proximity to the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, coupled with very dry summers, produces exceptionally healthy fruit.

A light, fresh example of a classically pungent and aromatic grape variety Gewurztraminer. The nose is full of attractive citrus fruits with a touch of blossom and jasmine. On the palate the wine is very light, with a clean and refreshing finish. A great
introduction to gently ease you in to this powerful & distinctive grape variety.

Côtes du Rhône 'Les Vignes Rousses' 2009
Jean-Luc Colombo
France

Jean-Luc Colombo is a famed consultant oenologist from the Cornas region of northern Rhone. This red from the generic appellation of Côtes du Rhône is produced in an approachable style whilst maintaining the depth and concentration that Rhône wines are famed
for.

The Southern Rhône climate is almost mediterranean, with wet winters and hot dry summers. This wine consists of the classic blend of grapes found in the Southern Rhône; Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre.

Bright purple in colour, the nose consists of garrique herbs and ripe, lucious red fruits. The palate is rich and well structured, with a soft mouthfeel and flavours carrying on from the palate.

Reales Vinedos Vendimia Seleccionada 2006
Manchuela
Spain

The inspiration for this Wine of the Week comes from seeing the online rave customer reviews (two 5 stars and a 4), all saying what great value for money this wine is and how it stands up well to more expensive alternatives. This red comes from Spain's newest
DO region Manchuela, a region showing great potential once the right investment comes along. Watch this space!

A decent vintage with most wines classed as good-very good. The Manchuela region is on the eastern side of Castilla-La Mancha, an area which experiences the most extreme Spanish climate, with gruelling summers and long freezing winters.

Bright in colour with a nose of sweet jammy fruits and hints of warm spices. Notes of cranberry and redcurrant dominate the palate, rounded off with a touch of vanilla. This wine has a fresh, simple, fruity style that is very quaffable.

Alamos Viognier 2010
Mendoza, Argentina

From vineyards high in the Uco valley, Mendoza under the gaze of the snow capped peaks of the Andes. The warm Argentinian climate is tempered by the effects of altitude making for perfect grape growing conditions albeit with strong hail storms a problem.
Alamos is the second wine from Catena, a producer of great quality and represent good value for money.

This Viognier is lightly pressed and lees stirred during fermentation and aging giving a more intense fruit packed flavour with good body and structure. 60% is then matured in French and American oak giving complexity without overpowering the varietal fruit
flavour.

The enticing aromas of peach and apricot abound with a slight floral hint. On the palate it is surprisingly full and rich with a fresh mouth-watering acidity and subtle spice on the finish.

Food match: Viognier is a great match to spicier food, and this fresh clean example would work well with Chicken chow mein

Château Mont Milan Rosé 2010
Corbières
Southern France

Despite having a rosé as our last Wine of the Week, I couldn't resist choosing another to try and drag out the last of this Indian Summer! Before the 1990's incredibly average table wine was the norm coming from Southern-France. However, the appearance of
Australian producer BRL Hardy's instigated a make-over, and quality has been increasing ever since, with many delicious and incredible value wines now widely available.

The Mediterranean influence gives good conditions for grape-growing, but can be subject to storms. This wine comes from an award-winning Corbières producer in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of Southern-France, and is a classic regional grape blend of Grenache,
Cinsault, and Syrah

Scoring 4/5 from our on line customer reviews, this rosé is pale pink in colour, with a nose of sweet raspberry and a hint of rose petal. The palate is light and fresh and highly quaffable, full of red fruits and a soft mouth-feel. Perfect chilled down on
a hot day.

Clos d'Yvigne
Bergerac, France

Bergerac is situated down stream from Bordeaux and focuses production on red, white and Rosé wines from the same grapes used by its illustrious neighbor (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet franc & Sauvignon blanc) The climate is generally warmer and drier
than Bordeaux as it lacks the tempering effects of the Atlantic Ocean. Long, warm Autumns allow the grapes to fully ripen and develop good body and full flavor in the wine.

This Rosé has been produced by ex-pat Patricia Atkinson who has famously published the novel 'The ripening sun' about her advancement in Bergerac from complete amateur who spoke no French to an established and award winning winemaker. This Rosé is 100% Merlot
grown on the sun soaked hills on the left bank of the Dordogne.

Bursting with fresh, clean berry fruits on the nose. The palate is packed with ripe strawberry and raspberry fruits with a hint of creaminess. More body than many southern French Rosé's but remains deliciously well rounded due to the freshness of the fruit.

Food match: Can stand up well on its own, chilled down on a warm Autumn evening. Alternatively, serve with light salad dishes or charcuterie.

Quincy A.C is situated on the left bank of the river Cher, a tributary of the river Loire of which this region takes its name. Loire Valley whites are world renowned for freshness of flavour and pleasant, mouth watering acidity. Quincy AC is of a similar
vein to Appellations of Sancerre, Pouilly-fume and Menetou Salon. These areas produce clean mineral fueled whites from Sauvignon Blanc. Although often overlooked Quincy was France's second established Appellation (After Chateauneuf Du Pape) Its initial popularity
was due to the ease of water transportation in the area.

The vineyards of Quincy sit on gravel soils which give excellent drainage for the vines. The warm summers of the region are temperated by the large amount of rivers in the area. Quincy wines can often be more intense than Sancerre and vary in style from
light to full bodied.

This light Sauvignon has an almost floral aroma with fresh gooseberry and citrus. On the palate it is bright and fresh, with a racy acidity. There are herbal and grassy elements and a surprisingly long finish.

Food match: Would be great with all manner of light seafood dishes, like a good Sancerre it also matches fantastically with Goats Cheese

Château de Cray Bourgogne Rouge 2008
Côte Chalonnaise
France

Not as well known as it's Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits Burgundian neighbours, the Côte Chalonnaise offers a range of high quality wines at very reasonable prices. Vinification and Viticultural techniques are the same as in the Côte de Beaune, with only
the top producers using new oak aging.

Semi-continental climate which gives a long cold winter, a humid spring and a dry hot summer. A complex chain of small hills offers the best vineyard sites excellent protection from frosts and good sun exposure.

Very light in colour and appearance, the nose is full of bright fruits and an underlying earthy-spiciness. Nicely concentrated blackcurrant and ripe cherry flavours, the palate is smooth and well-balanced with subtle tannins.

What is Sherry?

To celebrate the fact that a sherry has found its way for the first time onto Majestic Evesham's tasting counter, here is some info on the wonderful world of Sherry...

Sherry is a fortified wine meaning that a base wine is created and blended with a small percentage of high alcohol grape spirit. This was initially a way to vastly improve the length of time a wine would last before 'going off' therefore it could last the
long journeys across oceans to the 'new world' and beyond. In our modern age of stainless steel, sulphites and fast travel, it no longer needs to fulfill this quota and is often sent to the back of the booze cupboard re-emerging at Christmas. But this need
not be the case, Sherry is delicious all year round and comes in many different styles from a sweet dessert companion to fresh, dry sherry perfect with tapas. Here are a few key words to look out for..

Fino - The palest and driest Sherry style often with doughy, nutty, floral and green apple flavours

Fino-Amontillado – During maturation the 'flor' (layer of Yeast covering wine) can diminish naturally causing oxidised flavours creating a medium dry sherry with distinct almond flavours.

Oloroso – Matured with no 'flor' resulting in oxidised characteristics of coffee, brown sugar, sweet spice and walnut

Amontillado – Amber coloured balanced sherry combining features of both Fino and Oloroso styles

Manzanilla – Sherry's only DO categorised region, often making Sherries with a more 'tangy' flavour

PX (Pedro Ximinez) – A grape variety giving a sweeter sherry style, often the grapes are slightly raisined (passerilage) to concentrate sweetness, some sherries are so sweet they can have upto 500g/l sugar content!

Cream – Cream sherries have the addition of sweet grape juice, giving a smooth sweet finish. Pale creams are often sweetened Finos although can be blends

On our tasting counter at the moment we have an absolutely delicious Pedro Ximinez Sherry in an Oloroso style, Very sweet with coffee, chocolate, caramel and brown sugar and a fantastic almond and raisin finish. This would be the perfect partner to a creamy
rich tirimisu mmmmmmm...

Louis Latour Mâcon-Lugny 2009
Mâconnais, Burgundy
France

The family-run company of Maison Louis Latour is one of the most highly-respected négociant-éléveurs in Burgundy. In particular, the Mâcon-Village AC of Mâcon-Lugny has been led to great fame and popularity largely through their efforts.

The Mâconnais produces 3 times more white wine than the rest of Burgundy put together. It's hills are made up of a rich alkaline clay soil which the Chardonnay grape variety loves. The 2009 vintage was magnificent for Burgundy, with the vines enjoying perfect
conditions particularly in the maturation phase.

The nose is full of creamy lemon curd and citrus notes with a note of white blossom. 100% vinification in stainless steel tanks gives a fresh and lively palate, with crisp green apples and a buttery richness.

De Morgenzon 'DMZ' Syrah
Stellenbosch, South Africa
2009

South African wines can often be viewed as a cross over point between 'new' and 'old' world styles, as proven in the varying usage of the grape variety wording of Syrah/Shiraz throughout the region. This wine has opted for the old world Syrah wording but
displays bright intense 'new world' style fruit, with 'old world ' charm and elegance.

The Stellenbosch region which surrounds the city of Cape Town has a warm Mediterranean climate, quality wine production is possible here due to climate tempering factors such as the ice cold Benguela current which travels north from Antarctica and cooling
winds from the Atlantic known locally as the 'Cape Doctor'. This wine hails from the terraced vineyards of Stellenboschkloof on mainly granite soils.

Following the theme of a new/old world cross over the wine is first vinified in stainless steel then matured in French oak for 11 months. The wine is therefore youthful with intense blackberry fruit and violet hints, followed by a well rounded softly spiced
vanilla finish. Drinking great now but will also keep for a couple of years.

With Fine Wine Friday's proving to be a big hit (see the events section for more info), Team Evesham have decided to start delving further into the world/our shelves of Fine Wine!

The Fine Wine that sparked my interest to study a little more was the Louis Latour Corton Grancey, as this is the eldest Red Burgundy in our range at 9 years old, the next eldest being just 3 years!

Chateau Corton Grancey Grand Cru 2002
Domaine Louis Latour

Tasting Note:

Beautiful red with ruby highlights. A complex nose revealing an earthy mix of red fruit, spice and liquorice. Rounded in the mouth with the same juicy flavours as on the nose rounded out with hints of coffee. Harmonious with supple tannins. Tasted November
2010.

Vinification:

Traditional open-vat fermentation at the Cuverie of Corton Grancey followed by 10 to 12 months in oak casks

Description:

From vineyard sites around the town of Aloxe-Corton in the Beaune region of Burgundy. This particular wine is only produced in years when the Pinot Noir grapes reach perfect maturity. The wine derives from the following Grand Cru holdings : Les Bressandes,
Les Chaumes, Les Pougets, Les Perrières and Les Grèves.
Average age of vines is 40 years.

Waimea Estate Pinot Gris 2009
Nelson, New Zealand

The flagship Waimea range is made every year from the best sites on Waimea Estate vineyards. Waimea means 'river gardens' in Maori, and the wines clearly demonstrate the philosophy of minimal intervention in vineyard and winery - producing wines that are
a reflection of the terroir in which they are produced. New Zealand Pinot Gris is more akin to Alsace in style than the drier Pinot Grigio, with notes of apple, pear, honeysuckle, spice & bread.

Nelson is found at the tip of the South Island and west of the infamous Marlborough, and is one of the smallest New Zealand wine zones. Yet, per hectare of vines planted, Nelson consistently wins more awards than the other New Zealand wine regions. High
annual sunshine hours & a long ripening season give vibrant aromatic wines, and stony soils of alluvial origin give a flinty backbone.

Rich & slightly golden in colour, the nose is packed full of ripe pear fruits and a hint of sweet spices. The palate follows through with added peach and honey, and a mineral finish classic of this region counter-balances the off-dry sweetness. A lingering
finish.

Food match: A fuller apéritif or a good match to a prawn red Thai curry.

After attending the London Wine Fair this year, Heather & a group of Majestics got to meet the producers of Codorníu and were treated to a behind the scenes tasting of their latest wines. The latest releases proved that Codorníu are continuing to produce
delicious sparkling wines, and that each year keeps getting better and better!

Codorníu is one of the 2 Cava giants of Spain (the other is Freixenet) with an impressive history; still family-run and owned, it is the largest and most innovative producer of Spanish sparkling wine, with production that dwarfs that of Moet & Chandon in Champagne.

Often overlooked, the native grapes used in the production of Cava (Macabéo, Xarel-lo & Parellada) work together to create a deliciously dry and refreshing sparkling wine, with lots of elegant citrus fruits and a characteristic 'earthy' quality that defines
Cava. Codorníu are also leading the way in experimentation, with plantings of the Chardonnay grape rocketing due to the extra depth and body it creates, as well as the inclusion of red grapes to give richer and more rounded styles.

Extra de Codorníu Brut NV

Macabéo, Xarel-lo, Parellada
A classically styled easy drinking Cava displaying notes of green apple and citrus, with an edge of brioche and a touch of almond. Light in body and clean acidity.
£6.99

Codorníu Selección Raventós NV – Heather's favourite!

Chardonnay, Macabéo, Xarel-lo
A more modern example, with the Chardonnay giving added notes of peachy lemon and a little more body. Still dry with fine, persistent bubbles and good length.
£7.49

Casale di Valle Chianti 2009
DOCG
Italy

Chianti is known as one of the great native Italian red wines, and has been making a comeback in popularity since the mid 1990s. Found in the Tuscany region of west-central Italy, Chianti is based on the native Italian Sangiovese grape, although classic
French varieties also grow extremely well here.

Tuscany experiences long, dry summers, and the north-east Apenines and the western Tyrrhenian Sea give protection from the extremes of winter. Complex soils allow a wide variety of grapes to prosper well.

A good example of a basic Chianti style, with a bright fruit nose of cherry, raspberry and plum. A pleasantly soft mouth texture with mouth watering acidity and light tannins.

Food Match: Smoked ham tortellini

As memories began to get hazier throughout the fine wine tasting night, I thought it would be wise to piece together my knowledge of the fantastic reds we were privileged enough to try on the fine wine evening. As mentioned previously this tasting was in
a quiz format in which my team were victorious, hurrah! And sadly (even with suspect cheating) Heathers team were a lowly third! However I digress from the most important factor of the evening, the tasting..

Red number one was a tricky one to decipher on a blind tasting - a wide range of interesting flavours from rich cherry and warm stone fruits to mocha and dark chocolate hints. The lighter colour and crisp, tight acidity gave it away as a Pinot Noir and the
hit of ripe fruits showed off its new world roots. With Pinot Noir being experimented with all across the world its exact location was hard to place; USA, Oz and Chile to name a few are producing fantastic Pinot at the moment however this example was revealed
as coming from Martinborough, New Zealand. Decanter recently sang the praises of 09 N.Z Pinot Noir and quality did shine through with a lovely long finish, the tannins were present yet not clingy suggesting not too much bottle aging is required for this one.
1 = Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2009, Martinborough £36.00 (when 2 bottles purchased as part of mixed case)

Red number two was less hard to place - Rich blackcurrant, smoke and leather with a hint of oak on the nose meant this had to be a Bordeaux with ample Cabernet Sauvignon so left bank. Once it has been figured out that the wine you are drinking is a relatively
high priced Bordeaux you can't help but try and find fault with it, but this was very hard with this example. Everything was as it should be; strong but not overpowering tannins, nicely full bodied and rich whilst remaining well rounded and a long complicated
finish. This would be a great way to try a fantastic Bordeaux from a classic high quality region without re-mortgaging the house. Can keep for up to 5 years.
2= La Reserve de Leoville Barton 04/05 St Julien £25.00

Number three was my own personal favorite of the night, although it was a struggle to distinguish what exactly it was! Incredibly warming soft dark fruits and well integrated tannins with a vastly lengthy smooth finish. It was pleasantly complex and seemed
to change in the glass giving something else on each sip. We guessed correctly at a Cote-Rotie, a wine I have read about but never tasted, made in the north Rhone often with a dash of Viognier to soften. (A style of wine now emerging more in Australia). Happy
with our decision we then decided the Viognier played a large part in the complexity, only to find out this was a pure Syrah varietal. Oh well, we got the answer right at least! To do this wine justice it must be consumed in front of a crackling oak fire in
a red leather arm chair in a dusty library of a country estate in autumn.. or on the sofa when the kids are asleep!
3= Cote-Rotie Madinere 2009, Cuilleron £40.00

And Finally..
The grand finale did not disappoint, wisely placed at the end of the tasting it was big bold and full bodied. Most teams got the answer right - An Australian Shiraz, this version deliberately avoided new oak and instead focused on the grape itself. This was
a good way of seeing the difference between a French Syrah and Australian Shiraz, where the Cote-Rotie went for warm complexity, the Shiraz packed a full bodied punch, it was bold and brassy with super-long length, I think I can still taste it today! Someone
described it as a 'Blockbuster' if so this would definitely be an explosion packed Rambo flick with the Cote-Rotie being a twist turning film noir spy thriller.
4= Penfold's St Henri Shiraz, Auldana, South Australia £40.00

A fantastic night was had by all (winners and losers!) and we cant wait for the next one!

Royal Tokaji Dry Furmint 2008
Mád and Tarcal
Hungary

Not content with the world-wide fame and popularity of their sweet Tokaji dessert wine, the Royal Tokaji Wine Company set about producing a similarly high quality dry wine using the same grape (100% furmint) in response to the needs of different global markets.

The Vineyards of Tokaji lie North-East of Budapest in the Zemplin mountains. The long warm summers in this region allow for long ripening periods and misty autumn mornings are essential for the dessert wines of which Tokaji is most famous. The 2008 vintage
contended with difficult weather patterns, but was saved by a long Indian summer.

An interesting alternative to popular every day whites like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. Lots of rich honeyed tropical fruits on the nose with just a hint of almonds. On the palate a refreshing acidity cuts through the honey and rich tropical fruits,
with a hint of green apples and a streak of minerality.

Food Match: Rich creamy chicken dishes

Us lucky lot at Majestic had a fantastic evening recently, tasting some of the higher priced fine wines in the range. We were blind tasting the wines in the format of a quiz, which I am pleased to announce my team won! The main quiz questions related to
grape variety and region, of which many were surprisingly tricky to place. We also had to piece together a tasting note for the wines which I have attempted to replicate. Here is a list of the wines we were fortunate enough to taste:

Veuve Clicquot NV
What better way to commence a tasting than a chilled glass of Veuve Clicquot on arrival! We chowed down on fish and chips whilst sipping the delicate 'grand marque' which went together surprisingly well. Veuve is a fantastically delicate Champagne which focuses
on the pale lemon and green apple flavours of the chardonnay grape with a light background of buttered toast and honey.

1. Peregrine Pinot Gris 2010, Central Otago, N.Z
A hard wine to place in a blind tasting! Before the wine reached our lips we pinned it down as new world thanks to fresh exotic aromas; my team guessed at viognier due to just a hint of spice on the finish, Heathers team were gunning at Italian Soave. Most
were surprised when the answer was revealed and it has sparked an interest in most to try more Pinot Gris!

The ability of modern New Zealand wine makers to produce high quality and complex wines from Pinot Gris shines through in this version. Strong flavours of ripe mango, peach and grapefruit jump out and are perfectly balanced by the light acidity and fresh clean
finish. The token minerality of Pinot Gris is also there in abundance making it refreshing and mouth watering whist remaining interesting and complex. Shellfish and prawns especially would match well, best to drink young and fresh and in the blazing summer
sun.

2. Meursault 2008/09 Henri Bouillot
The woosh! of toasty oak meant most teams had penned Chardonnay as the grape immediately, however there was debate between a white Burgundy and the possibility of a new world chardy. On the palate it became more clear this was French as the fruit was not punchy
and exotic but light and elegant lemon and apple.

Like many Burgundian producers the Bouillot family have a long history of wine making dating back six generations. In 1996 Henri Bouillot set up a negociant business and has quickly built up a strong reputation for quality. The first thing that hits you is
the strong aromatics of the toasty French oak, followed by warm pear and citrus notes with well rounded acidity and a backbone of buttered toast and soft vanilla. Fantastic example of Cote du Beaune Burgundy which is drinking very well now but could take a
couple of years bottle ageing.

3. Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Kreutles, Emmerich Knoll, Wachau, 2009
The wild card of the whites, many of the trainees including me have never tasted this variety before. Guesses aimed towards a mass of different grape varieties which half matched the product we were tasting. My team plummed (again) for a viognier though not
overtly confidently, others suggested Alsacian whites. Heathers team (must have cheated) got the variety correct!

The wine is in a distinctive bottle with a picture of St Urban - the patron saint of wine growing used on most Knoll wines. 'Smaragd' is a definition for the best and most valuable wines of the Wachau. This Gruner Veltliner is very light and crisp with a range
of herbaceous flavours from fresh green pepper to grass and garden herbs, with fresh, tame citrus fruits to round off the palate.

Right, thats the whites done, stay tuned for the reds!

Majestic Evesham will be adding a fine wine to our tasting counter on the first Friday of every month, today is Masi Amarone so feel free to come and taste before its all gone!

Pic Saint-Loup
Domaine Haut-Lirou
Coteaux du Languedoc
France

The blended wines of the Languedoc are gaining an increasingly more appreciative view from wine critics worldwide thanks to ongoing investment in new winemaking technology. This example is dominated by Syrah with Grenache and Mourvedre making up 20% of the
final product.

Pic Saint-Loup differs from most Languedoc sub-regions in both its lack of use of the Carignan grape, and its independence from co-operative cellars. The vines are densly packed and only 500 ha are planted with the grapes for this blend, upon the high altitude
slopes of Pic Saint-Loup. Domaine Haut-Lirou has been a family vineyard for over 5 generations.

This wine is cherry red in colour, with a youthful aroma of light rasberry and blackberries. The palate is delightfully complex with woodland notes with sun baked black fruits. Medium bodied and well rounded this wine has a long and crisp pepper filled finished
which punches above its modest price tag.

Food Match: Perfect with a rich beef stew and a summers evening

Pouilly-Fumé 'Les Cascadelles' 2010
Caves de Pouilly-sur-Loire
France

Pouilly-Fume is one of the most famous white wines of the Loire region, typically showing a smoky or 'gunflint' flavour. This is said to be a result of the fairly neutral Sauvignon Blanc grape variety (known locally as Blanc Fumé) gaining this character
from the mostly limestone or flinty soils on which it's grown.

The Pouilly-Fumé appellation is in the Central region of the Loire, experiencing a continental climate, with a serious problem of spring frosts. Spread over 8 Kms, the appellation is sheltered by hills on the right bank of the Loire river, with ideal exposure
to the sun. This exposure ensures perfect ripeness of the grapes, but also vulnurability to frosts.

The nose displays typical Sauvignon Blanc characters of citrus and green apple. These fruits carry through to a lively palate, where they are joined by the classic pouilly-fumé hints of steely flint and a smoky, rounded texture. The finish is clean with
decent length.

DB Reserve Pinot Noir 2009
De Bortoli
South Australia

De Bortoli is a family wine company who's aim is: 'to produce genuinely interesting wine styles with a strong regional focus that also offer outstanding value'. This Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley is a great example, as an appealing and complex red at
a very affordable price point.
The De Bortoli winery follow the winemaking philosophy that great wine begins in the vineyard, and the Yarra Valley is a region with a cool climate and well structured soils ideal for viticulture. The climate is marginally warmer than Burgundy, but cooler and
more reliable than Bordeaux.

Produced in a marginally warmer climate region, this Pinot Noir is riper and fleshier version of your average Burgundy. The nose gives lots of cooked red fruits such as ripe cherry and strawberry, with just a touch of smoke. The palate follows through with
a silky soft texture and a herbal note. The finish has a pleasantly sweet red fruit taste.

Marquis de Pennautier 2010
Southern France

Cabardès is a languedoc appellation in the South of France. An unusual combination of nominally Bordeaux and Rhône grape varieties are frequently blended together, for instance this rosé contains Malbec - a classic Bordeaux grape (and rarely seen in rosé)
- aswell as Grenache and Syrah, the stars of the Rhône.

The Cabardès terroir is a blend of limestone and clay, Mediterranean heat, Atlantic influence, and cool mountain air. Winds are high, consistently buffeting the mountains where the vines are grown promoting healthy circulation.

A bright but not too heavy ruby rose colour, the nose is full of red fruits namely raspberry and redcurrents. On the palate the wine is light in body, with plenty of the red fruit flavours coming through and an attractive hint of liquorice. The finish is
full and refreshing.

Margarethenhof Ayler Kupp Riesling Kabinett
2009
Germany

At Majestic last week we saw a limited German Parcel of aged Rieslings go flying out; hence this wine of the week was chosen to show the quality of the younger vintages aswell. An unfortunate incident with some messy wine laws in 1971 & 1994 saw large cooperatives
flooding the market with masses of inferior wines; a move which still haunts Germany's wine name to this day. Yet, the great wines of Germany are better than ever, and at prices that are a fraction of the true potential.

Every German wine is graded by the natural sugar content of it's grapes – Kabinett being driest and Trockenbeerenauslese the sweetest. This Riesling is produced in the area most famous for producing the raciest & most exciting Riseling's – the Mosel. The
location follows the river, & the protective valley sides allow moderate rainfall & rapid warming providing ideal ripening conditions.

Light in colour, the nose is full of lively citrus fruits that carry a sharp intensity characteristic of this region. A steely minerality comes through with touches of floral notes. On the palate, honeyed notes come through with a slightly oily texture,
which combines well with a high level of acidity to create a soft finish. Impressive finish.

Les Douze Fitou 2008

This Wine of the Week is a juicy, full-bodied red from the Mont Tauch co-operative in the Languedoc, responsible for half of all production and since the mid 1990s, performing better than many individual producers. The list of names down the front of the
label are representative of the growers that compete each year to have their grapes selected to be included in this wine.

The Languedoc is known as France's best value wine region, and is also the most important in terms of volume of wine produced. The climate is very much Mediterranean, with very hot dry summers. This wine is a blend of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, and really
shows the potential of what the Languedoc has to offer.

Attractively purpley-red in colour, the nose gives concentrated aromas of red and black fruits like cherry and blackcurrant, with hints of spices and lots of liquorice. The palate follows on from the nose, with mouth-filling body and velvety soft texture.
The ripe fruit concentration shows off the influence of new-world wine making techniques.

Food match: Will perfectly complement all BBQ'd meats, particularly steaks.

Viu Manent Reserva Viognier
Colchagua, Chile
2010

Viu Manent has a history that dates back to 1935, with the main vineyard site being owned since 1954. The vines are situated in the Colchagua Valley, 80 miles south-east of the capital Santiago. This Viognier comes from Viu Manent's San Carlo vineyard, one
of the oldest in Chile and with an altitude of 800 feet.

The Rapel Region in which this wine is produced is of high altitude, with a maritme climate cooled by the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard's are mainly situated on fertile clay-loam soils which allow good drainage. The 2010 vintage suffered one setback of an
earthquake a few days shy of the harvest period measuring 8.8 on the richter scale and “Crushed a tank like an accordian on the ground!” Fortunately the bulk of the product was saved and vinified successfully.

With no oak ageing and 2 months resting on its lees, this Viognier is fresh and fruit driven. Vibrant yellow in colour it has aromas of fresh tropical fruits. The palate fills the mouth with pineapple, peach and pear notes. The acidity is lighter than expected
for a new world wine with an elegant texture.

Food match: Classically Viognier is a great match for Thai cusine, this will also pair well with Moroccan dishes.

Cloudy Bay is often viewed as the wine that put New Zealand 'on the map' in terms of quality wine producing regions. The 1985 vintage developed a cult status for the wine which still strongly survives to this day. In the 1970's New Zealand was viewed as
risky territory for grape growing, however the maritime climate and fertile well drained soils have produced some of the most exciting wines of the 'new world'.

Cloudy Bay first started on Jacksons Road, Rapaura in the Marlborough region. Its from here that its signature Sauvignon Blanc was and is still produced. This spot is the inspiration for the moody grey mountainous logo, synonymous with the Cloudy Bay brand,
taken from the Richmond Ranges which surround the vineyard.

It hasn't all been smooth sailing for Cloudy Bay, the arrival of Phylloxera damaged many vines in the early 90's and has been rectified by grafting vines onto new rootstock. Since this minor setback the brand has continued from strength to strength producing
some of the highest quality wines New Zealand has to offer.

New vineyards have started up in the Brancott and Omaka Valleys, which has allowed Cloudy Bay to produce fantastic wines from the Pinot Noir grape. This is a relatively new development with vines planted in Omaka as recently as 2007, the complex yet delicate
nature of these new emerging wines is classically Cloudy Bay in style.

The 2009 Pinot Noir is currently on a fantastic internet order deal of 6 bottles for
£132.00, a saving of £33.00

The 2007 Riesling variety from an exceptionally small harvest, offering a similar style to the off-dry Rieslings from Alsace is also on a great deal of 6 bottles for
£119.94, a saving of £30.06

Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache
Barossa, Australia
2009

Proudly proclaimed 'Australia's oldest family owned winery', Yalumba have been rocketing from strength to strength recently mostly due to their spectacular Viognier's, and more recently, this superb Grenache. Whilst Grenache may be known as the 'work-horse'
grape of the Rhone, this unflattering nick-name is quashed when Grenache vines reach an age of over 50 years old, and the fruit yields become much lower and highly concentrated.

The Barossa valley is the oldest and most important of Australia's premium wine-growing areas, with a hot and dry climate well suited to producing full-bodied reds.

Bright crimson in colour, with a ripe, sweet fruit nose of cranberry and plum fruits. On the palate, the texture is smooth and full, balancing the sweet fruits of the nose with a herbal complexity and earthy notes.

Food match: Try with full flavoured bbq'd pork chops and a sweet red onion relish.

Lindauer Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs
New Zealand

Produced by the guys behind the giant Montana Wines, Lindauer was one of the first and best New Zealand Sparkling wines to be produced and released on a large scale. Montana are the biggest wine company in New Zealand, owning 55% of all New Zealand wines.
But don't let this put you off – they're known for producing high quality and consistent wines at all price points.

The climatic location of Gisborne/Hawke's Bay is near-perfect for creating sparkling wines, encouraging high acidity & intense fruit concentrations in the grapes. This Lindauer Blanc de Blancs uses only the chardonnay grape, promoting elegance, & has spent
24 months ageing on it's lees which gives a creamy and toasty complexity.

Fine, consistent bubbles run through this wine, with a deliciously lemony and biscuity nose. On the palate the bubbles are delicate, with ripe citrus flavours and brioche notes. The finish is refreshingly dry with good length.

Food match: A great aperitif wine, or match to a creamy mussel dish.

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin has a lengthy and fascinating history dating back as far as 1772 when Philippe Clicquot, owner of a few select vineyards in the Champagne region decided to create a wine business under the family name. The Champagne house is most
famous for the wife of Philipe's son Nicole Ponsardin. Nicole married François Clicquot in a Champagne cellar as churches were not yet re-consecrated following the French revolution.

After the death of François in 1805 the company was left in the hands of Mme Clicquot who renamed the business Veuve (literally widow). Mme Clicquot successfully controlled the business through France's economic turmoil. Famously she managed to secure the
shipment of 25,000 bottles through Napoleonic barricades into heartland Russia. Through perseverance and devotion Veuve Clicquot found its way into almost all major European courts at the time and quickly developed a brand name synonymous with the rich and
powerful which it still holds to this day.

Mme Clicquot was not only a shrewed businesswoman but also innovative in Champagne production methods. She is credited for creating a riddling process called remuage (rotating bottles gradually to ease yeast extraction), and even making the first riddling
table for the process. Mme Clicquot is celebrated in the companies signature vintage wine named 'La Grande Dame'.

Today Veuve Clicqout Ponsardin NV retains much of its traditional values through its relatively 'hands-off' approach to winemaking (No filtering before blending and only light filtration prior to bottling) This results in a rich fruit palate and a delicately
yeasty aroma, creating a superbly well balanced wine with incredibly fine and persistent bubbles.

Veurve Clicquot NV is an instantly recognisable high quality Champagne and is perfect for toasting any celebration, Currently on a fantastic bottle price of
£29. This offer is available till the 20th June so it's the perfect opportunity to stock up on a fantastic Champagne ready for any upcoming celebrations!

Bacaro Pinot Grigio 2009
Italy

This Wine of the Week ties in with our Italian Tasting Week with a quintessential Italian white wine – Pinot Grigio. Bacaro is a producer situated in the North-East region of Italy, where freshness, crisp acidity and purity of varietal character personifies
the wines produced there.

Bounded by the Dolomites to the North and the Adriatic sea to the south, North-East Italy experiences harsh, cold winters and hot summers. Vintage variation can be a problem, thus the North-East is leading the quest for more modern vinification techniques.

Pale in colour, the nose detects plenty of fresh green fruits with hints of perfume. The palate follows on from the nose with notes of pear and stone fruit. Light in body and fresh acidity create the perfect wine for summer swigging, whatever the weather!

Food Match: Perfect on it's own, or match to light pasta dishes.

Errazuriz Reserva Merlot
2010
Chile

Errazuriz is one of Chile's leading wine producers creating a range of easy drinking wines packed with concentrated fruit flavours. This Merlot started life in the Aconcagua Valley, where cool, rainy winters, hot dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes
create near-perfect conditions for grape-growing.

The 2010 vintage was most notable for a slow, even and gentle ripening of the grapes coming up to the harvest, encouraging excellent concentration and intense colouring. 50% of the wine has been aged in French Oak for added complexity.

Bright crimson colouring shows the wines youthfulness. A nose of ripe red and black fruits including raspberry and soft plums follows through to the palate, where subtle hints of vanilla and toast echo the use of French Oak. Medium body and soft tannins
make this wine perfect for everyday drinking!

Fairleigh Estate
Pinot Noir Rosé
2010

Fairleigh Estate is situated in the increasingly famous Marlborough region of New Zealand, producing wines that are exclusive to Majestic. This Rosé has been chosen as our Wine of the Week to tie in with our 'New Arrivals' Tasting Week, and is sure to adopt
the popularity of it's Sauvignon Blanc counterpart.

The Marlborough region enjoys a combination of free-draining soils, abundant sunshine, cool nights and a long ripening season which create the ideal environment to produce wines that are marked by an electrifyingly bright fruit flavour. Known for it's Sauvignon
Blanc, more and more areas of Marlborough are giving way to increased plantings of the Pinot Noir grape, which creates rich fruity reds and increasingly intense Rosés.

The delicate nose is dominated by classic Pinot Noir aromas of raspberry and red cherry. The palate is light and fresh, with soft-edged acidity and juicy red fruits.

Food match: Enjoy on it's own, or will partner well to grilled Salmon

Marqués de la Concordia is a shining example of a producer who manages to combine New World style with Old World terroir. This is a wine of high quality that is drinking well now but will increase in complexity with further bottle ageing.

Despite the contintental and sometimes harsh climate many areas of Spain experience, Rioja is sheltered from the rain bearing Atlantic winds by the Sierra de Cantabria which also moderate extremes of climate. The 2005 vintage was near perfect for grape growing,
delivering fruit of optimum ripeness.

The mix of Grenache and Tempranillo grapes creates a classic Rioja delivering complex aromas of ripe fruits, cedar and spice with a smooth palate of dark fruits and a hint of rich roasted coffee beans.

Food Match: Fantastic served with roast lamb cutlets.

Errazuriz Sauvignon Blanc
Chile
2010

As an estate winery, Viña Errázuriz strives to produce the finest wines by controlling every stage of the winemaking process, from grape growing in the Aconcagua, Casablanca and Curicó valleys, to final production. The aim is to produce wines with elegance
and complexity. The grapes for the Sauvignon Blanc Single Vineyard 2010 came from a specific sector of this vineyard located in the Casablanca Valley.

The La Escultura vineyard benefits from cool coastal breezes that encourage slow ripening of the grapes, helping to preserve their flavours and ensure good levels of acidity. To preserve the wine's aromatic potential, most of the juice was fermented in stainless
steel tanks.

A bright straw-yellow colour with greenish tints. With a great elegance, this wine displays fresh fruit notes with subtle tones of passion fruit intermingling with notes of green chili, tomato leaf and fresh-cut herbs. The palate is crisp and minerally,
with citrus and herbal notes.

Malbec World Day

This Sunday 17th April marks the first ‘Malbec World Day’, a celebration of this deliciously full-bodied variety that represents the benchmark of Argentinian red wine production. Argentina is the world's fifth biggest wine producing country, where most vineyards
are located around the base of the Andes mountains, which help to protect the vines from extreme weather conditions whilst providing snowmelt for natural irrigation. Malbec, originally from South-West France, has here developed its own distinct and unique
character with intense flavours of black fruits and spice which are a perfect match for the country's national dish of beef steak.

Some of our favourites include:

Gougenheim Malbec 2009 Mendoza £8.99 buy 2 save £3 £7.49
A stunningly pure and fresh example obtained through the sole use of free-run juice at pressing. Aromas of fresh cherry and plum lead to a supple and polished finish.

Catena Malbec 2008 Mendoza £11.99 buy 2 save £4 £9.99
Great complexity is achieved through the selection of grapes from different altitudes and micro-climates of the area. Ripe blackberry aromas come to the fore accompanied by hints of vanilla.
