Matsu El Picaro 2010 Toro
£7.99

Not only do these bottles of wine look striking but the wine tastes great also.
Picaro means 'rogue'or 'rascal' and this wine is the most youthful style in the range.
The Matsu wines are from Toro in the far west of Spain and they are made from 100%Tinta de Toro, the local variant of Tempranillo.
The grapes come from vines over fifty years old but the wine only spends three months in oak. This preserves the natural fruit flavours of blackberries and blueberries.
Enjoy this wine on its own or great paired with boldly flavoured pasta dishes .

Soave is traditionally seen as a lower-class wine, with certainly not the prestige of other fine white wines. However, this Garganega is the shinning light of soave.

The Inama family are committed to produced the finest quality wines from handpicking the grapes, to becoming totally organic to their key principle: 'Oenological Minimalism'.

With a relatively low yield of 13,000 bottles a year, this is certainly a wine to snap up.

30% new barriques could potentially spell trouble, but is restrained by 8 months of Batonnage which also adds an extra complexity thanks to the mannoproteins.

The flavours evoked by the wine are of lavender infused cream with light fruit cake – floral, creamy, spicy yet elegantly light with a refreshing acidity.

Tabali Reserva Especial Chardonnay 2010,
Limari Valley,
Chile

This new addition to our range is really great example of the new wave of elegant and classy Chilean chardonnays.

Noticeably different to what you might associate with New World chardonnays, this wine is all about restraint and elegance, and purity of fruit, balanced perfectly by subtle oak ageing. Much more in the Burgundy mold but with richer, more tropical fruits.

A lifted and complex nose of hazelnut and orange peel. Exhibits a creamy texture and distinct mineral grip on the palate, which overflows with fresh apple and citrus fruit.

Scrumptious.

£9.99

Charlotte's Staff Choice: Medalla Real Carmenere

Santa Rita Medalla Real Carmenere
2008 Gran Reserva, Leyda Valley
£8.79

The Medalla Real collection represents the diversity of Chile's terroirs, which is influenced by the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. This collection is made in a more classic style and the grapes are carefully hand-picked from their oldest vineyards.
This wine is deep and intense ruby in colour. Much like its appearance, there are deep rich flavours of black fruits, vanilla and chocolate. This wine is big and flavorsome which would be prefect paired with steak or even a rich game stew.

Chateau Tayac 2007,
Cru Bourgeois, Margaux

Having recently been lucky enough to visit Margaux, I have something of a penchant for them currently.

2007 was a bit of a hit-or-miss year in Bordeaux, which is why prices can be so reasonable, even if the wine is stunning.

As with any Bordeaux, the base taste is of ripe juicy black currants, but the refined nuances of liquorice, pepper and cinnamon make the Chateau Tayac stand out from the multitude.

Like any multigenerational Bordeaux chateau, the tannins are abundant, although nice and fleshy – meaning this wine would be superb with a steak or goats cheese salad.

£14.99

'Sun, Sea & Sangria'? No - more like 'Rain, Chateaux & Grand Cru Classe'

Snowing in Edinburgh - what better time to shoot off for two nights of Chateaux touring in Bordeaux - home of the famous Cab Savs and Merlots (and the infamous prices)?

Within an hour of checking in to the Hotel Majestic (coincidence much?!), we were relaxing in one of those stereotypical French cafes (You know the sort - light bites to eat, outside seating, and a wine list that would be the envy of every prestigious hotel
in the UK). After indulging in a bottle (or three) of vino, including the delightfully moreish Potensac 1998, a quick change of clothes and we were off to a brasserie

NOTE: Highlight of the night - the waiter's horrified face when I explained that I was a VEGETARIAN! If there is one fault of the French people, it is the inability to understand abstinence from meat - yes, even from steak for all of you who
are shaking in horror at the idea!
A long night of wine tasting ensued, over which I shall politely draw a veil, and then a collapse into our beds back at the Hotel Majestic (yes, still can't get over the name!)

Day 2
An obscenely early start to pick up the other Majestic staff from the airport, and the horrifying realization that we will now have to share our scrummy wine quickly developed into an amazing day as we enter the caverns of Chateau Villemarin in St-Emillon.
After a chilly tour, we emerged above ground to warm up with some wine tasting.

Tip: If you see it, snap up the 2008 vintage - it will age amazingly well whilst still currently being at an affordable price, although can't guarantee how long that shall last (unfortunately Majestic doesn't yet stock it, although fear not,
for I shall certainly be sending an email to the buying team!)
Next, a few hours of enjoying the plethora of wine shops (If you can't afford to journey to Bordeaux for a free tasting counter, come in here! Not so glamorous but certainly worth the effort)

A wee nap in the hotel (I took the free shampoo as evidence of the hotel's name!) left us raring to go again, so it was off to another brasserie (who had been warned in advance about my 'unfortunate eating habits') to sample some quintessential French cuisine
with the Potensac 2005 and the impressive Domaine de Chevalier 2002. And this is where I say a huge apology to my fellow herbivores around the globe.....whilst dairy is normally off the menu for me, the best dessert wine I have ever tasted, the Chateau Broustet
2007, was sooooo sublime, it screamed out for a perfectly complementary dessert......roll on the creme brulee! (a little pot of heaven for those of you who don't know)

Again, a veil needs to be drawn over the rest of the night. Suffice it to say we visited several bars/restaurants/other drinking vending places.....

Day 3
After several very very necessary espressos, we had a walking tour of Bordeaux (my particular fav was the Gothic styled cathedral - be sure to check it out) and then a short 45 minute drive later, we were in Margaux to visit the ostentatious Chateau Prieure-Lichine,
which began in the 15C as a monastery and still uses many of the original buildings, as well as a collection of over 150 fireplace backs (apparently one of the old owners has an unusual passion.....each to their own, I guess)

After an extensive wine tasting and a few cheeky flutes of the Laurent-Perrier (on special offer at Majestic @ £27), it was back to the airport and Dundee..........

Whilst much too short for my liking (I am considering a month long sojourn there), this trip shall stay in my memory forever as pure perfection, from the hilarity of the hotel's name, to the wonderful company, especially of our host, Austin, to the sumptuous,
decadent wines of Bordeaux.

As for 'Sun, Sea & Sangria', sorry Espania – but I am a convert to the Cult of Bordeaux!

Domaines Paul Mas 'Vignes De Nicole'
Chardonnay Viognier 2010
Southern France

As I am sure you are all aware by now, based on my previous Staff Choices, I am a huge fan of whites.

This wine really stood out for me because it combines the buttery vanilla character of a classic french chardonnay with the tropical notes of viognier.....in perfect balance – what a rare treat!

Think tropical fruit tart with fresh vanilla pods and lashings of cream.

Pair with a creamy Chicken Chasseur or a green Thai Curry
£9.99

Avignonesi is a well regarded winery in Tuscany – one region in Italy which produces fantastic wines.
This wine is a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This Tuscan red wine is smooth and rounded with flavours of cherry, red berries and a hint of spice.
This would be the perfect partner to rich meat dishes, to be enjoyed with family and friends.

£9.99

In 1998, Angelo Gaja was awarded Decanter Man of the Year, and ever since then he has been experimenting with wines outside of his usual Barberescos and Barolos, to attempt to be the finest producer of Italian wines.

This wine stands out because Gaja refused a DoC appellation in order to be unconstrained in how he produced Promis.

An elegant aroma of plums, black cherries and cassis is followed up by spicy nuances and a long lasting yet smooth tannic presence.

Over the next 5 years, this wine will open up beautifully, although can certainly be drunk now!

For food matches, think herb filled tomato sauces with fresh pasta or something with a little kick to it – chili marinated pork or chorizo tapas style.

At just £21.00, this is certainly of of our best value fine wines so come and get some today.....

D.V.Catena Syrah
2008 Mendoza
£9.99

The Catena winery is a family business and has been a name in Argentinian wine for four generations. The D.V. Catena wines were named in honour of Domingo V. Catena, the father of the current owner Nicolas Catena.
The grapes used for this wine have been specially sourced from exceptional parcels of fruit offering a wine of unique character and balance.
A complex and fruit driven palate with tones of spice and vanilla.
This is a great, full-flavoured wine perfect with winter casseroles or a rare steak.

The Chocolate Block 2010
Boukenhoutskloof, Western Cape
£20

The two best things in life: chocolate and wine!
This is an exciting blend of five different grape varieties: Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Viognier. While being predominantly Syrah, each variety adds its personality to the wine. The grapes come from several specially selected blocks of
vines on the estate. They are then fermented and aged in old French oak.
There is an elegantly smooth palate of cassis, blackberry, coffee and chocolate. This is a wonderfully rich wine and would be best paired with steak or game.

Our specially selected Fine Wine to try this month is Chateau Les Ormes de Pez from
St-Estephe 1995. £35

Chateau les Ormes de Pez is one of the leading Cru Bourgeois properties. Located in Saint-Estephe, the northernmost of the four most important appellations in the Haut-Medoc district of Bordeaux.
Being a 1995 vintage there is lots of character in this glass. It has a complex nose of spicy black fruit, pencil lead and black truffle. On the palate there is a rich core of dark fruit and a lovely integration of tannin and wood.
This wine is fully mature and drinking well now.

A great treat for Christmas.

If you'd like to give this a try then pop in-store this weekend, we look forward to seeing you!

Kanonkop Kadette 2010, Stellenbosch
was £10.99 now £8.79

“Kanonkop, where the big guns roar.”
Kanonkop Estate has been described by those in the know as being the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru or First Growth. These claims can be backed by the accumulation of international awards the winery has won over more than a decade.
The Kadette is Kanonkop's 'second wine', similar in ethos to the second wines of top Bordeaux estates. It is a lighter, more forward version of it's top blends. Made from around 50% Pinotage, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the blend; it is then aged
for around 12 months in French oak barriques.
The wine has a deep ruby red colour, showing flavours of raspberries, redcurrant and mocha.
This wine has great length and would be ideal paired with lamb steaks or spicy sausage pasta.

This Burgundy stands out from the crowd, mostly due to the producer, Louis Jadot, who have been refining their skills since 1859, and exporting since 1900.

With such a wealth of history behind it, this 100% chardonnay has a lot to live up to – but it certainly delivers, with an elegant but clean palate of green fruits, reminiscent of orchards, whilst the minerality of the wine provides a surprising complexity
often only attributed to older wines, due to the vinification in stainless steel. A hint of lemon completes the well rounded taste.

Macon-Villages wines are made to be drunk now, as opposed to aging, so snap up a couple today to enjoy with seafood, chicken or any other light meal you fancy!

Definitely not true!

Screwcaps have made a remarkable rise to fame over the last decade or so. Pushed by the Australians in the Clare Valley in the early 2000s their usage then spread over to New Zealand and now encompasses every wine producing region in the world. A quick
glance over our shelves would suggest that now about 95% of Australasian wine is using this closure.

It hasn't been plain sailing all the way, and even today many consumers remain dubious about screwcapped wine. But the simple fact is that you know that when you open a bottle of screwcapped wine its contents will be the same as when it left the winery.
That's not to say that it can't have faults, but it definitely isn't going to be corked! There is nothing worse than opening a bottle of wine and being greeted by that musty smell of cork taint, and that is the main advantage of screwcap over cork. It's
also cheaper than cork, and doesn't require a device to open it.

The only question mark that remains is over screwcapped wine's ability to age. Some people would argue that the tiny amount of oxygen that seeps through a cork over time contributes to the way it ages. As the exact way that a wine ages is not yet fully
understood then we'll just have to wait until the industry's a little older to answer that.

My hunch is that reluctant screwcappers are put off because they like the ceremony of opening a bottle of wine with a corkscrew, and I can totally understand that. But, there is no evidence that bottling under screwcap is in anyway detrimental to the quality
of wine, and indeed some of the most expensive wine on our shelves is now using this closure. Check out Penfolds RWTat £60 a bottle.

Maybe one day we'll see Chateau Latour 2050 with a screw cap, though I doubt it, but for your everyday bottles screwcap is the best and most reliable way of sealing a wine bottle.

If you have any of your own thoughts on the screwcap/cork debate then why not join in on twitter? Follow us @majesticdundee

So I was going to pick this one last week, until it dawned on me that I didn't actually know the answer. But fret not, I've done some research! And the answer is..... I still don't really know why the punt is in the bottle.

The punt is the indentation in the bottom of a bottle of wine. Opinion is divided on what its actual purpose is. Some say it is there to strenghten the bottle so it can withstand the pressure in a bottle of Champagne, or that it is there to collect the
sediment formed during the Champagne ageing process. Or it could be there to make holding the bottle easier when pouring. Or for ease of stacking. Or to make the bottle look bigger. Personally I think it's there so you can turn over your empty bottle and
use it as a makeshift wine glass. Then again maybe I just made that up.

But one thing I do know is that there is little corrolation between the depth of the punt and its content's quality. You are unlikely to find one in a very cheap bottle as there is an expense in putting it in and it adds to the weight so you could argue
that there is maybe a grain of truth here, but there is certainly no gradual grading system. The most expensive bottle of wine that we have in stock at the moment is Louis Roederer's Cristal Champagne, which has no punt at the bottom at all (And a bargain
at £150 if you're interested?!?).

The best way to assess quality is to taste the contents, so why not pop down to our brand new, shiny Dundee store and sample what we have on our tasting counter?

You can add your own views as to uses for the punt by getting in touch on twitter @majesticdundee

Fine Wine Friday so we will have Pouilly-Fume 2008 Ladoucette open on the tasting counter.

At Chateau du Nozet, Baron Ladoucette follows a family tradition producing some of the best Loire wines available. So come in and sample for yourselves one of the best picks in Loire wines!

We look forward to seeing you.

Opening a bottle early and allowing it to breathe will have very little affect on the wine. Think about the tiny amount of wine that's actually in contact with the air when you do this. If you want to let a bottle breathe, then you really need to pour
it into a decanter. And if you don't have one then just use a glass measuring jug, or anything else that's glass, clean and inert, and let it rest for half an hour or so.

There are two main reasons why this is worth doing. One is that many of the more expensive red wines are bottled unfiltered or are aged, and in either case a sediment will form in the bottom of the bottle that should be removed before drinking. The other
is to aerate the wine which is done to 'relax' it and remove any harshness or tightness present. It can really make a big difference, but don't expect any miracles! Nothing is going to turn that £5 supermarket plonk into the next Chateau Lafite.

So if it's red and full bodied, then stick it in a decanter - it definitely won't do it any harm. If you've got a very old bottle that you've been hanging onto for a special occasion then most of them would still want decanting to remove the sediment, but
be careful with them and serve immediately.

Myth-buster #1 "Wine gets better with age"

Ok, let's start with a biggie...

There are a few hard and fast rules for this, but the vast majority of wine you'll pick up off the shelf is designed for immediate consumption and while it may last for a few years it definitely won't improve! It used to be all the rage to buy wine to lay
down in your wine cellar and age them before drinking, but these days most people don't have the time, space or inclination to do this and so winemakers deliberately create their wines to be forward and fruity and ready-to-go straight off the shelf. Price
is often a decent indication - there's very little chance of a bottle you've spent £5-£10 improving in the bottle, and vica versa, if you've splashed out on a £20 red from a recent vintage then it probably will develop in the rack.

Certain wines are renouned for their ability to age, like Bordeaux or Chateauneuf-du-Pape from France, or Barolo or Amarone from Italy. And in the whites, Riesling, Semillon and Chenin Blanc together with the world's great sweet wines like Sauternes or
Vintage Port.

Aromatic white wines such as New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and dry Gewurztraminer are best drunk young along with the lighter reds like Beaujolais.

However if you are wanting to lay a few bottles down and don't want to break the bank then here's a few suggestions from our range that might fit the bill.

Catena Malbec 2008 Mendoza, Argentina

Mount Elizabeth Semillon 2005, Hunter Valley, Australia

Trimach Riesling 2009, Alsace, France

Ch. Caronne-St-Gemme 2006, Bordeaux, France

There's many others too, if you'd like to know more then just pop in to the store and we'll be happy to help!

Pouilly Fume 'Les Cascadelles' 2010
Caves de Pouilly-sur-Loire
£10.99 or buy 2 save £6 = £7.99

Pouilly Fume, also known as Pouilly Blanc Fume and Blanc Fume de Pouilly, is one of the Loire Valley's most famous wines. Made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, it is often called Blanc Fume because wines made from this variety when grown on the predominantly
limestone soils, with some flint, supposedly exhibit a 'smoky' flavour. The wines are certainly perfumed, 'Les Cascadelles' has a bouquet pronounced with gooseberry aromas and a hint of gunflint steeliness, which is typical of the appellation. In the glass,
this wine has an appealing golden colour with green inflections. Long and elegant in the mouth, this Pouilly Fume is packed with classic Sauvignon Blanc flavours of gooseberry, orange blossom and citrus fruit, backed by a crisp elegant mineral character on
the finish.

Open on the Tasting counter, so why not pop in and give it a try today!
