Mid week wine and food matching

    Duncan

A fantastically simple and delicious mid week meal in our house is chorizo spaghetti served in a tomato, red wine and harissa sauce.

Heat a tablespoon of olive oil, add a clove of chopped garlic and fry off a Spanish onion. Once golden brown add chopped chorizo sausage and fry off until the onions turn that vibrant orange colour that comes from the spices in the sausage. Then add a tin of chopped tomatoes, a cup of red wine and a tea spoon or two (depending how fiery you want it) of the harissa sauce. Leave for about half an hour to forty minutes on a low/medium heat to simmer, then serve with spaghetti.

To compliment the taste of all those spices traditionally associated with Spain I served the Eguia Crianza at £4.99. At the moment I am using the Eguia as my very own house wine. At its current price it is a brilliant wine to serve with a mid week meal or even open and even drink on its own when friends come over and you don't have to think about the price!!!.

    Egui Crianza - £4.99 multi-buy

Wine Of The Week - Chateau de Brens, Saint-Emilion, Grand Cru, 1996

    Will

This weeks WOTW demonstrates one of the worlds most renowned and classic styles, Bordeaux. Hand-harvested grapes, cultivated from 40 year old vines produce this exceptional red wine, which has been matured using French oak barrels and effortlessly displays a balance of flavour and finesse from a great vintage.

Created by a small-scale producer situated in the heart of the highly esteemed Saint-Emilion Grand Cru area, this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is mahogany in colour due to a substantial time spent in bottle and is host to complex and developed characteristics such as spiced plums and cigar box which are carried to great length by smooth, fine and velvety tannins.

An absolute must with slow cooked beef casseroles or stews.

    £12.99 - Multi-buy offer price

Visiting Wine Regions - Part 3

    Percy

For those of you who watched The Apprentice last week your awareness of English Sparkling wines may have been heightened.  I really enjoyed the programme as I spent half the evening saying "I've been there"!

Back when I joined Majestic in 2010 I began studying towards my WSET advance certificate.  I read the chapter on vitification and whilst there were diagrams of trelised vines I have always found seeing these things for real helps my understanding, so I took a trip to a local vineyard.

Denbies is situated in Surrey and proudly boasts terroir very similar to that of Champagne.  As I drove up to the main building I saw all the trelised vines and instantly things started to make more sense to me.  I chose to take the tour of the vineyards and the cellars.  The tour of the vineyards is in a little road train.  The hills are steep and I was glad to be able to view the surroundings from the relative comfort of the vehicle whilst receiving a running commentary from the knowledgeable driver.

The cellars were not the biggest I've seen, but they are well organised and the video about the terroir and the history were interesting.  I did sample the wines too and was pleasantly surprised by one or two.

Wine Of The Week - Villa Maria, Graham Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc, 2010

    Will

This weeks WOTW is about getting more from our current New Zealand promotion and taking the opportunity to treat yourself to something a little bit special. Villa Maria are one of the best known producers of Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand and as many of you will have tried the ever so popular 'Private Bin' Sauvignon we thought you you may be interested in this beautiful 'Single Vineyard' from one of their most prestigious plots.

Influenced by the maritime climate and planted on vine-straining gravel soils this exceptional quality wine balances fresh and zingy acidity with rich and pungent flavours of gooseberry, asparagus and lime.

Drinking beautifully by itself and a perfect match to spicy asian cuisine, don't miss out on the opportunity to pop a bottle in your trolley whilst it's at this fantastic price.

Villa Maria, Graham Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc, 2010 - £12.79 per bottle on New Zealand offer.

Mid week wine and food matching

    Jane

After yet another busy day at work, not to mention running round after my kids, it was deemed that dinner was going to be a quick affair. Not the eating of it but the cooking. It was time for an old family favourite, Spaghetti Puttanesca. An italian classic taught to me by my husband who is half Italian. It's a spaghetti dish with a standard tomato sauce also including anchovies, capers and olives. Topped off with a grating of Parmesan cheese to serve.

So the next big question is what to drink with it - surely it has to be Italian. I am a great believer of eating food with wine from where the recipe originates. This time we went for a glass (I'm pretending that's all I had) of Bardolino 'Naiano' 2011, Allegrini at £6.79 (under the 20% off Italian wines).

The wine matching was a real hit, the Bardolino cut through the tomato sauce and complemented the saltiness of the anchovies. The food was also a hit with all the family, although I will never make it as well as my late Mother-in-Law!

    Manager

I am back for my second stint on the isle of Wight. I was part of the team when we opened the store back in March 2011 and spent 6 months here as the assistant manager. Having worked in Tunbridge Wells for 6 months I have returned to manage the store. My favourite wines are big, bold reds, but with the summer coming I'm rather partial to Provencal Rose and aromatic whites, such as Viognier.

    Assistant Manager

I'm the first mate of this mighty vessel and have settled nicely into Island life since washing up on these mystical shores last September. I feel that there is a great deal of exploration to be done across the Southern French wine selection and my ideal night out would be a campfire sing-a-long with Celine Dion and Bryan Adams whilst sharing a magnum of Rioja!

Hi, I have been with Majestic since we opened in March 2011and have lived on the Island coming up to 15 years. Prior to this I have worked within wine and food for many years. I also am a taxi driver to my children. The best things about the Island are the beaches and the Festivals. Favourite wine of late Montes Alpha Chardonnay #80sgirl.

  • Duncan

    Trainee Manager

The Isle of Wight Majestic store is my first placement with the company. It was when I was bitten by the traveling bug that I fell in love with wine. I was in a Buenos Aires steak house visiting my brother and was served the most delicious, meaty steak along with heavy and bold Malbec that really ignited my passion. I try to live by the mantra that Champagne will make everything all right.
